Iam getting 10.5kmpl from my Bull.I would like to know the following:
1.whats the rpm - minimum and maximum to be maintained in each gear?
2.which Speed, the gears to be shifted and what speed to be maintained in each gear

You are getting what TATA's have designed the 2.2l for, so in a way you are driving as per their expectations buddy, what else can you ask for .

Quote:
This remarkable engine is operated by a 32-bit electronic control unit, which also ''lowers emission and fuel consumption by a few notches'', or so Tata claims. This claim is borne out by its extraordinary fuel efficiency of 14.4 km/litre on the highway, quite an improvement over the earlier 12.8 km/litre. This matches the Innova's much-admired fuel-efficiency while at the same time overhauling the Scorpio's 13.9 km/litre, and confirms to Bharat Stage III emission standards.

Mileage (city)- 10.7 km/litre

I think any thing above 11 is good. See what i got for my last 6 tank fulls and all of this is in delhi peak office traffic.
11.3,11.6,10.9,11.2,11.8, 12.2
and all of this is noraml diesel.
One thing i noted is teh average increase with IOC diesel.

Out of curiosity I'm asking if any of the better FE vehicles on this forum were pre-December/Jan purchases.

Wondering if this Damping pulley thingy makes any diff to the engine efficiency.

Seems none with the Trivandrum dealer had this issue.

My responses in bold

I use the clutch only when its necessary i.e. to change the gears
what rpm do you shift gears at
While changing the gears I try not to go over 2K RPM. Something occasionally it touches 2.5K but very less.

when coming to a stop light and you see it's a red , do you coast or still keep on the gas ...
I keep the car switched on if that is what you ask, but I dont clearly understand the meaning of coast

It does seem foolish to ask a question and then come up with an answer too.

But safari 2.2 uses GTA1749V model of the Garrett turbocharger with VNT technology aka VTT. I saw it on the engine too, it reads GT1749V.

Back to using premium diesel after one fill up of normal IOC diesel though without System D or STP.

Used Indian Oil Premium diesel for this weekend run. Will calculate the FE once the tank light glows up, but on the look of it this sure will be giving the max FE till date.

Other than that completed 6 months [Oct 15 '07 - Apr 14 '08] and 9000 kms ownership of VTT-TMT. A very satisfying onwership experience but will post a long-term review on a separate thread once it crosses 20,000 km/1 year, whichever first.

As of Till Now:

These 6 months, the VTT-TMT has gone through almost everything. It took hellway of NH34 the very next day of purchase, through the night forest journeys of North Bengal, to all the unknown hill roads that we with our small child ventured alone and also appreciated much how it landed safely and continued on after being airborne for a good second or two due to taking a steep hill downslope with a series of humps with speed, to taking a severe upslope/incline whereby the opposite two wheels almost got lifted, to the remote forest roads of Orissa where it went through some of the worst roads without a miss and last but not least through a flash flood boulder strewn stream.

The "niggle/issue" that I have faced till now is of the fuel cap opening on rough/bumpy roads, which was changed at 5k km. Thats it and nothing else.

I had to go back to the service station as I was getting a rattling sound when going over uneven surface.

Which I had eventually detected to a loose Engine sump cover bolt. I also diagnosed that the wrong bolt type was used.

Usually the tapered pointed bolts are used at all the ends and flat ones on the inside, although they are of the same thread size '8.8' and same with head no '13' (discussed this with kingshuk too, to be sure).

After my damper pulley change, they probably lost 1 tapered bolt and then took out a flat one from the bottom middle of the sump cover to be used as replacement. So I had 2 issues now, 1 bolt is missing and is being used at the wrong place and not tightened.

Once the mechanic was told to remove the wrong one by the supervisor, the mechanic as usual started tightening the same wrong bolt type and I had to insist that he removes the flat bolt and put it back at the bottom and get a new tapered one for the missing from the front arm of guard.

Although he insisted that its of the same size, I told him that "I know, but if the company is putting a tapered bolt its for some purpose, otherwise they could have also used the flat ones too".

That sends him to bring the tapered bolt from somewhere, god knows, which I visually inspect to be sure and if he has got both the required washers too.

And after some 45min the job is done, its an inconvenient location in front of the radiator and takes some time to be tightened. Supervisor asks him to check other bolts too and does a quick visual check, tops up the coolant and off I go.

Do any of you know if the 2.2VTT has a BCM installed..... If Yes, have you guy's faced any Malfunction ..

BCM Controls the Following

Automatic door locks
• Battery protection
• Chimes
• Courtesy lamps
• BCM diagnostic support
• Door lock inhibit
• Headlamp time delay
• Ignition key lamp
• Illuminated entry
• Instrument panel dimming
• Mechanical instrument cluster support
• Power door locks (with/without remote keyless entry)
• Vehicle Theft Security system (VTSS)

'8.8' does not specify the thread. This '8.8' embossed on the head of the bolt specifies the class of the bolt. This '8.8' specifies the tensile strength, elongation etc.

Fixing the bolts of the engine sump cover on the radiator shield is a pain.

Why did you need to top up the coolant? I topped up the coolant only during the 1st service (The coolant level want below the 'H' mark) and after that I have not noticed any change in the level of the coolant.

BTW the mechanic must have topped up the auxillary coolant tank (ONLY). I hope that he filled in RAW coolant and not coolant diluted with water.

P.S: The front Engine sump cover is not available is spares. It is similar to the 3L model and should have been introduced atleast 2/3 years ago.

Any reason for the query ? Anything that we should look out for ?

VTSS is a separate module which is sourced from Minda (atleast in my vehicle)

What is 'Door Lock Inhibit'?

Even the Sierra had a module (then manufactured by "Grihini Udyog' inside TM to TM's design) which controlled some of the functions that you have listed eg:Instrument Panel dimming.

Sorry, If have asked too many questions..
