Rocket Hatch - Dark Grey GETZ CRDI. EDIT: 1 yr, 15k kms + report.

4 yrs ago, I bought my first car - MARUTI ZEN. A cute little car to be used for city drives and to carry 4 people at times in Ok comfort, with the emphasis being on low cost of ownership. ZEN served my family wonderfully in those 4 years with absolutely no problems and giving a wonderful mileage as well (15-17 kmpl in city and 18-22 kmpl on highways
all with AC). The resale value offered for the car is also very good. It shows why people keep going for Maruti's again and again.

I wanted a car which would satisfy my urge for power and ease for long drives, while being light on pocket. I had a max budget of 6 lakhs and options in petrol for a powerful and fuel efficient vehicle was almost NIL.

With new age diesels providing a great mix of power, mileage, reliability and refinement, my choice of fuel was obvious.

My decision was made among the below 4 cars
1) Swift VDi
2) Getz Crdi
3) Palio SDX and
4) Punto Dynamic.

After extensive research; through test drives (took at least 3 drives each), going through ownership threads, general feedback; and discussions with family, I decided on purchasing GETZ Crdi.

I had test driven the 1.3 petrol version in 2005 and liked it for the space offered, comfort, ride quality, looks, build quality, visibility and general presence of the car.
With the Verna Diesel engine fitted onto the Getz, the car went to an altogether different level. The engine is very smooth and the in-cabin NVH levels are the best in the category. The brakes felt inadequate, though I never drive the way I do during test drives. During a test drive I put up the worst case, so I know what my limit with the car is. Similar with the handling, it doesn't inspire the confidence that I have with my ZEN/Fiesta. Maybe it has to do with the stock tyres which can't handle the immense torque.

The power is just unbelievable. I've never driven a diesel car which didnt run out of breath and was willing to pull more. I touched 140kmph on Cochin bypass, and the engine had more than enough left in it. My Fiesta runs out of steam around 120kmph, and even in its power band, doesn't pull like the GETZ. I also didnt feel the turbo lag like present on the Swift/Palio/Punto. The progression was even and good enough until it overpowers you once 1800 rpm is reached. The noise inside cabin in the GETZ at medium to high speeds were also lower than in my Fiesta.

Interiors are just neat and nothing special in them. Clean and uncluttered, though I don't like the fake wooden panels. Storage space is quite good and so is the boot space. There's only one version offered and its priced about 1.5 lakhs over a similarly featured Getz 1.3 Petrol. No tubeless tyres for the car is a bit of a shock. A tyre upgrade is imminent at least for the sake of tubeless tyres.

The clinching factor, though, was the reduced price at which it was being offered i.e 4.99 lakhs ex-showroom and I thought of booking the Getz. Then I heard news of the production being stopped. That created a doubt in my mind.

On 15th July 2008, we booked the Swift VDi (ABS) in Azure Grey. Popular Motors gave a waiting period of 4 months for the car (a blessing in disguise). I didn't want to wait so much for a car when I could get equally good cars without so much delays. So I started my calls with the dealerships for immediate delivery. Called up FIAT, HYUNDAI and MARUTI dealers for an immediate delivery and FIAT and Hyundai agreed.

After much discussions with my family, we finally decided to buy the GETZ CRDI at the price of 4.99 lakhs ex-showroom, i.e 5.46 lakhs on-road in Cochin. We knew that its production was stopped, but I would be keeping the car for 6-7 yrs and I don't mind the resale value. I bought the ZEN when it was about to be stopped and had no issues with its spares or whatsoever with the car. So I'm hoping for the best with Getz as well. The swift booking will be cancelled now.

My parents went on Chingam beginning, considered an auspicious time, i.e 17th August and booked a Dark Grey Getz (one among the only 2 cars remaining in cochin) with an advance payment of 25k (its high, but did it as we knew when we are getting the car on the date we want). We gave a post-dated cheque for 21th Aug and vehicle was sent for registeration 24th August. We are getting the car delivered today - 25th August 2009.

Initial Mods planned.
1) ICE and Autocop which was in Zen will be put into Getz
2) Tyre upgrade -- Need suggestions. Tyre recommendation apart from Michelin and Yoko are also invited.

Alloys wont be fitted as of now due to lack of funds. Will see later on about that. Pete's will be in pipeline only if I get bored with stock power delivery, which is not likely soon.

Congratulations krish on buying the GETZ CRDi. IT is a decision which I am sure you will not regret anytime. Enjoy your machine thoroughly.

Gentlemen, when recommending tires please remember that these are going to be fitted onto steel wheels and not alloys as of now.

Thanks Guys!!!

I will indeed be fitting the tyres on Stock wheels like kpzen.

Prajesh-: Are you talking about 195/65 R14 or 195/60. I dont want the ride quality to be hampered at any cost.

Guys-: I would like to know what tyre config all of you are running as well.

185/65-14 Yoko A drives or Michelin XM1.

Have that size on my car and its done 36k kms so far and looks good for another 5~8 k kms.

Congrats on the new buy krish. Are you getting it from popular or MGF? I took delivery of my i20 yesterday from popular, and the only grey getz that was there was missing from the yard.

I took it from MGF Hyundai. We had contacted Popular and they said they didnt have stock.

Was it marked as "Registered"? It could be that both dealers send to the RTO together. So it could have been there. It could have been used for test drive even. I wont complain as Getz I had taken all test drives on were customer cars. couldnt get hold of anything else. I took test drive on a grey one itself. Was for another customer.

So on a positive side my car will be fully run-in by now.

Congrats Krish!

For tyres, if you plan on getting alloys anytime soon, then I suggest you get 14" alloys and 195/60 R14 Conti CPC 2. Leagues better than the ER 60 or the Michelin XM1+ and very decent grip which you need anyway. Of course, in this size ,you have other options as well, but I would wholeheartedly recommend the CPC2.

If you are sticking to steel wheels, then 185/65 R14 XM1+ is the best I can think of. However, personally, I would never be happy having these tyres on a Road rocket. But these fit your requirement of comfort tyres splendidly.
