I happen to like the names. I think they took the name from the Akula class Soviet subs from the 80s (remember the movie Crimson Tide?)

Lovely looking bike. Wonder what kind if power they will get out of the 'race tuned' motor. Enough to bother the RC390?

Might be taken from this. In fact, when ever I hear the name Akula, it is the submarines which come to my mind first. I personally liked the name - any day better than the likes of passion plus, passion super plus, passion super eco plus plus etc.

PS: Indian Navy have am Akula Class sub - INS Chakra.

The same ridicule about the name was thick in the air when the "Creta" was launched by Hyundai, we even had a thread with what I can call colorful prefixes and suffixes for the name, but later we all saw who laughed their way to the bank!

I don't think a bad name can sink a vehicle in India, notwithstanding Tata's renaming exercise of the Tiago!

Absolutely lovely. I bought a KTM RC390 as my first bike recently and after learning that the new CBR250rr was only going to be a parallel twin and not an inline 4 like the original models, the Akula is currently the only bike that makes me feel like I might be envious if I see it on the roads I doubt it will have the outright poke of the 390, but I'm sure this one is going to be a game changer with that aluminium trellis frame. It sure is nice to see more outright supersports in the lower classes. A good change from the regular sporty Ninja 300s and R3s.

Now this is exciting. The Akula even in production forms should be a head-turner in terms of looks, but the pricing will be the most crucial factor in its sales success. The RC390 is a tough cookie to beat due to its pricing - 2.4 lac gets you 43hp , so the Akula has a 2-2.2 lac price target to match. If they can make it available that is, which the absence of RTR200 on the roads hints at.

Now one more launch teasing my patience, joining the Bajaj CSx00.

Probably you are inferring too much of its meaning and most probably picking the wrong language of its origin, Akula is also a Russian word for shark. Russians have this name for some famous submarines.

So we probably have to wait for TVS to elaborate it.

You are right and they even confirmed that at the launch of the Concept during the Auto Expo. There's also a video by PowerDrift or AutoCar (don't remember exactly), which shows the design features inspired from Shark. Not sure how many of them would be part of the final product though.

The riding position seems a little upright. I hope TVS does not go that route. I was getting excited at the idea of more dedicated supersport-like bikes with committed riding positions filling in the 250-500cc segment. Ah well seems like the RC390 will still be the only track focused bike out there. I suppose in a way TVS made the right decision as the bike will still enjoy a possible success in our market where everyone harps on and on over riding comfort since our country has grown on Splendors which ask nothing out of the rider to do nothing (relatively unimpressive feats). The Ninja300 and R3 are way too pricey and this could be the new king of the segment. Perhaps the RC390's already low price in India was another deterring factor for TVS to launch the Akula as a direct competitor to it. Who knows... all I can say is that I am a bit saddened to see those raised clip-ons.

Some more news finally on the akula, pics look great, seems to be coming along well. Just hope that it is launched soon, I was almost making my mood to book the Rc390 and this comes along. Well guess the wait continues, I really want to drive this once before committing.
