Re: Cars of HH Nawab Sadiq M Abbasi V of Bahawalpur, Pakistan

1930 Packard 740 RHD Limousine, BWP 120
Chassis # 186534, Engine # 182381, Body # 415804, Vehicle # 186205R
Anti theft ID stamped on firewall: II7874
This photo of my car came up recently.
Recently freshly made Detroit Lubricator Type 51 carburetors have become available approx. $5250 from Scott Henningsen's, USA. Superb reproduction. Last month my son gifted me one from them. My original having deteriorated, actually crumbled into oblivion. I was running the car for past 35 years on a jury rigged Chevrolet down draft carburetor on a U- shaped intake Tube for last 35 years as any used or even NIB carbs were beyond safe and reliable use because of Pot metal.
Will put it on and report but so far it is sitting like a museum piece on my desk.

Re: Cars of HH Nawab Sadiq M Abbasi V of Bahawalpur, Pakistan

Great find. This is my RR Phantom 1 Chassis 45WR at the private railways siding and station at Dera Nawab Sahib where the two long and one short carriages were stationed. Its a curious double height design of a private siding allowing purdah for the household. Building still exists but the railway carriages got burnt down, some say arson by thieves who stole away the interior.

Re: Cars of HH Nawab Sadiq M Abbasi V of Bahawalpur, Pakistan

I picture of a Ford Model T with a bus body has been recently sent my way (photo credit: Bahawal Abbasi). Judging from the steel radiator shell, the vehicle dates onwards from 1917. My guess is that picture may be from the early 1920's. But I am not sure.

Yes it is as painted by Barker in 1934 when the Limousine Pullman de ville body was erected and it is my pride and joy for Preservation class.
That said, the first body, a Thrupp & Maberly disappearing top tourer with a semi boat tail type back, in Nile Blue and Ivory and Grebel spot lamps etc. would be a show stopper at Pebble Beach type shows.
The instrumentation ( bezels etc.) were in Nile Blue too, as were Chassis components.

This photo of 3AX87 is from 30th July, 1952. So the car must have remained in England for a few years after WWII.

Thanks for these pics guys. All I need to know now is what the UK registration number of the car was! Cheers. Steve

I came across this very interesting write up by a gentleman, on Facebook. Perhaps some of the esteemed contributors to the thread, would find it interesting and share their knowledge and insight.

Re: Cars of HH Nawab Sadiq M Abbasi V of Bahawalpur, Pakistan

Thank you for the post. Lt Gen Marden was a well known and well respected part of the Bahawalpur Govt., and pre partition he had been made the GOC of the Bahawalpur forces by the Nawab. These were regular troops and also included His Highnesses Body guard unit. He was replaced by Major General Sir Sam Greaves as the commander of the new division around the end of 1948. The Amir was reluctant to replace him (or any other officer) but Marden had very limited military knowledge or experience in command and C-in C Pakistan Army Gen Douglas Gracey insisted on his replacement.
Lt Gen Marden lived on in Bahawalpur as a close confidant and trusted advisor with HH. As per anecdotal information from knowledgeable sources of Bahawalpur family, HH was instrumental in getting Gen Marden married to a very fine English lady who was one of the governesses of his sons. The General had a couple of pet dogs among them a very obese black Labrador named "Tumko Mono Push" or " Tumku Munu Push". He was unable to move under his own steam and was laid face outwards at the generals railway coach and nobody dared come near it. (I am told the name may be a distortion of Bengali words or Urdu meaning I will push you).
After the death of HH, in 1966, he was at liberty to sell off the gifted car and I understand from the post that Mr. John Warth and his son bought the car from him and took to UK, after much adventure at the docks during the 1971 War.
Gen Marden is buried in Dera Nawab. Per instructions his beloved old dogs, fed on candies among other things, were put to sleep and buried near his grave. His widow left for UK soon after.

In 1978 I saw this car in London, restored to a high standard, in green with cream/ Old English White fenders, with the Bahawalpur state crest with Pelicans, on the rear doors (not the intertwined AA of HH's personal cars), displayed for sale at Coy's of Kensington, then at Kensington mews London. For sale at GBP 28000 or so.

The above account is from notes to my book and Friday times article, and not definitive on the personal life of the General. Additions and corrections are welcome.
