At least a couple of other SS's came to India...Maharajas of Bhopal (hunting car) and Kashmir. The Bhopal car is also shown (multiple pictures) in the book "Car of Kings" by Lozier starting on page 248

The Kashmir Mercedes SS 1930 can be found at:
Mercedes-Benz SS 27/160/200 PS "Maharadscha Behadur" 1930

The Bhopal Mercedes SS can be found at:

Mercedes S-SS-SSK-SSKL 03

DKG, do you have any additional pictures of the Hyderabad / Berar SS you have posted ? Thanks

As of now no, but am trying to trace pictures of the family cars, especially the Duesenbergs that came to Hyderabad. I have a lovely picture of a PIII specially ordered for Azamjah. Once my scanner is setup will post that too

By the way welcome to the forum, glad to see someone joining this attempt at cataloguing the cars that came to India

Handsome car, does it remain in Calcutta? A collector in Bangalore has one too. Here are some pictures

PS: Was it Mercedes who were fiddling with placement of the badge or was it the handiwork of local restorers?

Stunning! Absolutely stunning. I agree this probably is the most flamboyant car to come to India. Azamjah's SS posted earlier is very pretty too but this one takes the cake! Wow

According to the website, this car was exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1930 from where Kashmir bought it. The vehicle was in their possession until 1972

Very handsome although the paint scheme ruins it for me (would prefer it in white). Still love the Bhopal SS, its hauntingly beautiful

That would be romaticizing Id say

I forget the literal words, but they loosely translated to the pedigree of the motor or thereabouts. There was the type K, SK, and SSK. K stood for "kurz" or short.

As far as I know....

The SS (Super Sport) was "derived" from the "S" series; further iterations, many for racing, included the SSK ("K" for Kurtz or "Short" wheelbase) and the SSKL ("L" for Leicht / Light - which had holes drilled in the chassis and other modifications to lighten the car).

It is interesting that Jaguar which started out as "SS" for Swallow Sidecar Co., then SS Cars Ltd. - was later renamed. The "SS" connotation wasn't fashionable or favoured in Britain due to its obvious Nazi connections!
