It is just 6 chassis later than the LeMans v12 racers, and has left over spares from them in it, like the drilled brake drums. it also has a higher ratio axle than standard for this chassis, presumably for high speed continental trips.
it was ordered by the maharajah in the midst of WW2, when civilian car production had long ended, since Lagonda didn't want to refuse an important order, the company presidents car was refurbished and sold. the car was shipped from the factory in September 1940.
I was told earlier this month by a gentleman who is an author of several books on vintage Rolls Royce and others, that this may be the last civilian car, certainly the last sports car exported out of England till the war ended.

Here is presumably your car, Awini, with its "original" owner. The light and dark colours look reversed from today's.

Here is a large limousine, probably a Lincoln? Proudly bearing plates Miraj (Senior) 4. Wonder if the car survived.

Nice find, Karl. I do not think this is a Lincoln, though can't identify what it is! Desoto or Hupmobile maybe ?

Karl, your wonderful Miraj find is almost certainly a 1930 Marmon "Big Eight".

Re: How rich were the Maharajas before Independence! Cars of the Maharajas

Here is a rare shot of Gayatri Devi behind the wheel of a Mercedes cabriolet (can Mercedes experts identify the car?). But in the back we can distinctly see a 300SL Gullwing. Though probably shot abroad, its exciting to think this shot just may have been taken in India, and that elusive Gullwing is still out there somewhere...

On digging a bit deeper it has been identified as a 190SL.

Now Cooch Behar did have a 190SL, which is now in Pune. I wonder...!

Karl,
The picture shows HH Gayatri Devi at the wheel of a left hand drive, the Poona 190sl being a right hand drive has to be a different car

I am inclined to believe that this picture was taken not in India.

It is possible that she was trying out a 190sl in Germany before deciding to order a right hand drive version for India??
