That's horrible. IMO driver is to blame here, not the soft suspension setup or dynamics of Verna.

Yes, the particular Verna in pictures is SX variant, which is equipped with ABS.

The Baleno's mangled remains are so scary to look at, this must have been a high speed impact because the car has totally crumpled and if it was not for the alloys, i would not have even recognized it. Sad to note that so many people lost lives, scary crash.

Not blaming any one but i hope the companies/dealers start educating people that they need to keep it easy for the first 1000-1500 kms, it takes time getting used to a new car, brakes need bed in and those new tyres also take time to grip properly. No one here reads owners manual and nor are most people educated enough, a 3 minute safety brief should help people understand why companies ask people to drive easy for initial 1000 kms.

Despite having airbags from the base version, it failed to deploy. I'm not saying anything more since we don't know the point of impact( impact could have been on the side)
After seeing the last few pages in this thread,I sincerely wish for a rollover test in the upcoming Bharat Safety programme along with a side impact test. That along with seat belts can save many lives.( Apart from driving etiquette and following rules)

Yes, there were six people in the car according to the article. It's mentioned twice IIRC.

A question to Verna owners: From the screeching noise I heard, the car tires seemed to have locked under hard braking. Doesn't Verna come with ABS?

ABS will not kick in guys if the cause of the skid is a high speed directional change manoeuvre. Program's like ESC (electronic stability control) are a safer bet in cases like these. The Verna has suffered a fishtail due to sharp curve which was beyond the scope of ABS.

I think there are many aspects to it. But basically if both surfaces are similar they provide maximum friction. Thats why F1 tires are bald, Road tires have somewhat more treads and off-road tires has deepest treads.

Further more the tire gets bald it reaches towards the area which is most hardest, or say the rubber is more hard on inner layers of tire.
