A pillar deformation like the case of this Swift is very serious concern considering the crash tests are conducted at certain low speed and many other cars scoring similar or better ratings come out in better state without receiving any such deformation.

What I read from such result is that if the crucial structure components like A pillar receives damage like the above Swift at a speed assuming something like 52 km/hr then what will happen if the car is crashed at little greater speeds like 60km/hr or 80km/hr or more?

Now take another case where structure of another car comes out clean in the same crash test without any such deformations in the structure then it means structure of that car can tolerate impacts greater than the previously tested 52km/hr speed. Maybe the structure of this car doesn't deform at 60km/hr or maybe can tolerate even higher speeds like 80km/hr or so which can only be known if tested at such greater speeds. But one can imagine what will happen to that Swift if crashed at greater than the standard crash test speeds.

What about the Ritz, I think it has the same safety rating like the previous generation of Swift and the same structural rigidity ?

Re: Maruti Swift, Datsun Go fail Global NCAP tests too...

Renault India's response,

Quote:
Global NCAP had tested the Kwid model that was in the developing stage. Global NCAP will test the latest Kwid soon.
Quote:
In that list, we were the only manufacturer that was acknowledged for putting more safety norms in the entry level car and that is the positive sign. So, Kwid will exceed all safety norms earlier
Quote:
Kwid continues to be a popular model among the entry level buyers due to excellent value proposition if offers. It is a global car. While we are meeting all the safety requirements of current regulations in India, we will be far exceeding even the requirements the Indian government will be putting in 2017 and 2019

On a lighter note, this guy has gone ahead and done a stand-up act on the entire topic. IMO not his best act but still worth a watch.

Keen to hear others' opinions too...
Sure you are right...

The assessors not only look at the forces that are transmitted to the crash test dummy. They also look at certain other parameters as well.

The vehicle body is observed for additional load paths or for structural integrity after crash. In this example, the A Pillar deformation would apply a Structural Modifier (-ve points). Other modifiers for air bags, steering wheel, etc. are also applicable based on the observations made by the assessor.

You can go through this document to better understand the concept behind the assessments made: http://s3.amazonaws.com/cdn.ancap.co...pdf?1417518157

(Please note that this document is protected by copyright and hence do not post the file / contents as such.)

Kindly note that NCAP is an body which assesses the vehicle crash performance over and above the minimum requirements stated by the governing laws of the country. Government laws mention the minimum criteria to meet for crash. Since, all saleable vehicles have to meet this, NCAP acts as an body to compare the cars and differentiate which are better. So NCAP bodies usually change the assessment criteria every 2/3 years period. This is why the ratings for one year do not apply for subsequent year models.

Though not for India , South Africa reveals its least safe vehicles - some cars are of interest to India!

There is always at least one person in the car (when it is moving!) and that's the driver. They don't think the driver needs protecting? If you are right, this is unbelievably stupid.

Brilliant!
I just love it when performance artists incorporate such messages. He could have picked any topic under the sun but managed to deliver a humerus session with so much information. All those people in the crowd stepped out a bit smarter than they were when they entered.

Thanks for sharing!

Saferi is obviously wrong. i10 in South Africa comes with only a driver airbag.

Re: Maruti Swift, Datsun Go fail Global NCAP tests too...

Couple of days back I was reading about the swift G-NCAP failure and today I happened to see two mangled DZires in the accidents in India thread.
I found a very interesting pattern to the deformation on the A-Pilar and roof between these DZires and the Swift in the NCAP test. Thought I would share it here.

Re: Maruti Swift, Datsun Go fail Global NCAP tests too...

The 2017 Suzuki Swift scores a poor 3 stars in Euro NCAP with standard safety equipment and 4 stars with safety pack. The standard safety equipment on the 2017 Swift in Europe includes front and side airbags, while the safety pack additionally includes Radar brake support.

http://www.euroncap.com/en/results/suzuki/swift/26927

http://www.euroncap.com/en/results/suzuki/swift/26928

In 2010 the Swift scored 5 stars in Euro NCAP, while the Indian spec car failed the G-NCAP in 2014. Although, the Euro NCAP tests have become stricter over the years, for a modern car built on an all-new platform to achieve anything less than 5 stars is disappointing - especially for a mass market car that is expected to sell in the millions over the next few years.

Re: Maruti Swift, Datsun Go fail Global NCAP tests too...

The India Vision Zero, road safety conference held in Mumbai on 5-6th June 2017. Organised by World Research Institue (WRI) Cross Center and Maharashtra Motor Vehicle Department, the event had Global NCAP representatives that congratulated India on this development.

Quote:
Speaking at the India Vision Zero 2017 conference, Jessica Truong, Programmes Director and Asia Pacific Coordinator - Global NCAP said, "It is very encouraging to see the Indian government apply UN crash test standards to new models in October this year and all cars in production by October 2018. This is a huge step forward in passenger car safety in India. It is impressive also to see the government mandating Anti-Lock Brakes (ABS) in motorcycles."
As per the proposed new car assessment programme, all cars will have to be equipped with safety features like airbags, ABS and seatbelt reminders. The new cars sold in India will have to go through mandatory crash testing and will have to comply with voluntary star ratings based on the crash test results. The cars will have to go through front, side and rear impact tests, as per the BNVSAP.

Re: Maruti Swift, Datsun Go fail Global NCAP tests too...

What is the actual definition of "new cars" which need to comply with mandatory crash testing/ airbags/abs from Oct 2017? Does it have to be an entirely new model or do even updated models like upcoming facelifted Ecosport need to follow from Oct 2017. Could not find this information anywhere
