Came across this article on the economic times. Don't know if this has been share here before, but this is definitely an exciting news. 8.8 KM long tunnel at Rohtang pass in Himachal Pradesh which will give all weather access to Lahaul-Spiti region.

Starting my plan for next Himalaya road trip during next year June/July. Sharing my itinerary. Any suggestions will be appreciated

Day 1. Hyderabad to Narsinghpur (750 KM)
Day 2. Narsinghpur to Greater Noida (770 KM)
Day 3. Greater Noida to Udhampur (660 KM)
Day 4. Udhampur to Srinagar (200 KM)
Day 5. Stay in Srinagar
Day 6. Srinagar to Kargil (200 KM)
Day 7. Kargil to Leh (200 KM)
Day 8. Stay at Leh (getting required permits)
Day 9. Leh to Nubra valley (160 KM)
Day 10. Nubra to Pangong via Shyok(274 KM)
Day 11. Pangong to Tso Moriri via Merak, Chusul(225 KM)
Day 12. Tso Moriri to Sarchu (230 KM)
Day 13. Sarchu to Manali (225 KM)
Day 14. Rest at Manali
Day 15. Manali to Mathura (700 KM)
Day 16. Mathura to Seoni (765 KM)
Day 17. Seoni to Hyderabad (680 KM)

This is my initial plan. Detailed plan is yet to be done. Your suggestions will be very helpful

My suggestion would be since you are going till Nubra Valley, why not go few kms ahead and stay a day at Turtuk? It's a beautiful village at LOC and you can see K2 mountain range (now in POK) from your Homestay. The village is part of Baltistan kingdom and the culture and language are totally different from Ladakh. Turtuk was part of Pakistan until 1972.
2nd suggestion would be to take only an SUV or better a 4x4 on the Pangong Tso Moriri route. There is a patch of 100 kms which is not even remotely a road. It's full pebbles road. Be ready for a bumpy ride. You need to follow taxis or car tracks to reach properly otherwise you will lose your way in the vast wide terrain.

This day is going to be a long day with very very bad roads.
My suggestion will be to take Pangong- Durbuk - Hemis - upshi - Chumathang - Tso Moriri route if you are on a sedan and are very particular about visiting Tso Moriri

The other suggestion is if you are taking the Chusul road, then you can plan for Hanle and Umling La.

Rest of the days looks fine to me.

As per this plan, you are going to stay three consecutive nights (days 10-12) at altitudes higher than 4000 meters, with a lot of driving done before and during those three days. That is a concern.

Actually I have done the same route and it didn't affect me except at Khardungla where I felt uneasy due to continuously driving and gave the wheel to my friend as soon as I descended Khardungla.

That's a valid concern; even I also have the same. Regarding my driving experience in similar terrain, I have done Shimla - Kalpa - Tabo - Kaza - Chandra Tal - Manali during mid-July.

What would be the difficulty level of Nubra Valley - Pangong - Tso Moriri - Sarchu road if we compare with Kaza - Chandra tal - Manali road?

The Homestay is at the centre of the residential area and you will get to see the village life closely. But the view from the Homestay, esp. It's open garden dining area is amazing. Full view of K2 mountain range. And the hosts are friendly too.

If you have done the Spiti loop, terrain wise, you should be fine. But It is better to have reserve days/back up plans in case AMS affects you. For example, if the night at Pangong gets you, you can go back to Leh and spend the next night there and then head to Tso Moriri. Similarly, if necessary, you can avoid night stay at Sarchu by leaving Tso Moriri early and driving all the way till Keylong or Jispa.

Need help in finalising my Ladakh trip in may 2018 end. What is the latest info on direct routes from nubra to pangong and pangong to tso moriri? Is it doable with family and innova cab in May end?
