If you have a 24xx series device, then it's quite easy. You can install the same map on the PC the one you have on the device. Then you can plan the route on the PC and transfer the route on to the device.

Re: Bangalore - Pondicherry : Route Queries

Nuvi 42LM has provision to add only ONE via point unlike in some other higher versions.
As such no idea how to proceed reg route planning/alternate methods.

I would still suggest Mysore-Chamarajanagar-Sathy-Bhavani-Salem-Ulundurpet-Tindivanam-Pondicherry.

Much less traffic to worry about. And Bhavani onwards its 4-lane all the way.

Re: Bangalore - Pondicherry : Route Queries

I meant that I am planning to plot the above route on Basecamp for trial purposes only.
However, whenever we actually decide,I plan to follow due to the advantages .:chamrajnagar/Sathy/Bhavani/Salem/ulundurpet/Tindivanam/Pondy,as suggested by you.
Thank you

Re: Bangalore - Pondicherry : Route Queries

Great. How did you find the ghat road driving over the 36 hair pin bends? Is it easily doable by a hatch back like my Spark?
Any tips to have a pleasant stress free drive as I dont have hill driving experience:(
Thanks

Use the engine brake as far as possible, while descending by driving in lower gears without bothering about the sound. The thumb rule is to use the same gear for both ascending and descending. Always give the right of way for the vehicles climbing the hill. While waiting near a hair-pin bend to give right of way for the upcoming heavy vehicle, ensure that you stop well before the bend by leaving enough space as the heavy vehicle will be tackling the curve by going to his extreme right.

Are you talking about Dhimbham ghats ie the ghat road from Sathy to Chamarajanagar. If so, it has 27 hair pin bends and very much doable. Just keep your fingers crossed that no truck breaks down enroute as this can create a major traffic jam.
The Masinagudi ghat road to Ooty has 36 hair pin bends.

Re: Bangalore - Pondicherry : Route Queries

Yes @suresh, I was referring to Dhimbam ghats from Chamarajnagar to Sathy-27 HP bends, only.
Truck breakdowns of course will be a problem,I agree.Thats one of the reasons for hill driving hesitation.
As an alternative,If I follow,Bangalore/Krishnagiri/Arcot/Vandavasi route:-the Mys-Blr route issues and long Krishnagiri toll wait are cons. But driving wise, no issues as it is ghat free and I am comfortable there. However, yet to decide.

I keep using 42LM for long drives.
The way I use it is keep the broad route division handy, decided based upon feedback from various sources, and use the breakup to set up small trip plans on the device.
Take a broad view of path before starting for each via point and route suggested between each pair, this avoids searches on the run and unnecessary diversions.

Re: Bangalore - Pondicherry : Route Queries

So! Going to Pondicherry tomorrow. Google throws this suggestion of taking the Chitoor route, starting point being my home. My last two trips has been from Hosur-Vellor-Cheyyar-Pondicherry back and forth, I was thinking if this route suggested by google is better? Last time I was stuck in Krishnagiri and Hosur toll for more than 90 minutes. Don't want to experience that ever again.

You can expect long waiting time this evening at the toll plazas considering the sankranti holiday + the regular week end. Start early tomorrow morning say by 4 30 AM and stick to the GQ as against the Old madras road.

Road widening is going on in certain sections of NH4 but its not anything unmanageable. You'll face a bit of traffic around Ranipet. Other than that, it should be a fairly easy drive.
