Ongoing road work between Hosur and Krishnagiri, added to that bad condition of road surface (especially on Krishnagiri-Hosur side). Past Krishnagiri apart from few deviations (counted 4 last week) there are no issues till Walahjpet.
Heavy traffic from there till Chennai.

Same old road with craters and frequent diversions beyond ranipet towards krishnagiri. Good thing is that 6 laying work to start and complete by 2014.

Did a Bangalore-Chennai-Bangalore drive yesterday. Owing to the continuous Telangana stir, we chose the usual Hosur-Krishnagiri-Vellore route. Since it was almost certain that we would return back the same day, we purchased the day pass/return journey at every toll thus saving some money there.

The road conditions remain predictable. There will be a slight delay due to truckers the moment you cross into Tamil Nadu, then a few well marked diversions and then a clear run till Krishnagiri. From Krishnagiri onwards you are greeted with a beautifully maintained 6 lane road although 3 ~ 4 diversions still exist. The last ~100 km to Chennai is a patchy dual carriageway which greatly reduces your overall speed.

Took an overall time of 5.5 hrs (Hebbal - Anna Salai) to cover 366 km while going and 6.5 hrs while returning back to Bangalore.

Toll Amounts:

1. Attibele - Rs 40
2. Krishnagiri - Rs 85
3. Vaniyambadi - Rs 100
4. Pallikonda - Rs 105
5. Chennasamudram - Rs 45

Just before Sriperumbudur we took a deviaion and went via Tambaram. That's why no mention of toll at Sriperumbudur.

Guess you took the SH to Tambaram. Take the Sriperumbudur - Oragadam - Tambaram road. Brilliant roads and hardly any traffic

Did a BLR-CHN-BLR trip over the weekend. Chose the Krishnagiri route both ways due to the Telengana issue.
Started by 5 PM Friday(jeevan bheema nagar), took an hour to reach attibelle toll. Crossing hosur was a pain but no major traffic jam fortunately. After crossing hosur it was sheer bliss till Velore. Made good time on this stretch without having to push too much. After Vellore, though the roads got rough, was saved by lack of traffic as it was already around 9 PM. I guess a 4/4.30 PM start from BLR is ideal for chennai bound people. Reached destination ( near Loyola) by 11.30 PM with couple of breaks for tea and dinner - A2B, Sholagiri and Hotel Sai Sangeeth ( seems to be a new one) near Chennasamudram toll.

Return - Started 3 PM Sunday. Not much traffic within the city, though there was a really long queue at the Sriperumputhur toll. Not sure what's the reason though. Good number of KA cars could be seen all the way but not much waiting at the tolls after that. Surprisingly not much of a hassle at Krishnagiri too contrary to my expectations. Reached BLR by 9 PM with just one break for tea.

The onwards route ( blr-chn) has most of the work done while on the return there were more diversions. I would say it's not much of a problem if the traffic is not too bad.

Is the flyover at Vandalur completed? This I thought was one major hassle earlier. Also I guess its a 6-lane from Vandalur to Oragadam thanks to the automotive corridor?

Yes the flyover is open but says Walajabad. Hence need to ensure that you go below the flyover near Apollo tyres and take a U turn after Renault. Its a 4 lane corridor.

Also what is the status on Metro ? Is it still barricaded from Tambaram to Kathipara junction not allowing any U-turns or cross turns? Just trying to evaluate that by gaining the Orgadam part of low traffic and good roads, what one has to lose while getting back to the city.

Did not see any barricades from Tambaram to Airport. After crossing the Raddison, there are still a few barricades as you get closer to Kathipara.
But on the whole the structural work for the metro seems complete and hence there is a lot more space as compared to a year ago. Did not check for U turns etc. as I was going towards Guindy.

Bangalore - Madras : Sunday morning : 0545 (ITPL) - 1145 (Paalavaakkam).

From Krishnagiri to a little after Vellore the roads are excellent. From that point, till Madras the road is patchy.

Madras - Bangalore : Monday afternoon : 1300 (Mount Road) - 1900 (ITPL) - Monday traffic at both ends - Bangalore was worse.

Take care of big dips / jolts on a bridge (on top of the bridge) while going from Bangalore to Madras after the Kanchipuram intersection; also, a big dip (Madras - Bangalore) just when you see the Ratnagiri Murugan temple. Better to be slow at these two points.

Chitoot-Palamaner-Mulbagal : Good/Decent 2-lanes. Can have some truck traffic.
Mulbagal bypass has rough patches.

Mulbagal-BLR : Beautiful 4-lane.
