Re: Bangalore - Mysore Expressway Thread

I will need to get to Hosur from Mysore on the 6th of Oct. Planning to start around 6 PM dude to certain commitments.

Which route will be less crowded - the expressway or Kanakapura route? Anyone tried the Kanakapura route? Is the road still good?

From toll to toll ~ 60 mins with cruise control at 94 kmph. You will save time as well as about ~ 3L diesel just within that stretch itself if you use the tollway vs Kanakapura road. The Kanakpura road is also very good but nowhere near this free flowing, you hardly use the brake pedal or accelerator.

I'll take your word then. My fear was that it's a Sunday evening with lots of folks returning to Bangalore after the weekend along with the risk of getting stuck before getting into Nice road as mentioned by itwasntme.

This is the Dussehra time and is the start of the Dussehra holidays for schools. So I think inflow into Bangalore will be less than normal. Most traffic will head out. You can take a call based on what Gmaps shows. Malavalli -Kanakpura-Bangalore is also smooth now since the bypasses of all towns between Malavalli and Bangalore are open.

Re: Bangalore - Mysore Expressway Thread

Is driving <100 kmph on Nice Road good enough (any lane)? Any other precautions to take? If one has to drive on the right lane at <100 kmph due to slower vehicles on left lanes, is that a problem?

Given the trucks traffic on all lanes of nice road, 100kmph will be rash driving. I'll suggest to go with the flow and not hard accelerate. Because you will accelerate and be stuck behind another vehicle within a minute.

As per court order 80kmph is the max limit even on highway and expressways, but cops are kind enough to allow 100kmph.

As per this article, cars have a limit of 120 kmph on Nice road. Is this incorrect?

Correct. Was raised recently to 120 for cars but not advertised too much.

Re: Bangalore - Mysore Expressway Thread

Was on the Bangalore - Mysore expressway on way to Coorg for Dusherra weekend and unware of the speed restrictions imposed, was crusing at 110. When reached Coorg, noticed an SMS from KSP and a speeding ticket for INR1000 .

On the way back, maintained a speed of 100 and eagerly checked for any message on reaching Bangalore - no message . Frankly, while crusing at 100 did save some fuel as the fuel efficiency on the ODO went up by 2 KMPL which was quite efficient. I now do feel that rather than accelerating / braking frequently, cruising at the speed limit will definitely save money - from the fuel saved and speeding tickets

Re: Bangalore - Mysore Expressway Thread

I had to make a trip from Bangalore to Mysore and back. Knowing the speed limits, I set my cruise control to 97 km/h according to the GPS (104 km/h on the odometer). I was flagged by a couple of speed monitors at that speed, possibly because I was in the middle lane and even once while in the right lane. After the Ramanagara bypass, I was stopped by the police, but they couldn’t find any violation; they simply checked my driving license and let me go without any questions.

Cruising at 98 km/h definitely improved fuel efficiency and felt safer since most drivers, except for a few, followed the speed limit. However, it was quite boring, and I was worried I might doze off while driving.

Yes I too came across this last Thursday when returning from Mysore. I just went past the Gananguru Toll and there was a cop with a device standing athwart my lane so of course I halted. He asked me my car number and checked for violations. Didn't find any so smiled and let me go.

Then on Friday night coming back from a function- must have been 1230 am (terribly late by my standards), I noticed there was a barricade at Agara lake and lots of cars and bikes piled up. Stopped and a cop came along and asked me to blow into his breathalyser. I was more than happy to do so and of course he found nothing. So he smiled and let me go.

It would be both sensible and in my book, merely good manners, to follow the rules laid down by the powers that be.

But then, clearly, it is increasingly evident that the ‘rule-followers’ are in the minority in our country.

Re: Bangalore - Mysore Expressway Thread

Hi, I was recently stopped by police in bangalore-mysore expressway and was handed over 2 speeding violations(102km/h & 104km/h) and had to pay 1000/- each. I was under the impression that 5 km/h tolerance limit is there and remember reading an article with that information. Anybody has any concrete info regarding this? Thanks

5km/h tolerance is already included in their measurement. So it is actually you were driving at 107km/h & 109km/h.

I totally agree with this. It is so boring to drive on the BMEW with CC engaged for very long stretches and everyone (more or less) following lane discipline and the speed limit. So what I do to keep myself occupied is to indulge in mental calculations...

...one of which was to figure out the tolerance for sectional speed limits. The TL;DR is that it is only 10 seconds. That is, if the distance between camera 1 and camera 2 is 20 km, then you are expected to cover that distance in 12 minutes or more (given 100 kmph speed limit). The system allows you a leeway of only 10 seconds on top of that. For 20 km, that works out to a permissible limit of 101.4 kmph.
