Re: Bangalore - Mysore Expressway Thread

So after getting fined on the way to Mysore, on the way back I clocked 90kph on the cruise control and drove all the way back. It was tough sometimes as the road keeps winding, and maintaining speeds below 100kph manually in 4th gear meant the legs hurt to maintain a constant light pressure.

Also, overtaking slower vehicles was tricky, as the middle and left lanes have 80, 60kph speed limits (indicated as printed on the roads and overhead signs). So you have to slow down first to below 80kph, and then hope the right lane vehicle you want to overtake drops speeds to below 80kph, and then overtake from the middle lane back to the right lane. The reduced speeds in the left and middle lanes makes them unusable for cars above 80kph.

The 114km stretch took exactly 1.5 hours with an average speed of 75kph, and a 22kpl fuel efficiency. Pretty boring, and I was glad when I hit the Nice road.

Re: Bangalore - Mysore Expressway Thread

I had a very pleasant experience of going to Mysore and back on 16th. So far no traffic violation reported.

The traffic was sparse being the middle of a long weekend. I had set the cruise control between 90 to 95 kmph keeping some room for error. I do not trust the system to have very accurate readings.
Most of the cars were within the speed limit and truck also in their respective lanes.Only during the return encountered a few very slow moving trucks in the fastest lane and one truck driving the wrong way. I have to extract the footage and send to authorities.

There were some very smart car drivers going well over the speed limit but the moment the speed camera is seen, they try to closely tail a car so that their front number plate gets hidden. Not sure if it worked or if there is a camera to take a rear picture of the car as well. A constant 95kmph without interruption translates to almost the same average speed which is more than enough for me. I am happy with this and the car showed a fuel efficiency of 17kmpl for ~100km (2 litre NA petrol).

Re: Bangalore - Mysore Expressway Thread

Did Blr-Mys-Blr this weekend. Blr to Mysore on Saturday noon was a snooze fest. After reading a lot of scary 'Fine' stories in this thread, maintaned 80kmph most of the time. I somehow felt taking the service road would have been more engaging drive .

During return journey, encountered lot of traffic. Tried keeping cruise at 90kmph speed. First thing I did after reaching home is to check my SMS for any violations. Luckily nothing sa far. Tricky thing is you never know when speed limit changes from 100 to 80. Even if there are signboards, what if you are in between two large vehicles which are blocking your view of the signboard?

Many slow-moving vehicle were hogging the right most lane. Few were driving on the lane markings. Overall too much concentration required to traverse 120kms of this highway.

I don't think so, i took the service road on saturday on my bike, albeit started at 6:30 AM from bangalore. After 3 hours of speedbreaker journey i was n mysore with a 15 min break in between.

I took the kanapura route on the return leg and found that to be much more scenic and good roads overall. Took me 2 hr and 15 mins, I was stuck at nice road exit for a good 15 mins due to traffic otherwise its a 2 hour or less jouney from mysore. Which is stellar imo.

Its almost done. The only place where the single lane still exists is at the Brigade apartments near Kaggalipura. The rest of the stretch is a breeze to drive. Even the Harohalli bypass is now complete and operational.

Roads were fully laid, although road markings are missing in most places. Shoulders are still filled with mud and what not. Its in the final stages i would say a couple of months and should be good to go.
But even in the current stage i would prefer this route as it was a breeze to ride through. One advantage for me in this route is it directly connects to M pro palace, which is our preferred breakfast stop on the mysore ring road.

Kanakpura Bypass is not offcially open, but usable if you know how to get on to it.

BLR side (entry is between the red KSRTC bus and the barricade):

Malavalli side: At the end of the bypass, there's a gap wide enough for a car to squeeze through:

Halaguru bypass is open as well (bear left for bypass), even though Google Maps says it doesn't exist and asks you to go through the village.

There after, avoid all bypasses towards Chamarajanagar, they were not complete as of 2 weeks ago. Some can be done on bike, but one incomplete bridge led me to riding on uncultivated muddy fields.

Re: Bangalore - Mysore Expressway Thread

I'm part of a WhatsApp group of Bangalore <> Kerala travellers, with most members being regular travellers towards Calicut.
A couple of them reported that they received calls from Bidadi police about FIR being lodged in their name for speeds exceeding 130kmph on the BLR <> MYS highway. They were asked to appear in the station along with the vehicle. Apparently, there were about 15ppl at the station for similar offence.
They were let off on bail and were told that they will be notified about the court appearance date.

Re: Bangalore - Mysore Expressway Thread

Both VRL and the particular driver should penalised heavily.

Re: Bangalore - Mysore Expressway Thread

Instead of limiting speed based on lanes, they should have limited based on the type of vehicle. Setting speed limits per lane is not easy to follow. What if someone is going at 85 on the right most lane and you want to pass him ?

There are physical speed limit signboards along the expressway mentioning 100kmph speed limit for cars and 80kmph for trucks.

Last week, state police announced they would register FIRs against drivers on highways if they crossed the 130kmph speed threshold. “On the first day, we registered FIRs against 33 drivers, and on Friday, 43 vehicles were booked. We’ve not booked anyone for just touching 130kmph; all errant drivers were given an error margin of 5-10 km over and above 130 kmph,” an officer said. A majority of the cases were booked between Ramanagara and Mandya on both days. Errant drivers could face imprisonment up to six months or fine of Rs 1,000 or both.

Looks like they were caught unaware of the new rules regarding FIR for crossing 130kmph or about the average speed rules. The cameras were in place for a while and usual practice of slowing down at camera spot and then speeding to glory would have been the case here. Average speed till 120kmph (error margin as per the cop) could have gotten away with a fine, but for averaging 130+ means they would have crossed much above at some point, meaning they were flouting the speed limits at will!

Re: Bangalore - Mysore Expressway Thread

Drove on the Mysore Expressway last weekend and while its extremely stress-free driving, one can really make friends with adjacent lane car passengers as most are on cruise control at 95 km/h and you have 90 mins to make deep friendship

Following is my observation and feedback after the drive
1) Speed limit check and fines is need of the hour as people use to drive really fast before

2) It would help to change the blanket rule of 100km/h speed limit to 120km/h on straight road and 60-80km/h during curves. Felt at many places the cars were cruising on curves at little higher speeds whereas 100km/h on arrow straight section felt less. I am sure the AI cameras can be calibrated to identify the avg speed between 2 cameras!

2) Adequate information should be shared on end-to-end individual lane speed limit if it is the criteria considered for fines. It would help if the authorities track maximum speed limit for respective vehicles (e.g. 100km/h for Cars and 80km/h for heavy vehicles etc.) rather than limiting the speed limit on middle and left lanes.
By doing this, it would be possible to overtake slow moving vehicles in middle lane and left lanes and truly use the first lane as overtaking lane

There were no sign boards highlighting the penalties for speed limits on middle and left lane - all sign boards mentioned about top speed of 100 km/h only!

3) Synchronization of lane speed limit and section speed limit should be done. We saw few sections where the sectional speed limit was reduced to 80 km/h but the print on road still showed 100km/h for first lane.

Overall, it was confusing and still not sure if a challan will be issued, though we ensured that the overall speed limit never crossed 100 km/h at any point

Thanks. Drove to Mysuru and back in last 2 days. They should remove the 80kmph written on center lane. Its only for trucks. Cars have 100kmph I guess on all 3 lanes.

There are still some signs which say 80 followed by another saying 100 few metres apart. Hope they clean up the signs and make it less confusing.

Took one of my cars with no cruise control and was not that bad. The whole traffic seems so well behaved with everyone driving great So its all about effective enforcement
