re: Mumbai - Pune - Kolhapur - Goa : Route Queries

@deutscheafrikar:

Actually I was referring to an item dated 6th Jan, 2013, giving the link below:

http://oheraldo.in/News/Local%20News...way/69036.html

The link given by you is of 24th Dec, 2011, we can only hope that as per the report dated 6th Jan, 2013, at least the four laning work may start sometime in the near future.

Lets hope the Chorla route turns out to be the saving grace in the meanwhile,

Some news on the Belgaum -Anmod section of NH4A : http://allaboutbelgaum.com/infrastru...tion-on-trees/

Some of the old trees have faced the axe. These were huge trees, it used to be like riding under a canopy. Hope the road quality is good..

I still can not understand why they have two cut trees on both sides of road for 4 laning work. They can always at least save trees on one side and careful planning can save the trees on both sides.

May be they look forward to get huge profit by cutting full grown trees along the highway.

"Belgaum - Jamboti -Kanakumbi - Chorla - Sanquelim.
This drive is wonderful. Don't miss it.

If, on the other hand, you happen to go to Goa by the Amboli ghat route:
1. Take the Sankeshwar - Gadhinglaj - Ajara road and not the Nipani - Ajara road. The former is better.
2. 2 kms ahead of Ajara (i.e. towards Amboli) is one Hotel Minerva. Good food and enough parking.

Hi Aanandb - Is Belgaum - Chorla the recommended route? I usually use the Sankeshwar - Amboli route.

Yes. Assuming you have the (extra) time for enjoying it.
Also, look up the details in post No.982 in this thread.

re: Mumbai - Pune - Kolhapur - Goa : Route Queries

Did Navi Mumbai ( Nerul) - Goa last weekend i.e on 25th

Route

Nerul ( Navi Mumbai ) - Pune - Nipani - Sankeshwar - Gadhinglaj - Ajara - Sawantwadi - Mapusa - Baga beach.

This route was taken considering the expert advice from our team bhpians.

We started late on 25th so we halted for the night at Hotel Satyawati on the highway junction.

We started next day at 9.30 AM and took the Sankeshwar - Gadhinglaj - Ajara Sawantwadi route.

The road is good except few stretches, we reached sawantwadi at 11.30 AM

We stopped for 15 mins at 1 spot on the Amboli Ghat to take some snaps.

On the return journey we took the NH17 route to access the condition as of now.

Again we started late at 3.30 PM on 28th, so there was a lot of night driving. We had many drivers so driving all through the night was not an issue. We reached Kharghar at 2.30 AM

Road conidtion

The sawantwadi bypass is ready , it is 17KM long, you directly reach Kudal.

The tarmac condition is very good, but traffic is horrible on the NH17 road.

Road widening work is going on near the Vadkhal sections.

This road is for those who like to drive on single carriage road with lot too may curves.

Day driving would be great on NH17 for the scenic beauty.

Thank you for this most welcome information. Is it a toll road?

Hi Darryl,

Sawantwadi bypass, This is still in construction stage , so there is no toll.

When coming back from Goa I used NH-17 all the away , Toll which I paid is only Rs.10/- that is at pen.

While going I used Express way and NH-4, total toll paid was somewhere around Rs. 550/-

Hi Allauddin,
How is the condition of the NH17? Is the surface good all the way or are there any bad patches
Cheers

I guess the toll will come later.

The last time I drove that way (about a year ago) the end of the new bypass had been barricaded, possibly the road wasn't complete either. I'll be making a short trip to Malvan sometime in the next 3-4 weeks, and it's good to know I can save probably 20 minutes in each direction ... if the new road surface is what I would expect it to be.

NH-17 surface is smooth now, no potholes, but there are few diversions upto mangaon due to road widening, I cannot recollect the exact location , as I was driving during night time.

I should appreciate the authorities for managing the diversions by putting up good plastic dividers, you can still maintain a good speed at these diversions.

if you are going from Mumbai to goa via NH-17, then you can use the chirner road as follows :
Vashi - Palm beach road - Ulwe - Chirner - Pen.

This route will bypass panvel , palaspa phata, karnala ghat. you will save atleast 20 to 30 mins.

if you have any doubt, see the attached image.

or you can use maps.google.com to map this route, you will have a better understanding.

cheers

re: Mumbai - Pune - Kolhapur - Goa : Route Queries

Hi Guys,
Leaving for Goa the day after tomorrow.
Has anyone used the Chorla - Sanquelim road recently and if so would be much obliged if you could give me an update on the road condition and detailed directions as well. How far does one have to go into Belgaum before turning off at Peeranwadi? Is it worth it or should one stick to the tried and tested Sankeshwar - Ajra road? Is it shorter? Any info would be most welcome.

Regards,
SS
