Pune - Diveagar : Route Queries

Team,

I am visiting Diveagar this weekend. I have following queries:

1. I have heard that Paud - Tamhini road is not in good shape, forcing speeds to drop to lower 20's. Has any body travelled off late on this route and has an update?

2. I am planning to take expressway and take exit at Khopoli and join NH17 at Nagothane going via Pali. Has anybody travelled off late on Khopoli - Pali - Nagothane road and know the condition of this road?

I will be driving my faithful Indica. The reasons for asking these queries is that my M-I-L is travelling with us and she has back pain problem.

Thanks and Appreciate for your inputs

take care and drive safely

hi,
1] paud tamhini is not in good shape but just drivable.
paud to mulashi dam is good road.
mulashi dam to end of lake is also some 50%good road.
end of lake to bhira dam pipeline, the road is bad.
bhira dam pipeline to end of tamhini ghat, mixed road.
end of tamhini ghat to vile village, good road.
vile-nizampur-mangaon, good road for 80 speed.
2] via expressway,
upto khopoli toll plaza, no problem.
khopoli toll plaza to pali, mixed road. some stetch good, some stetch bad.
pali to nagothane, mixed road.

as you mentioned that you are traveling with you M-I-L, i think you should go by expressway. little longer and little painful than tamhini ghat.

in marathi, i will call it,
dagadapeksha vit mau.[ brick is softer than stone.]

Khopoli - pali - Nagothane road is ok. NH17 is excellent without any problems. I travel to Roha quite often.

Dude, take Ashish's advice and go via the expresshighway. I have travelled via the paud-tamhini route and thats NOT the route for taking your MIL. I have written a travelogue on this some months ago. Had travelled from Pune to Harihareshwar. Check out the post for the detailed write up.

I did the Pune-Harihareshwar-Diveagar route last week.
Onward journey : Pune - Paud - Mulshi Road - Tamihini - Nizampur - Mangaon - Mhasala - Harihareshwar
Pune to Paud - Roads are good
Paud to mulshi - Roads are good
Mulshi to Tamihini - Roads are OK (mix of good and bad)
Tamihini Ghat is amazing very good roads and full of scenic beauty. Made a lot of stops here, even had a quick picnic en route.
Tamihini-Nizampur - Roads are very good
Nizampur - Mangaon - Roads are very good
Mangaon - Mhasala - Roads are good, but couple of steep ghat sections.
Mhasala - Harihareswar - Roads are in bad shape (for about half of the way), Stressful drive due to narrow ghat roads and horribly bad state transport bus drivers
Time taken : 5.5 hrs including a picnic of 45 mins and lot of photo stops.

Return Journey :
Harihareshwar - Shrivardhan - Diveagar - Mhasala - Mangaon - Nagothan - Pali - Khapoli - Pune (via E-way)
Harihareshwar - Shrivardhan - Good winding state highways in good condition.
Shrivardhan - Diveagar - OK roads but with great view of the Arabian Sea.
Diveagar - Mhasala - Very good winding state highways
Mhasala - Mangaon - Roads are good, but couple of steep ghat sections.
Mangaon - Nagothan - NH 17 great road, but a bit of truck traffic
Nagothan - Khapoli - Great roads through scenic forests.
Khapoli - Pune - Boring but the very fast E-way

Total Odo reading of 432 kms.
Those planning for a diveagar trip from Pune please be sure to take the tamihini section, its really worth it. Please plan your stay at Diveagar instead of Harihareshwar. Facilities like restaurants/food joints are very less in harihareshwar, and MTDC resort there is just about OK.

I did this stretch (while going eWay-Khopoli-Pen - good road) and coming back Nagothane-Pali-Khopoli-eWay)only this last sunday afternoon (july 18) and the road is in good shape. Even in constant rain I could keep about 50-60kph (as not much traffic either) in my faithful Indica too

Definitely better than Tamhini overall (which I have not been in a year , but have been on many times in the past and its never in good shape in monsoons - though I see a post praising Tamhini roads above so maybe I'm wrong?

MX6 the post from Rkavthekar was back in 2009 thats what happens when you be on Tbhp till late in the night. BTW enjoy your trip and be sure to carry an umbrella as it rains pretty much all through the day at harihareswar.

Lol. Yeah. It was around 1:15 when I posted that. Didn't realise that it was an old thread. Anyway, not planning on any umbrella. I'm going there to soak in the rains. And thankfully, it's been raining a bit in Pune since last night.

^Neither did I realise that I was posting non-sense to a 1+ yr old thread.
On a monsoon trip, going out with umbrella/raincoats is just not right! You will get soaked in any case, as my friends found out on a trek to Lohgad last year when I was the only one w/o any rainywear (and I promptly changed into a dry shirt when we got back down to the car haha).

MX6, take care on the roads, NH-17 has plenty of places with flooding - check the news (marathi news channels preferably) before you leave. (though currently most problems are near Dapoli-Khed and Malvan-Sindhudurg)

enjoy your trip!

Thanks for the pointer Abhay. Don't have tv connection at home. So cut off from news. The only source of information for me is T-BHP.
Carrying an umbrella in a trek is not advicable. Especially when there's a wind, you tend to get pushed due to the umbrella and might lose grip. Rain coats are suggested instead.

I was suggesting even ditching raincoats/jackets as you still get wet with the ferocious rain on top of mountains - while my friends thought they could beat it with their rain-wear

You can check esakal.com/loksatta for regional/MH weather related news updates.
