re: Bangalore - Pune - Mumbai: Route updates & Eateries

Spotted one more restaurant between Chitradurga & Hiriyur, called Atithya ( if I remember right). It's on the left before Hiriyur. Hence an option before the Kamat at Sira.

Hello,
I am doing a solo motorcycle (Thunderbird 500) trip from Bangalore to Lonavala on 22nd October & return on 25th October. I request advice on following firstly for my ONWARD journey:
1. Start time: I can start at 3 am or even earlier. Is it late or early ? Note I am near MG road. Want to be on open safe roads at dawn when the light plays tricks for safety.
2. Fuel stops : My bike has range of 500 kms at 120 kmph but I will do 80-100 kmph. Fuel stops at 350-400 kms are ideal. Which locations should I plan?
3. Food stops: Priority here is clean toilets, visibility of bike at all times as it will have luggage & peace. Do not want to leave the highway. Want to stop every 150-200 kms. Ideally if I can club fuel & food breaks.
4. Tips: I am on a motorcycle so tolls don't apply so any lane keeping advice? Also safety is paramount so any input on that matter is welcome.
P.S: Any fellow travellers are welcome to join.
Thank you.

Fantastic. Bon voyage, shaikhmimran.

Please note that Thunderbird 500's odometer/speedometer/fuel gauge are erratic and not accurate. They have +6% error, in my calculation.

There are a couple of BP/HP COCOOs on LHS on the Ranebennur bypass, while riding from Bangalore towards Dharwad. You can have bird's tankful there. Then again, have a tankful at KA border on RHS, just before entering MH as fuel is costlier in MH than KA. I think, MH is the only state that beats KA black and blue, when it comes to fuel prices!

Food stops
There are many Kamat Upachars, Vithal Kamats, McDs, CCDs..on both the sides of NH 4. But, don't miss this on the RHS, while riding from Bangalore towards Lonavala, located some 35 km after Kolhapur with clean loo, good food and ample parking.

Always, ride on the left-most lane. Wherever there is a dedicated lane for the two-wheelers, ride on that. Of course, this does not apply, when overtaking big brothers!

re: Bangalore - Pune - Mumbai : Route updates & Eateries

Here is an attempt, a comprehensive one, as much as I could to include details regarding Food & Fuel options between Mumbai - Pune- Bangalore that would help most of the queries get addressed in this single post rather than look elsewhere. Note: The above list for Food breaks has been factored with a balance between Food and cleanliness of the Rest rooms. Remember that you cannot get the best combination of both at every location mentioned but these are definitely places you really can bank upon on this highway. Since past 8 Years, I have been driving very regularly on this section and have ventured (Or dared) into almost each of the locations along with family in tow. So, if you have apprehensions if these are family friendly places, be assured that each of these are family friendly break points.

I have as well refueled at each of the given locations at least once over the past few years in Petrol and Diesel cars.

Wow! I am impressed!! Totally!!!

I have done Pune Mumbai almost 2~4 times a month from 2008 and I cannot prepare such a good document for just that part too.

I have plans to do Pune Bangalore some time. I am going to print this and keep with me at that time.

Thanks, In fact, I would suggest you bookmark this post URL rather than printing since it has Google Map location for each of the POIs mentioned and that can always help you when on road in terms of locating it without much ado by merely turning on the GPS and using the maps.

Nice idea.
Thanks.

I just might do both!!

Ha Ha !! Some times wife and daughters can chip in - if I have handy papers!

Of course, both my daughters are comfortable with Google Maps and can help quite a bit in the navigation. (If they do not fall asleep - of course!)

This is just brilliant. I am short of words to praise you for doing this for everyone. You give a new meaning to the phrase Sharing is Caring

Good to see so many places to eat. I have traveled these roads many times but always stick to road side eateries due to lack of knowledge. Now your guide will be of immense help.

Hi Parag

Thank you for an extensive info on eateries and fuel stations on this route. I have travelled once in this route from Bangalore to Mumbai and have many more trips to look forward to on this route. I will definitely bookmark this post as it comes very handy especially when travelling with family. Wish you more happy miles.

Thanks
Arun

Parag, this is a phenomenal endeavour on your part and would be extremely useful for people taking this route, especially for the first timers like me ( will be travelling in the beginning of November ) - many thanks.

By any chance, can you suggest any hotels near NICE Road please ( want to stay as close to NH4 as possible ), where I can crash for a night with family and have a peaceful slumber with the car parked within the hotel premises ?

Not anything to rely anywhere near NICE Road junction or even Tumkur road for that matter.

If your destination is beyond Bangalore towards Hosur/Krishnagari, you have 2 options:

1. Halt for the night at Tumkur - Naveen Regency - Mixed reviews but still a better place compared to shady options on Tumkur Road.

2. Cross NICE Road and stay at Hosur - Sarovar Portico is quite popular here.

3. If you are running really late that you want to settle for the night much before Tumkur, Apoorva Resorts is a good location after Davanagere Bypass ends (See my main post for the Maps link).

Apart from this, you have Golden Palms and Taj Vivanta on Tumkur road that would almost take 10-15 minutes for you to enter NICE Road but not VFM options unless you are lucky and manage some cheaper prices due to some offers.

15.Soul Curry - After Wakad Intersection (Flyover), Pune Bypass. Plenty options right here
Thanks a lot Parag!
Immensely important information for wanderers like us..

I think you will permit me to make a correction though...

'Soul Curry' has shut down in that location. There is a kinder-garden school at that place now As to whether it has shifted to some other location, I cannot be sure. I miss going there. I used to love the appams and stew they served with sweet coconut milk.

Cheers

Thanks Coriollis and hence I mentioned that there are a lot more next and around this location for your choice ☺. I didn't know Soul Curry is now closed. It was many years back I went there but as of today keep spotting 10s of restaurants near Indira College with lots of highway commuters stopping by including Joshi Vadevale if I remember.

In have seen few places shut shop here and open again with a new name.

Ranjhai has been my favorite but then it may not really be a highway friendly place to recommend.

Your efforts are truly commendable, and am sure will be of immense use to the vast population of info seekers here. Couldn't have asked for more. I rarely use emoticons - but had there been one for a 'hats-off', I would have used it here.

Hi Folks,

I am driving this Thursday from Pune to Bangalore , starting around 5 AM sharp .

Any inputs if anyone recently just taken this route on present road conditions till Kholapur ?
