Am not sure on the current road condition since it has been raining these days and I have never been to these places before.

Help needed on the below routes which are easier and less risky :

Blore to Dharmastala
Dharmastala to Kukke
Kukke to Mysore
The entire Shiradi ghat is good but with some potholes. You can choose this road instead of Charmadi which is more slippery during rainy seasons. Strech of about 6 Kms from Gundya to Dharmasthala is bit bad but can be managed.

Re: The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

Hi,

Planning a trip to Udupi via Shiradi. Need help on the route beyond Uppinangadi. I see the following options in Google map:

1. Uppinangadi-Belthangadi-Karkala-Udupi
2. Uppinangadi-BC.Road-Kateel-Karnad-Udupi
3. Uppinangadi-Mangalore-Udupi

Which one should I take?

If you are coming till Uppinangady via the Shirady, Suggest on the Mangalore option. The roads are whole lot wider and faster. Some deviation on the Surathkal - Udupi sector exist. However these are minor and easily maneuverable.

The first one is straight and direct. (Via Belthangady/Karkala). Check with @Samurai most times he takes that route.

Belthangady-Karkala-Udupi is mostly fine. Don't know about Uppinangadi-Belthangadi.

Since you are driving there for first time, go to Sullia from Kukke and then take a left towards Mysore. Kukke - Sullia is in pristine condition. There is a shortcut to reach Sullia - Mysore road without touching Sullia but you may get confused there. The shortcut passes through some dense forests and the road condition is bad for around 8 km on that road. Some work is in progress between Sullia - Sampaje but should be manageable.

Uppinangadi - Belthangadi was in good shape around 3 months back. I believe it should be in the same condition now.

Am all set to start tomorrow morning. Just want to know few more options :
1. Can I bypass Hassan and continue to sakleshpur ?

2. Heard going through belur saves some kms.

Current route on my mind is :Nelamangala - Hassan - sakleshpur - gundya - dharmastala

1. Yes. On the fork after 'Vidhatha' dhaba, keep left to get onto the bypass.

2. The belur route takes you via charmady to dharmasthala. The routing would be like, Hassan > Belur > Kottigehara > Ujire > Dharmasthala.

Re: The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

Hi Bhpians,

Here is an update on the route. Had been to dharmastala and kukke , returned today

Route taken to Dharmastala : Nelamangala >> Hassan >> sakleshpura>>shiradi >> dharmastala

As many have commented, shiradi ghat is holding up but has few rough patches at few of the curves but driveable.

From Dharmastala to Kukke :

Initial plan was to come to gundya junction and go 22 kms to reach kukke but it has been raining cats and dogs there, we reached there on friday evening and it had been raining the whole day. As expected kumaradhara river was overflowing and traffic was halted.
Asked a few about any alternate route and this is what we took :

From Gundya go for about 10kms you will get small junction >> take a right and head towards Kadaba. From there take the route to Panja and from there Kukke. The round about is about 35 kms but it is better because I heard people waited overnight in cars and buses for the water level to go down so that they could cross the road.

gundya>>kadaba>>panja >> kukke

This route is narrow and you will go off the road if anything comes from opposite direction but road is good, advisable to travel during day time.

From Kukke towards Mysore :

Initial plan was to to somwarpet>>kushalnagar>>mysore but took this :

Sullya >> madikeri>>kushalnagar>>mysore

Few small stretches towards sullya is under construction but most of the route is good and one can enjoy the drive.

Re: The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

A cousin of mine is doing Bangalore-Dharmasthala this friday in his Honda Civic
Plannin to take BLR-Hassan-Sakleshpur-Dharmasthala route
Fellow BHPians Pls revert whether this road is doable on a Civic which is notorious for its low ground clearance
OR should he take the Mysore-Madikeri route

I did the shiradi ghat stretch recently - some of the craters have become really big - but can be side-stepped carefully. Please ask him to do the drive when there is plenty of daylight - night driving can result in bottoming out for the civic.

Re: The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

Mods: Please move it to a different area if found totally unacceptable here.

Found this link: http://www.nhai.asia/register/rgr/traffic.asp

Does complaining here on the state of the tolled roads in Mangalore (Pothole ridden in some places after BC Road towards Mangalore & Hopeless Service roads everywhere) make any difference? Anyone tried this before?

Re: The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

I drove the Shiradi again on Tuesday. Lot more potholes this time.

Here is the entire drive in 2x speed to reduce the length of the video by half.

Warning, what you are seeing is at twice the actual driving speed. Don't assume I was overspeeding.

Re: The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

Driving down to Mangalore tomorrow. After seeing Samurai's 2x speed video, I got inspired to take Shiradi route. Hoping to do this distance in 1x speed only.

Hope the roads are holding up in last one week. Has it really rained cats and dogs in last one week ?
