Oh! So it is like a net to them?

Thank you: Perhaps I was overthinking it and looking for something more simple. I failed to see the obvious!

My parents had an invisible nylon pigeon net & it worked just fine. Unlike the grill which is solid & provides good support for the pigeon to sit on, the nylon one isn't stable & that's one of the reasons why the the pigeon doesn't sit on the pigeon net wires. And of course it protects the grills, so the pigeon can't sit on the grill either.

I have shared what I used and judged as a good product. This is no way comparable to a nylon net and acts as a security grill without spoiling the aesthetics of any building.

re: Home Construction / Makeover / Maintenance Thread

Been seeing a lot of these pre-cast compound walls around. I assume these are easier to put up? How does it work, do the horizontal slabs get cast somewhere else and then they come assemble at the site? The only thing that will require on-site construction are the pillars? How much do these pre-cast walls cost? I'm seeing 80-100 per sq.ft. online. Any disadvantages to these over the traditional compound walls? And how long will the on-site work take, assembling the slabs (assuming the pillars have already been installed).

Thanks in advance for any replies!

Both pillars and slabs are precast and transported to the site. The Pillars are inserted 1 feet into the ground and gaps filled with concrete. The horizontal slabs are slid into the grooves present in the pillars.

The slabs are very heavy. Needs atleast 2 people to move around. Typically 3 member team does the job.

No disadvantages. In fact these are better than compound walls. A 60x40 site perimeter can be surrounded by these pre-cast pillars and slabs in 2-3 days with 3 people working.

My second floor gets very hot as it is the top floor. Suggestions for some type of insulation? Willing to do internal and/or external work too.

Heat Reflective paint - check on Amazon / paint shops / painting services like from Asian paints.

Another method quite a few use is to roof the terrace space with tile/sheets, with a metal frame built on the terrace. For such an option I would prefer tiles or asbestos/cement sheets since tin sheets cause noise during rains.

My daughter bought a new flat and has covered the open balconies and windows with "invisible grill" this would not only prevent pigeons from coming inside but more importantly provide a safeguard for her cat.

Thanks. What about corrugated sheets with built in insulation. It deadens the sound of the rain a lot. Would it work if I just made it 6" above the terrace floor? Will have to spend less for the fabrication then. Idea is to have an air barrier right?

You can use such sheets.

Regarding height - what can you do with 6' of clearance ? Also, more the space you leave, better the wind circulation.

(I have tried 8-9 feet of clearance in another setting, and the mistake is such that we are having to pull down the concrete slab. A couple of lakhs into the dust and debris - cost when steel was less than 50% of what it is today.)

You will have to spend more for more height, but more the clearance, more useable the space. Please dont compromise on this. (See experience mentioned above)

The heat resistant paints are made to reflect, rather than absorb, as much heat as possible.

I can tell the difference when I walk on our terrace: it is comfortable for my feet on days when bare concrete, like our drive, has me jumping up and down and running for shoes.

Even if you put some structure to give you an air gap, paint it! Otherwise, I can't see that you'd get anything other than a hot air gap!

Dont need the usable space, and dont want it visible from the road. Would look ugly, and that's why I'm thinking of a low level.

What mistake did you make?

We have the asian paints Dampproof on our terrace - Asian paints claims a "surface heat upto 10 degrees" reduction. In my experience - the surface temperature has significantly reduced, however the interiors feel marginally cooler.

Sheets with 6" gaps would also be a maintenance nightmare - you cannot keep the area free of dust. Good luck, if a cat decides it as a litter spot.
If the parapet walls are having open spaces/made of grill, it probably would still be effective as an insulator.

In that case, you could skip this solution completely, and use some heat reflective paint.

Do you get Asbestos sheets these days? Cancer causing stuff right? Thought it was all banned.
