You could say its a generic name. But those type of grey sheets are definitely available.

What I was talking about was not for security. There was already metal grills, but the pigeons would sit on those grills. The invisible nylon netting prevented the pigeons from sitting on the metal grills.

Asbestos causes Mesothelioma - a terminal lung cancer and it has been banned. But the sheets we use are actually cement sheets but mistakenly called as asbestos in some places.

Asbestos mining has been banned in India, but its import and use continues. So far only about 70 countries have completely banned asbestos. In India, asbestos cement has been rebranded as fibre cement, but make no mistake, it is asbestos.

Here is a screenshot from https://fcpma.in/, the Fibre Cement Products Manufacturers Association:

The EU banned chrysotile asbestos in 1999: link

The US EPA is on the verge of banning chrysotile, which is the only form of asbestos still used in the USA. link

Thanks. Never thought of that.

Does it really work for security? Cant it be cut with a bolt cutter?

Not applicable for us. We are on the 9th floor. For lower floors, you need to use a metal mesh kind of thing.

Yes it works, so far the product has been used only upon recommendation by architects and interior designers.

Engineer/architect recommendations

Hi,

We are planning to add a floor to our house in Bengaluru.

Any engineer/architect recommendations would be welcome.

Thanks in advance!

Yes, it can be cut. It is to keep birds out, not provide a deterrent to the determined thief

Another method quite a few use is to roof the terrace space with tile/sheets, with a metal frame built on the terrace. For such an option I would prefer tiles or asbestos/cement sheets since tin sheets cause noise during rains.
Heat reflective paint. Did this on my second floor roof (Master bedroom and my WFH office area) helps reduce interior temp by 6-8 C at least. totally recommended. Second would be a false ceiling as step 2

re: Home Construction / Makeover / Maintenance Thread

Anyone has got any ideas about sourcing natural rubble stones for construction in Bangalore? I have heard its easier to source that from the surrounding regions. I'm thinking of using natural stones for load bearing and other walls and some feature walls using rammed earth.
Thanks.

Easiest way to bring down heat is to use Dampproof from Asian paints as suggested by other members. It is claimed to reduce temperature by 10 degrees. But it has a downside. It is bright white, and when the sun shines, you cannot go on your roof as too much reflective light it hits the eyes and you would find it difficult to keep your eyes open. We had applied first coat as white, but since it was hurting the eyes, during second coat we mixed black pigment liquid from Asian paints to prepare a grey color. Our purpose was reducing dampness from roof, after October (not sure 2020 or 2021) rains that caused too much dampness and humidity, causing development of allergic molds in wooden furniture and roof. Only white colour reduces temperature to greatest extent, any other colour will have reduced effect for bringing down temperature. And my advise is to let roof get heated as much as possible in Bangalore, that is healthy. Use an AC for 2-3 months of summer. Should not cost more than 10k and it is quick and easy to apply using a roller (we did it DIY during lockdown time after cleaning roof with pressure washer).

Another option is to have transparent polycarbonate sheets on iron frame. But it would be expensive (>1L even for smallest roofs).

We are looking to get the damproof for our terrace. Could you please share the black pigment product link?

I think it was Universal Stainer from Asian Paints (bought from a local paint shop).

https://www.amazon.in/Asian-Paints-U.../dp/B07JBPL97W

We mixed it in Asian Paints Damp Proof to get desired grey color.
