3k is a very tight budget for a classy restaurant, but you could get biryanis and dessert at Lucky in Bandra. Or a few tandoori chickens and dishes at Pal. Alternatively, you could try working out some deal with the restaurants off Carter road, ex Kareems etc...Its a tough call, but its doable, not impossible. Best of luck buddy. Sorry I could not be of more assistance. And hey, dont forget to wish your friend a Very Happy Birthday on behalf of Team BHP.

There are a lot of good Thali Places in Mumbai. Veg. Thali food predominantly means Gujarati Thali in Mumbai. My favourites I will mention under.
The best was always "Shree Thaakar Bojnalaya" which is not the same as Thakker's Restaurant at Marine Lines, a 1st floor eating house in Kalba Devi on Dadi Sath Agyari Street.
Some time ago it shut shop to open again in a mucg smaller and swankier avtar. I have since not been there but till it shut down previously, it was the Thali place to go.
Then there is the "Friends Union Joshi Club" at Kalba Devi Prathana Samaj Area on the main road again the first floor. Its still there and just as good and wholesome. These places offer you home style Gujrati food where you will see a lot of home sick Gujus eating, so thats a good sign and a sure shot that it serves food as close to home as it gets.
"Rajdhani" mainly at Jhaveri Bazar and various other locations in Bombay and Golden Star Thali at Charni Road are good too but do not serve home style Gujju food. Golden Star is more Marwari and also better.
"Aram" off Mahim opp the Mahim Church was a great place to eat Kattchi Thali but I havnt been there in a long time too.
Non Gujju thali is great at Kalbadevi, Jhaveri Bazar area in a place called "Bhagat Tarachand" which specialises in Sindhi Veg. food. If you guys have not eaten there, you are missing something. Home style Sindhi food couples with a few north Indian staples are served with great authenticity. Pulkas with desi Ghee are must haves along with their yellow dal with a humble tadka and alu methi. Wash all his dowm with a cold glass of salted lassi, seerved in beer bottles (its called Katcchi Beer else where)
It makes one wonder some times as to how simple pleasures like these are not available so commonly in our city now.

they have the most simplest but the best food and their service is also very quick. there is nothing like "limited" except for the sweets. and 80 rs or so you get a thali which boasts of three vegetable, dal, kadhi, rice, pulav, bajra bhakri, phulka and end it up with chaas. sweets arent included in this 80 rs. i have been eating there since i was a child and still love to eat there whenever i am in kalbadevi area.

to add another, "Ramakrishna Boarding" adjacent to the Matunga Railway Station (E) at Matunga market (again on the 1st floor, whats with the 1st floor fetish of these spartan eateries?)
they have the most delicious South Indian Veg thali (both limited and unlimited but me, being the greedy pig that I am, always go in for an unlimited thali only to find out that i cant even eat as much as the limited thali offers... i should learn to control myself at these places)
This place is so clean that they even have a board there mentioning that if any guest would like to see the kitchen, they are welcome to do so, something not many restaurants would allow
Another place for a South Indian Thali (very spartan and very limited) is at the South Indian Concerns" also at Matunga (E) in the flower galli next to the South Indian temple or Matth. Simple meals of Sambar, Rice, two veggies (Avail, Pacchdi or a Thoran) with curd and the condiments for a paltry sum.
Both these places run out of food at very early hours so go there very very early for a meal.

to add to the list of thali restuarants of matunga, shri sunders bhojnalay near matunga station is also a great place for lunching. it is a small place but very good food. it also has limited timings so it is better to reach there early for lunch.

btw v-16, i think we have quite similar tastes.

Just had Lunch at Cafe Olympia at Colaba Causeway, precisely a little ahead of united colors of benetton.

has Chicken masala, was goood VFM dont know how much was it though, the caramel pudding was nice tooo. The chicken was skinny (thin).

Place: nice clean, old irani type restaurant, if you go between 1-2 you have to wait for the table.

quick service !! by the way is there any special thing on the menu card that I can try, please all the foodies let me know.

a Question to the regulars at Bagdadi, Colaba behind Taj: how on earth do they manage to get such a big chicken.they have been serving these from years and years. Their leg Piece is as big as the whole regular chicken (exagerating). but still are these steroid injected chickens.

Gogi any take on that...

Yes!!
Firstly I was at Olympia the day before, for lunch too. Yes their chicken or Mutton Masala is good. (both dishes come with the same gravy with just a change in the meat), to be had with the soft pav that they serve. Im told even the Bheja is good but then, again in the same gravy, so ive refrained from trying that.
Someone told me that the biryani was good there too but it was a sheer disappointment so im never eating that, there again.
I also am a regular at Baghdadi and the thing to eat there is the chilly fry. If one eats beef then that is the thing to have there.
The chicken (non steroid injected) is of course huge. It is a 750-800gm broiler chicken. That is no big deal as one can have the broilers as big (even upto 1.5 kgs so imagine the legs on that one)
Recommended, the chilly chicken (gravy) at Shalimar Restaurant near J.J. Hospital. Eat it with a crisp tandoori roti. (wierd combo but do try)
Sohail and Manaa, we should go together and explore some other places. Would be a great Foodlogue im sure. We can call it the Team-Bhp Food Guide
@ Manaa- I have tried the food at Sunders too, once but found it to be a tad too sweet. Maybe the wrong day. Ill give it another shot.

aaah Shalimar, Hop skip and jump from my place, but i dont go there muich to eat, reason : crowded , and waiting is too long sometimes though but i guess only when i want to eat there the whole world pops in LOLS.

Shalimar visits is only because of their Special Falooda for mom and wifey and HALF for me (not cold allowed). i like their Dal Gosht too. Will definately try to pick up the chilly chicken gravy with crisp tandoori roti.
Yeah i have also tried their Tiranga Kababs (chicken) three different colours i think one cooked in red chilly, the other in green chilly and dont know how they get the white one, but still its good for starter. each color 6 kababs.

Ok now time for Seekh, Chicken seekh at Sigdi, clare road, byculla next to Christ church school, one of the best i had, tender soft. One more place famous for Chicken seekh is at Mastan talau, Nagpada the lane which goes next to Goodluck motor driving school, the problem here is gets over before you can smell it lols i mean by 9 or latest by 10. No hotel or rest, its stand on the pavement and eat.. probably a small Charpai

talking about sheekhs, there is this guy behind Sadanand Hotel adjacent to Cafe Firdos at Crawford Market. By the day he is a cycle repair shop and come sundown, he makes the best Sheekh kebabs i have ever eaten. Thats the only thing he makes and with clock work precision. An adept hand full of meat, made into a ball and pasted on the skewer. Then on the coal sigri. All this in under 90 seconds or sometimes even under 60.
He has a huge Kadai of oil where he deep fries a roti and calls it a paratha, better to stay away from that and eat with pao or just on its own. The original Ustaad was Naseem, who has now retired to his village in quite a young age due to Diabetes and loosing eyesight. His recipe is intact, My advise is if you are in or around the area, jump for a few sheekhs. Served with a mint and tamrind chutney (which I politely refuse each time) and fresh cut onion rings with twings of fresh mint and lemon. (I dont eat these too as I cant stand raw onions)
You can then walk across to Badshah Cold Drink House quite close and gulp down a Royal Falooda.
Sheekh KEbabs at Sarvi (Nagpada) were very famous at one time but I have tried them on occasions and found them very tasteless and bland. To top all that, they were always under cooked.(Meat Sushi anyone?) Not my cup of tea.
Talking about teas where does one get a cup of good Irani style tea with a crisp Brun Maska sprinkled with sugar granules anymore? I can count the places on my fingers now with not so many of these restaurants left.

Anyone tried the "greens" near Cadel Road/Shivaji Park. Nice food...First time in my life I had Veg crispy that was crispy and non oily!
