Re: Safe recreational activities during the coronavirus pandemic

Nice and much needed thread! Thanks!

I am catching up on all the indoor pending work. My nature of work may not permit me work from home but yesterday being a Sunday, I was mostly indoors except for some grocery shopping. What I plan to do:

1. Clean the mess inside the home
2. Enjoy some music- esp my vinyl collection
3. Play some musical instruments like the guitar- in fact this is one of the best pastime for those who can play.
4. Improve my culinary skills.
5. Watch movies.

Actually there is some speculation that this may bring a boom of babies. The terms they are using is 'disaster baby'! And they will be called 'coronials'!

Re: Safe recreational activities during the coronavirus pandemic

Decided to go for a drive in the evening and return back without stopping at a crowded restaurant or coffee shop.

Re: Safe recreational activities during the coronavirus pandemic

I went to the nearby bookshop and bought as many Geronimo Stilton and Wimpy Kid books as I could find - about 40 of them. I am hoping this keeps my daughter away from the phone / TV at home. Not sure when the schools will re-open.

Also planning to teach her how to ride a bicycle.

Got this forward in Whats app : " Eventually, everyone will be quarantined to their houses with no sports to watch and 9 months from now a boom of babies will be born and we will call them coronials"

Re: Safe recreational activities during the coronavirus pandemic

I have Goa vacation planned in second week of April. All of my bookings are non-refundable.

Due to this Corona scare, I am just not sure what to do? Though the trip is still 20-25 days away, what are all your suggestions.

I don't think you have a lot to worry; most hotels and airlines have already put out statements saying they'll honor 100% refunds. If someone is not obliging, a social media post should get things moving.

In times where Govts. have imposed blanket closure of public places, it is reasonable that people will cancel trips.

The simple answer is, you should cancel considering the risks: at the airport, restaurants, public places and so on. (I don't think the rationale that the virus can't survive tropical temperatures has been scientifically validated yet)

Totally not worth risking your health. Stay home and be safe.

My list is as follows:
1. Read Magazines (I subscribe to the print edition of Harvard Business Review)
2. Catch up on books
3. Bicycle more (Adding to the 640 miles YTD)

Wonderful, but would suggest you get padding for the elbow and knee to reduce the impact of the (inevitable) fall.

Re: Safe recreational activities during the coronavirus pandemic

It turns out swimming pool is one activity that is safe even in this situation. The World Health Organisation sets chlorination targets at a level much higher than is required to kill viruses like Covid-19. In a report on Water Sanitation Health, the WHO details 15 cases of viral outbreaks in swimming pools – nine of which were linked to improper or inadequate chlorination. It recommends a chlorination level of 15mg.min/litre – which is enough to kill most viruses.

Yet, most apartments have closed their swimming pools too.

Had to cancel my trip to Wayanad which was scheduled for the Good Friday weekend. Was looking forward to the drive since its a lovely route most of the way. However, discretion is the better part of valour and so postponed this trip till things normalise. I would suggest you do the same. Core principle in these times is that anything other than necessary travel should be avoided.

Yes.

However, all corporation pools in bangalore are closed for a week. I got a call from my pool that it may last even longer.

They are not taking chances. Even if it does not spread in water due to chlorine, its possible for the infection to spread in the shower and common areas. Further , none of the corporation pools in bangalore have any kind of monitoring whatsoever.

Re: Safe recreational activities during the coronavirus pandemic

I'm enjoying cooking almost everyday now. Earlier the daily run to work and back left little time/energy to focus on this hobby of mine. Now I make the daily breakfast, work with the cook for lunch/dinner, and prepare the evening snack.
Wife is happy too that she doesn't have to take up kitchen responsibilities and gets to spend time with me.

Given that working from home brings in extra work from the office always, there's little time to do more.
Will be working from the service station some time this week where I'll get vehicle's second service done.

Thinking of deep cleaning both my cars and waxing by myself.

Re: Safe recreational activities during the coronavirus pandemic

I'm not in IT/BT sector. So, no work from home for me. As I ride through Bangalore streets to work and back, I observe lot less traffic in the past 4-5 days.
So I'm beginning to think this may be the perfect time to start teaching -
1. Wife to ride geared bike and driving MT car
2. Daughter to ride bicycle

Re: Safe recreational activities during the coronavirus pandemic

Now one can:
1. Go to long drive to some offbeat place in own vehicle with food taken from home.
2. ENJOY SOME QUALITY FAMILY TIME which is rare these days for a good percentage of people.
