Need help shifting to Bangalore

Hey Bangy guys.
I'm contemplating shifting to Bangalore. Have been born and brought up in Mumbai. Reason for shifting = Better tuners, track days etc . I'm into advertising here. Can easily take a transfer to my Bangy branch. Will be moving with wifey (even her reaseon is the same = better tuners, track days). Just wanted a few infos from you guys.

1) How safe is the city?

2) For around 9k, will I get a decent 1BHK apartment in an upmarket locality?

3) How is the traffic situation? Better or worse than Mumbai?

4) How are the people? Are they helpful?

5) What about traffic cops? Can you bribe them (it's quite important )

6) Quality of life (night life, hangouts etc.)

Guys please lemme know and feel free to add anything else you want me to know.

1. Safety, depends on where you are and how you act. Ring roads late at night can be dangerous. Flashing mobiles, laptops and leaving them unattended even in areas like Koramangala can involve broken windows/windscreens. If you are one of the aware types you should be ok.

2. A 1BHK with a car park? Tough to get. 2BHK with car park costs anywhere from 8K to 15K depending on locality.

3. Traffic is bad normally. Its worse if there's a light shower. Mumbai is too big a city to compare with Bangalore in terms of traffic. You will be stuck in a jam if you travel anytime between 9 am to 10 am and 6 pm to 8 pm. Problem is switched off signals and BPO cabs causing unnecessary problems.

4. People are helpful. Knowing Hindi is a big plus as most of autowallahs/shop guys speak Hindi.

5. I find Bangalore cops to be more softspoken and better than TN/Kerala. Regards to bribes the are all the same.

6. Quality of life? Pollution, pollen, patched up roads, breakneck driving, excellent restaurants, good looking females, nice malls, Multiplexes are all there. But if you are from Bombay you've seen them all already.

Have a budget of up to 9-10k per month. Won't it be enough for a decent 1 BHK in an upmarket area like MG road or brigade road?

There are plenty of to do things if you have the money and if you want a night life. So come down, and you will not repent the decision.

Adman, my response below:

1) How safe is the city?
ANS--> Not very different from Mum. However, there have been few instances off-late when IT guys came under attack from criminal elements.

2) For around 9k, will I get a decent 1BHK apartment in an upmarket locality?
ANS--> Blr does not have 1 BHK concept unlike Mum. Its mostly 2/3BHK. You should be able to get a 2 BHK anywhere between 10 - 15K, the differentiators being area etc. Brigade rd, MG rd etc are not residential areas (though some Army flats are around there). You need to look at Koramangala, BTM, Cox town etc.

3) How is the traffic situation? Better or worse than Mumbai?
ANS--> Its bad. In Mumbai you see moving traffic. In Blr, it could stand still for an hr. Its especially bad during peak office hrs.

4) How are the people? Are they helpful?
ANS--> Not different from Mumbai. Its friendly. Knowing hindi / english helps. Not really stuck up on regional language

5) What about traffic cops? Can you bribe them (it's quite important )
ANS--> Not sure how this is a criteria to decide your move to Blr. In any case, you wont be disappointed.

6) Quality of life (night life, hangouts etc.)
ANS--> Good. All you need is a deep pocket.

adman you dont have to stay in upmarket area's to get to work.

MG Road Brigade area for 9k ? You must be kidding. Honestly I wouldnt stay here I was given a choice.
Reasons being the chaos and traffic you encounter here.

Move a few kms from the city and you have umpteen number of options and for 9k you should be able to get a decent 2BHK house.

Err, I don't think that is a complete address, but going by the pin code, it must be an address in the MG rd. area.

residences in and around this area are exhorbitant if available.

U could stay in any of the surrounding areas like
Koramangala (expensive) approx 10kms from MG rd.
Indiranagar (expensive) same dist.
Jayanagar (slightly better) 12-15kms
RT nagar (reasonable) 8-9 kms
Palace orchards (expensive) 6-8 kms
Malleswaram (reasonable) 6-8 kms
Ulsoor (expensive/reasonable) 2-4 kms

these are some options AFAIK, guys pls add or correct.
All distances are approx from MG rd area.

I wouldn't say Bangy is very safe... at least at night and more specifically for women. Try not to stay out too late unless you are in a group. Gang of muggers generally target loners and couples, mug them of their belongings, cash, jewellery, vehicle, cell phone et all. And off late, they even take the poor victim to an ATM at knife point and ask you to withdraw the maximum amount possible. Much more dangerous for a woman as it wont stop at mugging alone.

I am not scaring you, but this is what my dear city is turning into. Other than that its a nice place to stay. The people are very friendly and nice. Not hostile at all. They will help you, or at least try to, no matter what language you converse in. The nightlife is very short (ends at 11pm) although private parties at farm's do operate till dawn. Drunken driving can land u in trouble as cops are pretty strict. Not that bribing doesnt work, its just that they have a monthly target - number of cases booked and revenue generated. The pubs are the best in the country and so is the beer. Also look forward to some nice sweet rides patrolling the streets at night.

I wish u all the best. Do keep us posted when u come down. Will be gald to meet up with u.

P.S. Luke, that was a nice description of the area with the cost association.

I guess its the main SBI branch with gates on St. Marks Road & Museum Road.
You will find plenty of options within 5Km of this area. How about checking on any property site such as Real Estate India,Property in India,No.1 Real Estate Site - 99acres.com Search for properties around Bangalore Center.

If your office is around the MG.Road area trying hunting for a house/apartment in Malleshwaram, RT.Nagar, Jaymahal. You will get them in your budget and they are less than 10kms from your office. Roads are excellent too. Just pray that you don't get stuck in a traffic jam. Though the jams are not as bad as in Bombay.

There's no night life here. Unless you count Empire.

Restaurants take last orders at around 10.30, 11pm. Clubs shut early.
In Bombay we leave home by about 10.30 for a club night. So by those standards, this is evening life.

The upside to this is, by 9, most clubs are busy, believe it or not.
