I did not apply for the IPO.

I personally think the stock is overpriced. I didn't apply and don't intend to buy as well, atleast at present levels.

Hope market movements subsequent to your post teach you something - and hope it is not "avoid". A high degree of risk is always there, plus these intra day swings. Personally, I prefer to wait and watch till we reach some level of sanity is reached.

With 3 - 5 months of slow downs, unemployment, leaves and medical expenses for a large population, buying power, trade, and loan repayments, etc will be hit. So, things are a bit dicey.

If things were happening just due to a cyclical slow down, I'd have lapped up equities. Not now.

Buy Vedanta with your eyes closed. It is at a very important pattern of bottoming out.
I will suggest to buy in staggered manner.

Do you play the stock market

With some discussions on banning short-selling (some European markets have already done this), is this worth considering for Indian markets? Is there any benefit?

What about going long? Should that be banned when markets are rising too much prevent it from rising too much?

There are circuit breakers on either side. But i guess, desperate times call for desperate measures? I am not suggesting they ban it. I just wanted to hear views on why certain markets have done this (may be reduce volatility)?

When the economy was down, but market still kept going up, that would also be considered desperate times by the bears.

Probably because of lobbying by rich, influential people who are long.

Thank you for your knowledgeable words. I can see that it is a time of wait and watch.

What would you suggest that first timers like me do to learn and perhaps prepare ourselves to invest when the time is right?

You could start investing when the Team-BHP Coronavirus thread (The Coronavirus Thread) is no longer active.

Meaning, as long as Coronavirus takes up mind share of investors, stocks will continue to be weak. Most newbies will not be able to stomach 30%+ falls.

INFY is already offering 4% dividend yield while ITC will soon offer 5% div yield (since they announced higher dividend payouts).

You sir, are ahead of ICICIDirect !!
I Just received a mailer from ICICIDirect with ITC as a stock recommendation with the following rationale "Company Update - ITC
ITC has declared its dividend policy, increasing its pay out to 80-85% of earnings. Moreover, it is expected to pay out a special dividend along with its fourth quarter results. The company is holding cash & investments of 16000 crore as on September 2020. We believe the company could pay 50% of its cash & investments as special dividend, which translates to dividend per share of 6 /share. This, along with the 80% pay out, is expected to result in dividend of 16/share and a dividend yield of 10%. Even without this, special dividend yield is at 7%. Currently, the stock is trading at 10x FY22E earnings
"

Well infy might see adverse impact because of corona and dividends may come down.

But companies like Coal India or Gail or ITC should be solid dividend bets. The former 2 are huge cash generators and govt owned and obviously govt will keep stripping dividends off them to balance its own books. ITC also is a solid player. Its cigarette division generates tons of free cash which it will keep distributing as notified.

Basically for dividend we have to look for businesses that generate lot of free cash with no ability to deploy it back for meaningful growth. One such interesting auto player is PTL Enterprises. It's owned by Apollo tyres and it just leases a facility to them for rent. So there is annual fixed income without any expenses! Most of this income it distributes as dividend. Whatever is left is used to buy shares, MFs etc. I think the dividend yield was somewhere around 6-7% before this carnage in the market. It's a debt free company and interestingly the market value of the land itself is more than double the market cap of the company!!!

What's the worst case scenario? Let's assume that INFY/TCS is unable to make "new sales" for atleast a year (because Covid-19 is raging across Europe and US). What could the revenue impact on Infy be?

In other words, in a typical IT company, what percentage of revenues come from legacy projects and what percentage comes from new projects, in a year?
