No. A physical examination is a must. One can't diagnose you only on symptoms.

And anyways, ENT is out of my league. Sorry.

Do you regularly use ear phones or blue tooth for that matter.?

It could be because of wax build up or an ear infection.

Visit an ENT without any further delay.

These days am feeling tightening up of the muscles beneath my left chin n behind the neck. So visited a ENT physician y'day and she prescribed me an antibiotic (Clindamycin 300MG) to be taken like 4 per day for 10 days. And also, she wants me to undergo a CT scan for the same. Could physicians/others here share their opinion what this might be, and also does this absolutely require a CT scan to diagnose? Please advise.

They are suspecting stones in the glands. Does this require a CT scan to diagnose? And also, for salivary stones are there any non-invasive procedures?

X-ray can be used but CT is the preferred method. Around 30% of stones in parotid gland are radiolucent. They wont show up in X-ray. A CT scan is more sensitive in detecting stones as compared to X-ray, hence advised.

As the stone is in Parotid gland, an invasive procedure may have to be done.
If the stone is small enough, prescribing sialagogues will push it out but if its big, then an invasive procedure is the only option.

Thank You. What is with this radiation exposure due to CT scan? Can an ultrasound scan help? I have heard/read of some uneasiness/adverse reaction due to intake of contrast material for CT scan.

Yes. An ultrasound can very well help. It can detect the stones efficiently.
The adverse effects are generally short-lived but make sure you are not allergic to contrast media.
Regarding the exposure to radiations, its definitely higher than normal X-ray. However, you are not going to expose yourself to these radiations every now and then. You shall be well within the maximum exposure limit.

re: Calling doctors/dentists/specialists on Team-BHP to provide free consultations

Hi friends,

Need an advice here. My brother had an accident which has resulted in comminuted displaced fractures in his left scapula. One of the fragments though not completely disjointed, has been slightly displaced. Doctors have done preliminary tests to make sure that the broken fragments has not injured the lung. The lung has been found clear. They are not going for surgery and have decided to let it heal by itself. My question is what about the displacement? How will it correct itself?

Secondly he is now in Pune and I plan to take him back to Delhi with me as soon as he s discharged from the hospital. Any precaution for air travel? Moreover Delhi is cold this time of the year. Can the cold affect the healing process? I plan to keep the room heated.

Thanks in advance.

scapular fractures are a pain to heal..its due the thin nature of the bone and the fact that the supra infra scapular muscles have very firm attachments which prevent it from a perfect fusion. the best course of therapy is to completely immobilise the arm with a sling that is also strapped to the chest to prevent any lateral displacement. i am speaking from my experience as a radiologist.
regarding travel you should consult an orthopedic. and preferably take advice in person

though i see no reason why he shouldn't travel. cold wouldn't affect healing much but the cold causes skin and muscles to contract and dry up and that leads to pain.
regarding risk of lung puncture it is minuscule because of the strong muscle attachments.
do get his shoulder joint (rotator cuff ) checked properly especially if impact was from the side (i:e falling on shoulder) rotator cuff tears tend to manifest much later as they are painless and not visible on an xray.
nothing will help him as much immobilization of the joint will.

I was actually getting worried when this did not subside for almost 30 minutes.

While talking with a friend, I look outside the window. Everything appeared normal.
I look back on my phone and the issue was gone.

What the hell happened to my eyes.

I am very confused.

I had slept late the previous night after watching a movie on my laptop till around 2 AM. Could this be the cause. Should I get something checked?
Sir,

Dark adaptation is a normal phenomenon, but it usually lasts about 5 minutes. 30 minutes suggests a 'Delayed Dark Adaptation', which can be a first sign of Open Angle Glaucoma (Kala Motia).
If you have a family history of the disease, you're a diabetic, over 40 years old, then please get your eyes examined asap.
Don't mean to scare you. It could also mean Vit A deficiency, but I am sure you eat well. Other possibilities are there too. Just get a work up done.
Sandeep.

Thanks a lot. In my brothers case it is not just the shoulder, but he has fractured three ribs and the spine too. Yeah the shoulder has been immobilized. There is significant reduction in the pain too. The only occasions when it pains are during the process of lying down or getting up from the bed. We landed in Delhi yesterday on the coldest recorded day. But thankfully he is holding up pretty well.

This never recurred. But thanks for the warning. I will get work up done this Saturday without fail and update the thread with the results.

Thanks once again.

Could my habit of reading (novels, books etc) on my smart phone (3.5" screen) be harmful to my eyes?
