Often hyperthyroidism is a cause of insomnia. It is generally accompanied by symptoms like weight loss or underweight individual, increased heart rate, palpitations, slight nervousness, perspiration etc. So if you have any such symptoms, hyperthyroidism could be the cause.

I don't think I have a thyroid problem.
I am currently overweight, but mainly because i eat a lot [oily food and carbs] and do little exercise. When i start doing cardio I'll lose weight really fast, getting knee surgery in April so then i can start running [football] again.

I do sweat a lot though, but i think that is because of the generous padding that i have all over.

Don't know about an increased heart rate and i'm generally very calm and lethargic

Yes doesn't seem to be a thyroid problem. But since you are going in for surgery in april, they will do the tests anyway.

On a lighter note, your medical history is perfect for orthopaedics exam case viva

I have a query regarding Blood Pressure . From last 12-15 days my wife is complaining about having headache , feeling lightheaded and dizzy .

I started taking her BP 3 times a day and it will always in range of 93/63 to 107/72 with pulse rate ranging from 70-95 .
I was reading on different sites that it should not be a problem till the time you have symptoms , She tried increasing her water and salt intake but no help.
Any suggestions ? What can be the reason and any possible remedies?
I agree this is difficult without a proper history and examination.certain investigatons might be needed too depending on d clinical findings.starting from s.cortisol.first questions would be..her age?, any relation to her periods? any thyroid or other
endocrine probs?; any other symptoms apart from dizziness?
For now keep the fluid intake up and take rest.
try checking BP in different postures.lying down and then standing.

Any skin doctors here?

My sister (cousin) in her early forties has started getting dark patches on her face (cheeks and forehead). It sort of looks like this - http://blog.pharmacymix.com/wp-conte...11/melasma.jpg but not as dark.

She had visited her doctor for some other ailment & at that time asked the doctor to take a look at this. The doctor wasn't much interested & asked her to use a cream called Melalite (Hydroquinone, Oxybenzone, Octinoxate). She used a full tube of this but it had no effect.

Then based on what a friend recommended, she tried another cream called Melamet (Hydroquinone, Tretinoin and Mometasone). This was like magic and within a week or so the dark patches disappeared. However, when she stopped using it (after a 15 g tube was over), the patches started coming back slowly. So she has started it again.

So what is the solution for this - does she has to use this cream for a lifetime or are there any other alternatives. Are these creams safe for longtime use?

Also, she doesn't have any pain or any other issues in the dark area. Just that it looks really bad.

Is anyone using the Omron HEM 4030 BP meter ? I am looking for a slim one, and found this to be handy. It is manual, but I'm ok with that.

(My old Omron is still working fine, but wanted another one)

How are Morepen units ?

Hello,

Would request someone to please help me understand what exactly I am suffering from.

About last Wednesday late night I developed cold and slight cough. This was followed by fever (99-100) on Thursday. I went to the family doctor and he prescribed Ceftas 200 (2 times a day)along with cough syrup(3 times a day) and calpol when needed for 5 days.

On Saturday post breakfast and 45 minutes post medicine I vomitted. However it was only once and I completed the course of the antibiotic with no fever and a lighter nose but cold symptoms still there.

After finishing my course 3-4 days back my cold still remains along with cough and as of today evening my fever is back. Can someone please tell me if this could be something else apart from the flu or have I managed to catch it again?

I know of an inverse problem - white patches. The allopathic treatment I have observed, solves the problem quickly but temporarily. Homeo seems to work better. I know a good homeo doctor in Hyderabad who has helped in white patches problem. If you are interested, PM me. I am not an expert - my opinions and views is what I shared above

re: Calling doctors/dentists/specialists on Team-BHP to provide free consultations

There is someone in the family (female) , 26 years of age , having a peculiar problem. Her ankles swell up every evening and start paining by the time its night. The nearby doc prescribed painkillers for a few days , but that didnt help much. Then he adviced all sorts of tests (Blood/Sugar/Urine/Thyroid etc) , but all of them were perfectly normal.
What could it be ? This is going on for about a month and half now. Should we be consulting an orthopedic doctor ? In that case, why is it happening only in the evenings ?
She has sufficient water intake (~3L+ everyday) and a desk job.

Ohh, so you think it could be due to a blocked/choked artery or something ?
Man, I am worried now.

EDIT : Her BP was in the normal range too.

My wife was having severe stomach pain from yesterday morning. Visited Columbia Asia today- and from initial analysis- doctor has informed it should be appendicitis.

Right now, we're getting an ultrasound scan done, to confirm it.

Suppose the results confirm it, should we explore the option of anti-biotics? Given its the first occurrence? I've heard a lot of cases where operation had to be done.

I am not a surgeon but off late the trend has shifted to conservative management with antibiotics and once the inflammation settles down then you can get it operated electively at a later date.
