What a lovely piece!. Looks like I missed my chance : (

So perhaps you might be the best person to ask as you own both. I made a visit recently to check out the Oyster Perpetual in person, and they happened to have a domed Datejust 36mm that I tried on side by side.

I always had my mind set on a Datejust with the Fluted bezel and Jubilee bracelet, but I came away smitten with the domed variant that day.
As you own both could you tell me if between the two is there one you prefer one over the other? and If so, why?

Watches are so personalized and hence most watch manufacturers allow you to configure them to your preferences,. Most people prefer to fit it with their work/personal life and then now there's absurd amount of wait list or availability issues. But if you can get your hands on a Jubilee with Fluted bezel, then go for it. It is very exclusive and a beautiful watch. The fluted bezels are made of white gold so there's a lot of opulence to it. It's the best Datejust you can buy imo. It will remind of your good time. As you grow older, you will only admire it more.

I will personally prefer fluted bezels for how nicely it reflects light and over all quality is to marvel over. One caveat is it can take scratches easily which only adds to the character. But between the two you mentioned, the Datejust will be a nice pick over Oyster Perpetual, they're really classics. Domed Datejust was my everyday watch while fluted is always seen on a occasion.

Just like a car, any watch that you can wear everyday and turn your head to admire is a great watch :

Sorry I should have added more info to my post. I intend to daily this watch, so mainly work, meetings etc. with office wear.
So If I go by your personal usage pattern where the fluted piece is seen 'on occasion', perhaps the OP is the way to go then for me.

Re: Which watch do you own?

This watch thread only reminds me of my dad's watch, it was an omega speedmaster and I had broken it's clasp thing and he had given it to a local watch repairing shop to replace the clasp thing but unfortunately COVID hit and the shop closed down and it's owner took that watch with him.
I was devastated because of this incident as I had been nagging my dad to give me that watch but oh well whatever is written will happen.
Pic added for reference.

If this happened to my Omega, I would have showed up at the shop owner's door. Sadly no Omega

Re: Which watch do you own?

What is the general opinion about Boderry Voyager? I don't have a field watch in my 'value for money' collection and this seems to fit the bill. Titanium case, Seiko NH35 movement, sapphire crystal, specs are good for an 8900 rupee watch. Does any BHPian have this in their collection, if so please share your opinion.

I come across this fancy watch on Amazon. Called as wheel series from SKMEI. I like the design. The wheel rotates while the caliper is stationary. Looks cool.Which watch do you own?-watchskmei.jpg

Finally got my wife into G-Shocks too.

She wanted a nondescript but high quality watch, that was reliable and could withstand a lot of abuse. This was for wearing in her office premises (she's in a factory setup). I was like: Say no more, we're getting you a solar-powered G-Shock.

That's a DW-5600UE to match my GW-9400.

For me, Datejust feels right only with the fluted bezel!

Finally got my hands on the much loved Orient Bambino.

This one has a blue dial with slightly rose goldish hands and indices. Sits big with the case size at 41mm but fits just fine on my massive wrist!

Reference number: RA-AC0P02L

Would have liked an open case back but iirc, that is only available on a smaller case size.

and here it is with my Seiko 5 for a size comparison.

Well I wasn't silly about it and put on both at the same time.
Not too difficult to put one on don't clasp it move it behind with some distance as you put on the next one

Historically my leaning as well, till I saw the DJ with domed bezel and Jubilee.

Re: Which watch do you own?

Grand Seiko is truly aspirational.

I would some day like to own their Ultimate Quartz with that inimitable and near-perfect Zaratsu Polishing.

And perhaps that gorgeous Automatic in Ever Brilliant Steel.

These are certainly expensive watches by any standard, but I think they would be definitive time-pieces for any Collector because after all, Seiko invented the Quartz movements in 1968 or so and their Automatic Hi Beat movements are super-precise.

I also deeply respect their spring drive movements and the Solar movements of the Seiko Prospex range along with their classical Automatic movements of the Alpinist and the Presage.

Suffice it to say I am a Seiko aficionado.

For now, I shall toodle along now and then to the Grand Seiko Boutique in UB City Bangalore to simply ogle at these lovely watches.

Generally most automatics starting from entry level Seiko 4R36 all the way to more complicated top end movements require a service at least once every 10 years or if they start losing/gaining time beyond their threshold.

My Seiko 5 is 7 years old and time deviation is still between the -30/+40 seconds per day.

No idea how much automatic service costs in India but in Europe, servicing a Seiko 5 is more expensive than buying a new 4R36 movement and swapping your old one

If depends honestly, for automatics! Regarding servicing. I have a 1967 Seiko Bell-Matic, which I think was last serviced maybe mid 80s. It still runs fine, with 30s deviation per day. What damages automatics the most: water, dust, and shock. (well magnetism too). The crown is the weakest point. Swap the back case gasket every 5 years, automatics will last longer. A Seiko 200m diver class will easily last a lifetime. They are just too well made, calibrated, and fitted to purpose.

Re: Which watch do you own?

Guys need your opinion on my first proper watch.
Have been using Apple Watch for the past 6 years and now getting bored of them. Currently on an SS AW Series 7 in Silver. Was planning on getting the ultra the moment it launched in black with the titanium Milanese loop but not seeing any merit in paying 1.15L for a watch that will be outdated in 3-4 years.
The budget I have is ~1.5L. I am very clear on an automatic diver’s on bracelet.

Have looked at a couple options and not able to decide.

Option 1
Longines Hydroconquest
Which watch do you own?-img_5820.jpeg

Option 2
RADO Captain Cook
Which watch do you own?-img_5822.jpeg

Option 3
Seiko Prospex GMT “Dark Depths”
Which watch do you own?-img_5824.jpeg

Out of the above 3, like the Seiko the most, but cannot mentally bring myself to spend this kind of money on a Seiko. I understand that a watch is a personal choice and one should get what they like the most, but, still not very convinced on Seiko as a brand.

Would love to get an opinion.

About three weeks ago I got my (grandfather's) 1965 Favre-Leuba "Sea Chief" hand wind model serviced at P.Orr & Sons in Chennai. It required a winding stem replacement. Paid 2.6k including the spare and service. Gains about 20 seconds a day now. They kept the watch for nearly a couple of months to source the winding stem.

Inexpensive automatics may cost 1 - 1.5k more for service.
