Omega indeed stands seemingly hard locked at 8% for a while now. If you happen chance are in Dubai or have friends and family traveling through and you have a precise model in mind, Dubai airport pricing (not city) may make more sense, since it cuts back local taxes too. The watch store near Concourse B is well stocked as I was just there yesterday. Great range of brands as well as models. I did a bit of dip stick test on popular models and pricing was a tad cheaper than Ethos etc even post their typical discounts.

Re: Which watch do you own?

The watch I’m wearing right now is also the watch that I adore.
SEIKO 5 Sport reference number- SRPD55K1

It is called Seiko 5 because while designing the first Seiko 5 watch in 1961 they wanted it to be a common man’s everyday watch and it had to have 5 qualities which are as follows:
  1. It had to be waterproof
  2. It had to be an automatic watch so that the user would not have to worry about winding it
  3. It had to have a day-date window
  4. It had to be affordable
  5. It had to shockproof

Since then, each Seiko 5 watch carries these qualities. Mine is a modern reincarnation of their ever popular SKX series.

I bought mine in 2020, with my first salary!

Re: Which watch do you own?

I feel once you have a substantial amount of watches, every other addition should come with a reason. Generally to celebrate an occasion or maybe once you hit a mile stone?

Why so?

Simply because watches stick around for quite sometime, a good watch if taken care of can outlast your phone, car and sometimes your life too and get passed on to generations after.

This is also a good way to control the urge of keep on buying watches, provided you are logical in terms of celebrating moments.

So i recently hit a milestone in my startup and decided to finally get a watch i was on the sideline for a while.

Here it is:
Which watch do you own?-img_0579.jpg

Casio MTP-1302PD-3AV. Also Dubbed as Casio Datejust. It does look quite similar to that.

Here is a reference picture:
Which watch do you own?-datejust.jpg

Moving aside from the similarity, I find it to be a very attractive watch. Casio does wonders at every price range. This being a Sub 4k watch, the finishing is acceptable, comes with a sunburst dial and all the indices have great finishing on them.

Even though this watch in tiffany blue is incredibly desirable, my heart was stuck on this green one!

Looks lovely under sun and as the light dims, the fluted bezels shimmer. Also the watch hands have lume in it. It is not the best but pretty decent for the price.

This is also now my 4th or 5th Casio watch!

5 Sport watches are known for being insane value for money. I own a SRPG47K1. However, the 5 attributes of the 5 Sports series are:

Automatic movement
Day-date display at the three o’clock position
Water resistance
Recessed crown at the four o’clock position
Case and bracelet built for durability

Thanks, but I prefer to buying a watch because I feel I like it. No other reason required.

I rarely get rational over my hobbies or interests.

Haha, sounds fair. But at this stage in life, if I do not put brakes on my reckless watch buying spree, only thing left to watch would be my drained bank balance.

Re: Which watch do you own?

Hello All,

Please suggest me any type of wrist watch (quartz / automatic / Eco drive etc) which can last some generations. Basically looking for Toyota among watches which is reliable in long run.

The watch you want to buy depends on your requirements, expectations and budget. First you need to decide which type of watch you want. For Example: Formal dress watch, digital sports watch, divers watch, pilot's watch, etc. Any quartz watch from Casio, Seiko, Citizen or Orient will meet your need for reliability. These are all Japanese brands. Stay away from fashion brands like plague. If you are a beginner then I would suggest looking at quartz watches from the above listed brands. Quartz watches are relatively affordable and easy to maintain. These are like Honda; Fill it, Shut it, Forget it! If you are looking at something beyond quartz then read on...

Eco-drive watches from Citizen are the benchmark IMO. Although Seiko Solar and Casio Tough Solar can also be considered. Most Eco-Drive watches are powered by a photovoltaic solar panel. They are maintenance free for up to 10 years or more (does not need battery change). After 10 years or so the battery starts losing its charge. This is when you will need to take it to the authorized service centre for a battery change. Remember, road side unauthorized shops cannot carry out battery change in an Eco-drive watch due to lack of genuine spares and expertise. These are like EV's, as long as the battery is juiced it will keep going without missing a heartbeat. Kinetic watches were also in vogue sometime back but have lost appeal off lately. They provide a fantastic balance of electro-mechanical movement. These are like hybrid cars offering the best of electric as well as mechanical power.

Automatic watches are the cream of wrist watches. They range from simple mechanical hand wound (HMT) to expensive automatic mechanical, tourbillon, etc. These watches require regular upkeep in terms of wearing/using them regularly on a day to day basis. If you leave them in a drawer for 2 days or more (some expensive mechanical watches can have a power reserve of up to 5 days or more) it will stop working. The next time you wear it you will need to adjust the correct time as well as day and date (the latter in day and date mechanical watches). Mechanical watches can be compared to old RE Cast Iron Bullet Standard 350. Barring HMT mechanical watches most of the mechanical automatic watches from Seiko, Citizen and Orient will cost more compared to quartz and eco-drive watches.

Let us know what you decide.

P.S. Irrespective of the brand or movement type I am recommending Casio, Seiko, Citizen and Orient as these brands use their own in-house movement.

Casio Edifice solar powered Chronograph watch with metal strap. Has a scratch proof Sapphire Crystal glass. Makes it a stylish companion for daily wear that goes with casual and formal wear.
You will need to bump the day on the 1st of the month but not to worry of am/pm, that it remembers.

Re: Which watch do you own?

My father passed on his Seiko 5 watch to me couple of years ago at my insistence . It has been in working condition for the past 42+ years and counting without skipping a beat! It certainly has fair share of battle scars and the glass was replaced (my father got it done in my hometown which happens to be a rather small town) and the workmanship at best can be termed as shabby.

One of the unique features of the watch is that the language for the day can be set to Arabic

Yuri Gagarin is a hero of mine, and also am a fan of USSR design and art. This watch is a replica of the original automatic Sturmanskie that Gagarin wore on his pioneering first flight to space, with a new back engraved with the great man's likeness.

Re: Which watch do you own?

I don't know how I missed this thread being a watch enthusiast!

Nonetheless, was always into watches since my childhood. Used to have "business deals" with my parents where I provide them with good grades and they provide me with the watch I need ( obviously in a strict budget ) in exchange. I assume we all have done these kind of business deals in our childhood

Have a good collection of certain Titan & Timex watches along with a Fossil ( I know it's a fashion brand for the enthusiasts but well, didn't have much knowledge back then )

As I went to college, got myself two versatile watches as a gift using the scholarship amount I had received during the course of my study.
  1. The GOAT - Casio A158WA-1Q

    Which watch do you own?-1image.jpg

  2. The Budget Pandas - Timex TWEG184SMU13

    Which watch do you own?-images-10.jpeg

After this, the goal was to get an entry level luxury watch ( according to Indian standards ). Always had the eye on Seiko SSK003K1 - the famous Blueberry GMT but budget was insufficient. Was saving since college and finally landed a good internship which helped me not only fulfill this dream of mine but also another big dream - to gift my father a beautiful dress watch! Here are both the beauties:
  1. Seiko SSK003K1 - Blueberry GMT for myself

  2. Seiko Presage SSA347J1 for Dad

    Which watch do you own?-img_20240712_121134.jpg

Now the goal after these is to get a good dress watch for myself in the coming couple of years ( eyeing on the beautiful Tissot Le Locle ).

And the ultimate final boss goal is the Omega "Speedy" Speedmaster in the coming decade.

The luxury feel alone may be better for the moonphase due to the presence of a better complication. Ranger is designed as a tool watch so will be good for a while.
