Last year I spent around 3000-4000 just to get batteries replaced & the usual upkeep but as of now most of them have stopped working again, I suspect batteries have drained surprisingly fast.

I got them replaced from Titan. Watches are of various make - Fossil, Casio, Diesel etc.
That's why most people who collect buy Automatic watches over Quartz battery. I have only Quartz solar or Automatic watches now in my collection so no batteries ever needed.

Thanks brother. The demand attributes to ISO 6425 certification on an affordable watch. Thinking to switch to 007 black from the 009 Pepsi.
Might switch if I find a clean piece.
Also looking if any of my friends are selling their Ghostly Spinnaker. Might switch then also.

That's a lovely question brother. Basically we enthusiasts do consider watches as machines and it being an automatic one, studying what the machine is like, the parts and the way the needle moves is a big deal. The complication it brings is the beauty, missing in a simple quartz.

Moreover you'll see good automatic movement watches hold value. I bought the SKX used at its actual retail price. The time being adjusted, the way it winds makes us feel a lot connected with it.

Re: Which watch do you own?

While on the topic of watches, those wanting to get one might as well get it soon for premium watches will soon attract a sin tax and be charged at the GST slab of 28%!

I got a message of this kind from Ethos Watches.
Is it true that the GST slab is changing?
How can they change it in the middle of the year? Don’t they need to do this at the time of the ‘budget’?
Or is just one of those rumours?

Re: Which watch do you own?

GST rates are set by the GST Council, comprising of a group of State Finance Ministers and the Union Finance Minister amongst others. The Council meets periodically and debates/decides upon various proposals as GST is still an evolving tax mechanism.

In the latest meeting, they have apparently decided upon increasing taxes on premium watches and pens amongst others, while also decreasing rates on health insurance upto a certain slab. The final notifications are likely to come in the next council meet.

Re: Which watch do you own?

Ya I got a similar message from Ethos today. Bummer.

Dear Sir/Madam,

I hope you’re doing well. I wanted to share some important news with you. As you may have read, the GST on luxury items like watches is set to increase from 18% to 28%. Additionally, due to changes in foreign exchange rates and annual price adjustments, we expect watch prices to rise by an average of 15% soon.

If you’ve been considering investing in a timepiece, this might be a great opportunity to do so before these changes take effect. Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions or need any assistance.

Warm Regards,
*****

Congratulations on your watch. In the same boat. Cocktail series watches are insane but the date window spoiling the symmetry was my major concern and kept me off from acquiring one.

There might be an automotive parallel as well
I feel an ICE guy might never shift to an EV and an EV guy might never get the appeal of an ICE.

I guess its the same for quartz and an automatic. The convenience, cost benefit and overall ease of ownership beats the Automatic, but the appeal of an actual mechanical which has an Rotor, balancewheel, escapement is pure joy

At the end, to each his own.

Best,

Best,
I partially agree on that part. I own both ICE and EV and prefer the EV for daily runs. On the basis of how they feel yes the gear shifts and Exhaust does make a joy if it delivers the same perfomance of the EV, but usually at thrice the price. Same with Quartz vs Automatic.

Cheers bro

Hi, I had the same problem, last year got the batteries replaced and now when the watches are not being used, I simply pull the crown store them in a case. When, I need it just adjust the time and push the crown, it's good to go. This method can't be used if it's a digital watch, luckily most of the Casio watches(digital) have a 10yrs a battery life.

Re: Which watch do you own?

I love watches, doesnt matter if they are cheap or expensive.
I look at them as a piece of art/ a design element/ borderline jewellery.

Functionally there is no need for a watch, there are many things that tell them time, but a few that do it as beautifully as a watch (not a smart watch) .

I own a few watches .
- Seiko 5 (Retro) - Blue Rainway
- Seiko 5 Sports (Retro)
- Seiko Chrono (2 colors)
- Seiko Presage (Maroon colorway)
- Tissot - T-Touch
- Tissot Classic
- Tissot Seamaster (the one that I have worn today)
- Casio GShock (rectangle dial) - GM5600
- Casio 91W

My 2015 Citizen Eco-Drive has stopped retaining the charge and needs a replacement. It was my primary watch over these years. That's a significant cost as compared to the (multiple) battery replacements of a similar Quartz model over the same period.

Can we do this to automatic models too? I was under the impression that the automatic and/or solar models need to be used on a regular basis; too long into storage is not considered good for these models. (can't recollect where I got this info so open to suggestions).

I know but the thing is Quartz is every 2 years or so and Solar is at least 7-8 years if charged and not depleted.

Automatics have lubrication that will dry up if not used for very long. It's always better to keep them running every few weeks so they don't jam up long term. Else they can last lifelong.
