re: Which watch do you own?

Any users of Casio G shock g mix or GA 400 9B ? As you might now, Hour and minute hand shift moves the hands for easy viewing of display info when you press the light and mode button together.

The thing is when you press it again to bring it back to it's original position, does the return movement of the minute hand stutter? I don't know if it's the same in all watches or only in mine.

Also, anyone bought a watch from amazon and claimed warranty to replace it? Does Casio accept the warranty card without the dealer stamp? (Note : I have the invoice number)

Any experiences regarding the same will be appreciable. Please help!

I saw your reference to me in the previous post so here's my suggestion as well - you're going about it in the right path, given the budget. I understand how you feel about them since I felt the same way as well, to me its an accessory.. and something you refer to for the time once in a while when not using the phone. Here's how I'd get to it - eliminate the last 3 of the shortlist instantly. Tissot will earn my vote as the obvious choice given the budget (its incredibly reliable & is the only great brand out there for the sub-30k range). One slight modification however and now I'll go into details :

The watch you posted is a chronograph, the most complex, yet useless function in a watch ever. Of course unless you love to time things and record the exact minutes or hours taken during a day, in which case the T-Trend will be useful. Be warned though that using chronograph will sap the battery by a lot. My recommendation will be a T-Classic Annual Calendar, its the only Tissot that caught my eye (no I don't own it) and a watch I deem as the best value for money watch EVER, why?

It has the Date, Day, Month and the usual hours minutes and seconds. Many may ask but why do you want to know the obvious details, well many times its useful and an annual calendar watch is a rare feat.. prestige brands price it at well above 20 times the cost of this one. I feel a watch might as well give the most info about time, and day, date and month indication is essentially, time. I'm not sure how the battery life will be but I'd think Tissot will have good service and its an ideal watch to start off with. Its available with a bracelet strap too, for rugged wearability and best part is its well south of your budget (20% less I think).

Another suggestion will be to just buy what you like visually (I'm putting it out there to absolve myself of any potentially bad suggestion) and ignore everything else that anyone said.

Hi dark.knight,

Many thanks for your reply and appreciate your suggestion! The inclusion of the Date, Day, Month is indeed useful and I agree with the chronograph (I think it means the stop watch function?) of not being of much use to me.

Any views on the brand 'Claude Bernard' which was there in my previous post? I am liking its simple and classic designs but it seems as if it is not as well known as Tissot. I quite like the suggestion you gave about T-Classic Annual Calendar. I will try to find it out on Ethos. Any other place where I can buy this version?

I use the same Fossil model but the watch face is dark green. I also own the Skagen model that you have listed, but with a white dial instead of blue. These are good watches for everyday usage.

However, if your budget can be stretched to about INR 30K, I would suggest that you go for the Seiko Sportura series. Seikos are known to be well made, long lasting and with good understated designs, all at palatable prices which are not going to empty your wallet like the higher end brands would. I bought one for my wedding a couple of years back, and love it to bits. Lovely build quality, and classy looking. If you get it from the US like I did, the price would be much lower.

Here is the one I use: http://www.amazon.in/Seiko-Designer-...atches&sr=1-10

Please do check out the Citizen watches range too. They have some good looking models with leather straps, and will easily fit in your budget of 30k.

Cheers,
Vikram

Well I do not know that brand, but with a simple guess I assume that it's another of those "Swiss Made" brands which use their location as the only claim to fame for selling watches. Simple and classic they are, but service wise, or warranty wise I'm not too sure how good they'd be. The watch industry in Switzerland is like clothes industry in India, while both countries are famous for them respectively, the range in quality can be anything from fantastic to downright terrible. Its a gamble with an unknown brand.

Buying a watch can be for 2 reasons, one for the genuine need for knowing time, the other for its provenance, heritage, and just.. as an accessory. The good Swiss brands focus on the latter, just handle the Tissot in person, wear it and if you're wearing formal clothes most of the time see if it can clear the shirt cuff easily or not. The Tissot T-Classic Calendar can, its very slim and quite lightweight and yet has a substantial modern dial of 41 odd mm(I think). Also pay close attention to the watch dial, the guilloche pattern (machine engraving), the play of light on the watch and the visibility, check the folding mechanism which isn't a pin buckle but a twin folding clasp without triggers.. experience it first and then you'd know instantly what's right. Tissot as far as provenance goes, is part of the same group as Breguet & Harry Winston.. the ultra elite watch brands, you may also know that the relatively wider "known" brands of Omega & Longines are in the same family.

Try and buy is always the way to go when it comes to watches.

re: Which watch do you own?

Tissot is a part of the Swatch group, they have a lot of brands
Swatch Group brands
Breguet, Harry Winston, Blancpain, Glashütte Original, Jaquet Droz, Léon Hatot, Omega, Longines, Rado, Union Glashütte, Tissot, Balmain, Certina, Mido, Hamilton, Calvin Klein watches + jewelry, Swatch, Flik Flak.

http://www.swatchgroup.com/en/brands_and_companies

You can go to their site and peruse the details. One good thing about the group is their extensive service network in India, so any repairs can be done at their authorised service centres. They have discount sales regularly, so be on the lookout. If you go to a major reseller, you can negotiate discounts from 10% to 25% depending on the brand model and turnover.

Firstly, I would like to thank all of you for guiding me here! Without your help, making a choice would have been very difficult. I finally took the plunge and bought the Tissot Traditional Perpetual Calendar watch (model no: T063.637.16.037.00)

The MRP of the watch was 24.6k and I got it for 21.6k (close to 12% discount) from the Tissot shop in Borivali, Mumbai! Some pictures below:

Got to say, that is fantastic value for money for what the watch offers. The dial makes for a great conversation piece. I prefer maximum complications possible within the time-piece and this one has all the useful indicators.

The thin bezel is very contemporary as well, beautiful piece and definitely a daily-wearer since it can pull off both formal and casual combinations.

Check this insane master-craftsmanship by Hublot in partnership with Ferrari - LaFerrari.
Every single component oozes finesse. Must admit, never before in my life I have drooled so much for a watch.

re: Which watch do you own?

I have owned a few watches over the past few years. Timex, Fossil, Swatch, IWC Schaffhausen and Raymond Weil. My daily wear these days however is an LG Watch Urbane (W150) in Gold with black leather strap. Very happy with the smart watch.

Good choice, goes very well with formal clothing. Have to say that the very first watch you got is a good conversation starter

Thank you!

Few things on buying watches online versus retail shops:

- I went to two Tissot boutique shops in Mumbai (Lower Parel and Borivali) and both of them advised me not to buy it online. They told me to buy it from Ethos but not from websites like Amazon/Flipkart/Snapdeal

- The manager at the Borivali shop also showed me newspaper advertisements of Tissot where it is mentioned that Tissot does not sell watches Online in India and watches bought from online websites will not be honored for warranty claims.

- In spite of this, I saw that Flipkart had mentioned that the watch is covered by Tissot for warranty for 2 years. The shop people told me not to believe in these statements.

- I was told that few of Tissot watches are very popular in the ‘fake’ market. These watches are called ‘first copy’. Apparently these are quite popular in India as many people here want to show off their brands but do not want to spend a lot on it. These copies are so well made that it is very difficult to judge if it is a genuine piece or a fake. I know that one can get a Patek Phillipe here for 10k (of course a first copy!).

It'll be easier to knock-off a Tissot, yes.. since basically its inserting a random quartz movement and duplicating everything else. As regards high end brands like Patek - it takes a very keen eye and a little knowledge to spot right away that its fake. One look at the crystal is mostly a dead giveaway, true sapphire will have a bluish hue and if its non-reflective then it'll be as if the sapphire isn't there at all, the same effect cannot be replicated on the cheap. Finishing, dial striations, sun-burst patterns etc are simply impossible to replicate. Even picking up the piece will instantly tell whether its fake or not to the right person. Brands like Rolex, Panerai and Omega are relatively easy to rip-off (with genuine ETA movements) since they are of relatively simple designs with no complications to speak of.

BTW how many people know that a Patek Philippe is nowhere close to being the best brand out there? Competing peers like A.Lange Sohne & Vacheron Constantin are arguably better in terms of finishing, complications and value. There are of course the ultra-elite brands which come above that like Richard Mille, Kari Voutilainen, FP Journe, Greubel Forsey, Christophe Claret etc which are purely made-for-order, fully hand assembled watches at unmentionable prices due to exclusivity.

Here's a great piece manufactured from a collaboration of Urwerk Switzerland & Harry Winston U.S :

That's a very classy looking watch. And you also managed to get a tidy discount on it. Doubt any of the malls would have offered any discount. Anyways, below is my Tissot automatic which i wear off & on.
