Re: I wish I never bought that! Premier Padmini purchased in 1993 was the biggest mistake we made. Dad had just returned from an extended overseas stint and I had just got my license and was ready for my first car. It was either that or the M800.
How I wish we'd got the Maruti instead. There was a price difference of about 12K between the two (significant back then) and we'd had a good experience with our earlier Padmini purchased in '86 and sold after 3 years. It was pretty much up to me and I advised Dad to get the Padmini. Nobody to blame but myself
Somehow never warmed to it, though it was the car that I honed my driving skills on. The wheel-mounted gearshift was really hard: we were assured it would soften with age but it never did. One time I pulled into a petrol pump and shifted into neutral and the whole damn gear lever assembly came off in my hands. Luckily there were enough mechanics around to put it together. Also the bench seat made driving very uncomfortable. I had some rich friends in college who drove around in Toyotas and 118NEs and that only served to make me hate it more . After I started working, I used to drive my BIL's M800 (what a suh-weeet car!) and the poor Padmini was more or less relegated to the garage. I had it transported to Hyderabad where I was based for a while and drove it to the office but by the turn of the millennium the car was an anachronism since shiny new models were making an appearance every day. I was working in consumer goods sales back then and one day my Hubli distributor offered to take it off my hands for 25K. Called Dad who gladly agreed and used the proceeds to finance some much needed furniture for home instead!
After that I have owned an Accent, a Swift and a Vento and never regretted any of those purchases. Better to do one's homework up front rather than regret it later! |
