I agree, Diana lost the Gadbad plot a long time back. I was a Diana fanatic since 1975.

There is a restaurant with an Italian sounding name in the lane behind the manipal.edu building. His food is superb.

That would be "Basil". Nice combo meals here.
@ Yogi1771-Jackie is running this place now.
@ Samurai - Blue waters is open from about 11 am. You can go there with family in the afternoon. Sunday afternoons are quiet.

Boo hoo.. Reminds me of my engineering days at MIT Manipal (1999 - 2003. Any batchmates here in t-bhp? ).
When I was low on cash, I would eat at Your Choice, Manipal Canteen, BQC, BQ Mess, Seif Palace...
When I had little more budget, I'd visit Dollops (Roosta's Area), Tasty Bites, Lake View, Cosmos...
When I had a lot of money, Pisces or Kidiyoor in Udupi.

In Mangalore, I like to eat at (other than home) Madhuvan (Yeyyadi), Gajalee (Circuit House) or Dolphin (Kadri Shivabagh).

I heard that there is a place called Sizzlers Ranch in Ballalbagh where you get really good American Food. Has anyone tried this place?

For ice creams, Pabbas or Ideal's.

My take on Mangalore, Udupi hotels,

1) Woodlands, Mangalore - Golibaje and Rasam vada are best in the world! Other items are equally good as well.

2) Curry leaf at Deepa comforts, Mangalore - Fantastic tasty vegetarian food. Reasonably priced as well. You can see super cars like Q7, S350, BMW 7 series quite often.

3) Juice junction in Balmatta - Fresh lime juice is just awesome in mangalore weather. Snacks are OK as well.

4) Pabba's Ice cream - Best in Mangalore. Comparable to Boomerang @ Coimbatore.

5) Small hotel near udupi krishna math - Best malasa dosa and badam milk in entire south kanara. I forgot the name, but it is exactly opposite to car street. very small and tasty!

Now that you are not a student on shoe-string budget anymore, you will find it hard to eat in such places.

Some places and specialties that I am aware of in Mangalore:

BaLLi's - a small bhajji joint near Temple Square, Car street. Various deep fried items prepared in fresh oil everyday. Open from 3 PM till stocks last - which is typically till 6 PM.
Cellar, Hampankatta (opposite Alukkas) - famous for Chicken Ghee Roast
Bombay lucky, Near Bunder police station - for Biryani and fried chicken lovers. Not a family place
Winegate, Balmatta - Good crab ghee roast and other fish items. Again a takeaway kind of place
Suvarna, Mannagudda - excellent Bangude puLimunchi
Aroma, Deepa Comforts - Squid pepper fry, Pompret tawa fry
Gajalee, Kadri Hills - Tandoori crab. You can choose the victim
