So my 12 year old dual side pillowtop springwel mattress ( BAsically you can flip it vertically and horizontally) has been showing signs of aging and has developed a indent where I sleep. When I first bought it I just spent 30 mins at a local mattress shop and bought it cause it just seemed comfortable and just above the price range I had planned.
Fast forward 12 years, I'm 40 and my back is not as ignorant of my mattress decisions and has been asking for an upgrade and not just an upgrade it wants to go shop in the luxury segment. And so I have been looking at the best brands my money can buy - Sertas, sealys, Kingcoils, pep etc and also been researching like crazy about the composition i want - memory foam, hybrid, spring, latex etc.
So here are some take aways:
I'm 40 year old, six feet and weigh 87 Kgs ( so on the heavier side)and a side sleeper. I was looking for a medium firm to firm mattress based on my research that they provide the best support and comfort. Also heavier people should go for this range as they sink in deeper and with a soft mattress this feeling tends to get exaggerated.
- only foam or memory foam mattress were not appealing to me as I didn't like the feel of sinking in. I like sleeping on top of my mattresses and not inside them. Moreover, they felt weird when turning over as the mattress has no give back. Also I've never used one before consistently so it just felt weird. Another factory was that a website while I was researching gave them a low score for love making since they are not at all bouncy.
- Basic spring ( Bonnel) mattresses were too springy for me. Didn't provide enough support. Also they don't offer adequate 0 partner disturbance.
- Pocket Spring/Hybrid felt more like the space i wanted to be in. So basically these are the mattresses with Pocket springs ( individual springs and not linked springs) at the bottom with a comfort layers on top.
I tried a bunch of mattresses with various hybrid configurations and these are the ones I finalized:
1. King Koil Maharaja Grand: Pocket Spring with resilience foam. Priced around 50K. Felt nice but a bit too springy. Felt great if it was priced at 30K but 50K felt expensive for the quality. Also the top material didn't feel luxe.
2. Serta Perfect Sleeper: this mattress I almost finalized but since I didn't have my wife with me that day. I told the shopkeeper I'll come back and finalize with my wife. But that day I came back thinking that's the winner. It wasn't pocket spring was some serta posture springs ( basically sounded like a fancy way of saying bonnel) and had 4 layers of different types of foam. Felt like the right match for my back. Not too firm. And not too soft. They were priced at 60K. The way I justified it was If the mattress lasts me 10 years I'm basically only paying 6000 bucks a year for good sleep and that didn't sound very expensive.
- Peps Grand Palaise - had a few hours to kill and saw a mattress store so thought I'll go check out some more brands. Came across peps, the salesman was selling it hard over serta so thought I'd consider it. Felt great, infact better than serta. A bit on the former and less bouncy side but still very comfortable and more supportive. This had pocketed springs with memory foam layer and the top fabric was some viscose knotted fabric. Felt a notch above the Serta. Leaving that store left me very confused and wanting the better half to pick between this and serta. And this one costed around 65K.
- Peps Crystal - was nice too but didn't have the feel of the Palaise or perfect sleeper.
Now as I was leaving the store I saw a springwel store across the street and I was like why not let's give it a shot since my old springwel had served me quite well.
I went in rushed as in to just tick the box and tell my wife that I looked at all price ranges and move on my my front runners. The sales guy was very nice and I asked him pont blank that which one does he think is a better brand Serta or peps? I didn't even mention springwel. He politely said Serta hands down as peps quality has deteriorated over the years and they might shut down. I didn't take that seriously. And asked him if he has anything comparable. To which he responded yes maybe even better if you consider the savings. I said sure show me. Now in walks the Dark Horse.
- Springwel Eurosoft - It is a pocketed spring Natural Latex hybrid mattress. Now natural latex mattresses are premium-ly priced and have repeatedly seen reviews saying they are better compared to memory foam or pu foam. I lied on it and it felt really good. Maybe not as luxurious as the Palaise or as supportive as the perfect sleeper. But up there. And then he told me a 72*60 8" mattress could be mine for 33K only. Hearing this gave me the same feeling that I got when I first heard the XUV500 launch price ( the sound of brain and heart in agreement, the middle class eureka) and I started looking more at the positives of it than the negatives. It's a brand I've used, it has natural latex, I'm buying it from a brand store not a foam dealer, I get two free pillows

, and it is a pocket spring. A bit of haggling later fixed the price at 28K.
I went home picked my wife and brought her back to the store. Told her this is the mattress were getting ( never mentioned the other ones) and asked her if she's ok with it. She was. And I paid the advance and came back home dreaming about the future goodnight sleep I'm gonna get on my new mattress.
Looking forward to posting a short term and long term usage review.
