Have driven from San Jose CA to Lassen Volcanic Park CA and back in one day. Each side journey took about 6 hours (300 miles) and we ended up spending only 4 hours at the park!

Pisa(Italy)-Venice-Bologna-Udine-Salzburg(Austria)-Munich(Germany)-Innsbruck-Frankfurt-Hannover-Hamburg. A total of 1260 kms in 15 hrs with 3 big breaks and 3 small ones.

It was a Volkswagen multivan and we were 6 of us travelling and 3 driving. That was the most memorable drive of my life.

My family have regularly done Cochin - Tirumala (various routes, various vehicles). Between 8 and 18 hours - depending on drivers, vehicles and road conditions.

Buicks, Dodges (both second hand from HH the bishop), ambys (all versions), Padmini safari, Maruti Omni. On friends' cars, I have done this on Honda CIty (most uncomfortable of them all) and Zen.

Omini was by far the slowest - this was the one which took 18 hours. (Start from ekm at 3 AM, reach Thirumala at 11 - excluding the rest time). The City needed 14 hours on a Sunday, the Zen did it in 13; and obviously, the older cars did lesser time - but the roads were more deserted in those yonder golden days.

Darjeeling to Kolkata via Panagarh - about 750 km. Took 17 hours but due largely to a three hour long blinding thunderstorm in the evening that slowed down proceedings (Pangarh to Bardhaman took 2 hours). Plus another hour long hold up in the morning due to a fatal accident ahead of us.
