My first driving lessons was from my friend on his santro. I used to go for the driving class in the morning and at night around 11 he would come and pick me up and give me driving lessons and I used to drive in my local area for an hour almost everyday. This way I started getting the control over the steering and better road sense. Over a period of month I gradually started to drive when there was traffic .

Re: How and when did you learn to drive?

My first driving experience was during my childhood days when I was a boy of 8 years, we were staying in a small town Chitradurga and my father was working there. The first lessons of steering were from drivers Mr. Gangaram and Mr. Hiremath, my father used to come to pick me from school in his department's jeep. The drivers used to seat me on their laps and give steering lessons, this continued for 1-2 months and later I used to steer the jeep comfortably. But I was too short to do the gear change which they did. In year 2000, my father was working in Bidar, we went for a city visit on a Jeep, I asked the driver to teach me, he gave the steering and amazingly I remembered what I did 15 years ago, by the time we came back home that evening I was comfortable driving the jeep. The final lessons were on Bidar-Humnabad state highway.

Re: How and when did you learn to drive?

I learnt to drive in February 1997. Not much, a driver had shown me the basic and I practiced for an hour.

The true master was NH 9 and that too during the night.

It was Ambassador, 1971 model. My father's.

I miss the clear uncluttered view where one can see the chrome headlight ring.

Learning to drive on an Ambassador is an experience in itself. Once you master it, all other cars are child's play.

Re: How and when did you learn to drive?

I will never forget the first time I drove a car.

I must have been 12 or 13(?) getting into 8th grade at school. I studied in Bishop Cotton Boys' and the school has several fields. When we'd gone to confirm my final-exam results, my father allowed me to drive our then brand-new Ikon 1.6 on one of the fields as he was pretty pleased with my grades.

He sat beside me and instructed me to do figures of '8' on the large field, and I still remember how mad he got when I sneakily and gradually built up speed and slotted that lovely 'box into 3rd. He panicked as though the world would end.

Driving came very naturally to me.

I had a few other opportunities here and there as well. I drove my grandparents' Maruti 800 for a few hundred meters when I was 14, and even their Premier Padmini (I love that column shifter) I even got to drive our carb'd Zen before we sold it for the Santro.

I'm a keen observer, and I've been watching my dad drive ever since I was a toddler.

However, my father was very adamant that the next time I ever get to drive is when I acquire my learner's permit. And I had to go through the entire procedure for my LL as well as my DL at the RTO. No short-cuts for me. And I'm glad I did it that way!

I eventually started driving in our Santro and it took me about a week or so to completely get the hang of it, and a few weeks more to fit in with the traffic and drive comfortably.

I've clocked close to 20k on my Santro, and perhaps 10k in my Civic and about 2k in the Jazz ever since I got my DL. I will never stop driving.Petrol prices and traffic be damned!

Re: How and when did you learn to drive?

I was 20 when i started learning to drive a car. It was final that new car would be arriving at home in short time. But who would drive it regularly ? So it was me who has to do that. Started learning at Maruti Driving School in their 22 days program. My first car was Alto 800.
