I used to be a bit nervous while operating the gear lever mounted on the steering column in my dad's FIAT 1100 Delight which followed Herald. I always liked the smooth floor-mounted gear of Herald as compared to that of FIAT 1100 D.

Re: Which Car Did You Learn To Drive In?

1st learnt driving in an empty helipad on my 2001 4-spd Maruti 800.

I now drive occasionally on barren land in my i10 Kappa. Have ventured only upto 3rd gear and 40 km/h.

Re: Which Car Did You Learn To Drive In?

Hmm I thought there was a similar thread. Never mind. The first has to be a standard 20 van. I was in 5th std. then graduated to all kinds of mahindras, mostly the petrol engined 3 gear ones to the later diesel engined ones. then the 1973 AMBY, a few Gypsies, and a few 540z. Ofcourse there was this odd matadror and the tata 1210. The old original M800 ( Bomb), the Dolphin (awesome), the Fiats, the herald etc etc. Well, we all do tend to learn something new everyday, in that sense I guess I did most of the learning and still learning in everything new I drive or being driven. But in the true sense my learning to drive, alone, confident, 36/36 (everyone worth his salt on ghats knows 36/36) has to be the mm. Ofcourse underage, those days were different. I wouldn't even dare something like this at this age!

HvKumar is very true about the column shift, It takes a bit of finesse to do that. I did know of a particular driver who used to break the selector shaft every few months, and eventually I learnt to change the shaft my self. Ofcourse this particular driver would avoid 3rd altogether, straight to 4th from second * grin*

*EDIT*: 1st drove in the helipad when I was ten.
BTW, I'm just back after I reversed my i10 into a ditch.
I guess I should go back to driving the Maruti for a while.

Re: How and when did you learn to drive?

I can't vote on the poll! I learnt to drive when I was 12. Thoroughly illegal, I know, but that was a different time, and it was Kanpur!

^^ Roy, I think we are sailing in the same boat, so no vote

@Mods, is it Ok if I mention my driving learning age? I am asking this because I know it is an illegal age, hence this query.

Spike

PS- There are many who have mentioned 16* which is also illegal!

Re: How and when did you learn to drive?

Age - 16
Tutor - Mom
Car - Toyota Carina (Left hand drive)
Location - Fujairah (U.A.E)

Inspite Gulf being strict on Law enforcement my mom used to give me the car on inner roads.

Oh yeah my first step to learn driving was sit on the co-passenger seat and change the gear of my car when my father used to drive

Re: How and when did you learn to drive?

can't vote as the relevant age band is missing. I learnt driving when I was in 7th Std at the age of 12. My dad bought a new premier Padmini and I managed to learn to drive that on my own.

Re: How and when did you learn to drive?

Time: May 1988
Age: 15
Car: Ambassador Mk II - column mounted gear lever
Tutor: Grandfather

Grandpa realised (dunno how!) that I was planning to take the car out and teach myself driving in 10th Std holidays. He short circuited my plans by teaching me to drive himself!

We started in National College Jayanagar grounds, and later graduated to driving all over Bangalore. Yes, yes, I broke the law big time by driving on public roads when I was 16. However, I never drove alone.
