Actually it's true, reverse gear is always bigger than rest of the gears in any vehicle. I am not aware of any exception if any exists.

I officially started driving in 1995 (I was 13) in a Jeep CJ3B

Once I gained dad's certificate, I was allowed to take dad's Maruti 1000 and there was no looking back..

This was back in 1985:
While driving, Dad always used to make me sit on his lap.. I was 3 years old then.
He used to take off his hands (All thanks to the huge room available in Ambys and much much less traffic on roads) This continued for 2-3 years...

2 wheeler on dad's brand new Yamaha RXG in 1996 (14 years old).

Saw this thread only now. Anyway here are my responses.

- Age : 18
- Tutor : My Driver
- Car : Ambassador, Isuzu Engine
- Location in India : Chennai, Tambaram.

One observation, more than 75% have mentioned the age to be 15-20. But in actuals the rate should be 10% in case if you take the regular population into consideration, I mean not just TBHP population.

But the fact is people who learn the driving between 15-20 will be inclined to learn more about car thus, would join forums like TBHP thats why you are seeing this number skewed.

Which Car Did You Learn To Drive In?

I learnt driving in-house in my late dad's Standard Herald in the late 1960s. I didn't join any driving school. My maternal uncle, who was just 4 years elder than me, was my guru.

My dad, who was a disciplinarian, didn't allow me to touch the wheel of his brand new two-door sedan, Herald that he had bought for Rs 16,000+ from Union Motors, Mount Road, Madras. However, he used my services for washing the car! But, my uncle helped me clandestinely and taught me the first lessons of car driving in the absence of my dad.

Herald used to be manufactured in India by Standard Motors Products with its plant located at Vandalur near Madras.

I liked the reserve lever on the petrol tank in the boot, just like the ones provided in the two-wheelers. When Herald comes to a grinding halt due to lack of fuel, we had to operate the lever manually so that the reserve fuel would start flowing in. Our gray Herald looked cute with her all white-walled tyres, which were a fashion statement on those days. It had powerful and bright headlamps of Lucas-TVS brand.

On the whole, it was a nice car I enjoyed driving.

Now, fellow-members can share their driving experience here.

Re: Which Car Did You Learn To Drive In?

I too never attended a driving school and learnt to drive in, Ahem, a vehicle costing 2.5 Crore INR.

A 120ton Dumper at a coal mine.

I fine tuned my skills with buses before moving on to smaller cars.

By the way, I believe a similar thread exists on the forum.

Premier Padmini, Executive version. It was a diesel with steering column shifter, drum brakes all round and a supremely comfortable ride.

Whoa! What if something goes wrong?

I learnt driving in a humble M800. Nobody taught me as such, I picked up the skill through observation. I was supervised by someone elder though, during the initial days.

Learned navigation(steering) on a Amby. Later when I turned 18, joined a driving school and learnt the art in a 800!
