I initially started driving (though secretly) sometime in late 16s but any formal training took place in late 17 when i was back in town for summer holidays and was to turn 18 in a month. I actually got my learner's license on the day of my 18th birthday and formal license exactly 1 month later, all by the law.

Age - 19 - 19.5
Tutor - Myself.
Car - The omnipresent Maruti 800.

I learnt to drive on my own , my Dad just told me how to steer. I used to observe anyone who used to drive , my dad , the bus driver , the auto driver , the cycle rickshaw driver ( hope you get the picture) and one day just took the 800 out for a spin.

Never had an accident those days in Bangalore.

Loved Bangalore then , calm and peaceful. Driving used to be a pleasure , not a pain.

Did not see this thread before. A nice thread!!!

This thread brought back the old memories of my dad teaching me to ride the scooter. After countless times of failed clutch releases and dad teaching me patiently how to release the clutch, I finally learnt it.

Brand new Omni in the garage. Nobody at home. I knew where the keys for the Omni were kept. Took the car out for a spin and kept the car back in the garage safely. No one got a doubt. Continued this for a week till I was pretty confident to take it out on the main roads. Surprised dad when I offered to drive one day.

First time behind the wheel of a 4 wheeler.
Age 17
on a Mahindra Tractor .

Tutor : Myself, I was kinda natural with vehicles though. Never put any effort to learn. I could drive the moment I took the wheel.

Funny part is how I learnt to ride a motor cycle.
Though I was riding my Grandpa's moped (TVS 50) since 10, I always wanted to ride my dad's yezdi road king.
One fine afternoon, when dad was out of town, and mom was sleeping, I locked from out side, pushed the bike to the school ground and started the beast. It used to make such a racket that the whole town woke up (small town called Madhugiri) one of our neighbors might have opened the door for my mom and the joy ride ended soon. But I had accomplisehd what I wanted to.

We never had a car in the family until 2002. My dad used to work for HCL hyderabad as an admin mgr and we used to have a whole lot of ambassdors visiting us and I used to take every opportunity to go for a ride. I gifted the first car WagonR I bought to my dad which he still owns. BTW, I love royal look of the well maintained company owned ambassdors

4 Wheeler :

- Age : 14years and some days when I drove the first car alone.
- Tutor : Theory --> Maternal Uncle , Practical --> Alone
- Car : Omni was the first car
- Location in India : Jabalpur

Had theory since I was 10 years old held the steering for the first time when I was 11. Just got the courage and left one morning alone; drove like half an hour, came back and parked the car as it was. Nobody still knows about it in my house. I know there's nothing to boast about I was just stupid that time.

Regards,
Anubhav.
