Majority of the cars sold in this country do not have ABS - and even if it's offered as optional - no one would go for it because it COSTS extra. And people here are not exactly known to spend for features which they think are useless. For them a dhinchak music system is a far better thing than having ABS.
You are right, I thought I was one of those people when I was contemplating between going for a good ICE system or ABS, and to even my surprise, I chose ABS.

But yes, had I decided on getting an LDI instead of the VDI, I would not have gotten ABS even though I would have been willing to pay 20k extra. It has to be offered as an option on ALL variants before we can start discussing this.

The only company which offers ABS as optional on all the models is Hyundai on the Santro

Manufacturers cant just keep safety features for top model, in the case of the Safari the EX should be having ABS as an option.

When I bought my VDi ABS wasn't an option and I would have had to wait at least 6 months for the model with ABS
Yes ABS was always an option on the VDi from the day of launch, only thing is it took time coming, had a waiting of 3 months and it was worth the wait.

While I don't have ABS, I have a lot of BS. Does that count?
Hmmm, ya it does count

I have a Getz 1.3. I opted for the GLX model just for the ABS, since I do highway drives once a month. The only difference between the GLX and the model lower (GLS) is the presence of ABS and alloy wheels. The cost diff is approx Rs 40K.

Year & Make of Car :
Getz GLX 1.3
Tyres : Maxxis 295/60 R14
Discs : 4 wheels (I think)
Was ABS std/optional : Standard
If Optional for How Much More : NA
EBD : Yes

If Optional for How Much More :
EBD : No.

I have never felt the need for ABS and I am apprehensive about having it because one needs to change longstanding braking habits, which are almost subconscious reflex-action responses in an emergency and not easily changed.

For example, with ABS one should apply maximum braking pressure right at the beginning and not relax the effort, as the computer does the pumping. But I am tuned to putting in the *minimal* needed effort at the beginning (and increase, pump as necessary) so as to make the maximum use of the braking distance available. Will not be easy to change this.
