re: The Tata Safari 2.2L Technical / Problems Thread

Gurus,

Update on my recon Engine status! After getting the recon Engine my beast has clocked 1000 kms on the odo. I had been to COncorde Motors, Mysore road to get the Engine oil and Oil filter changed.
After this process, I asked teh SA to show me the details of the job card for the previous work (Recon Engine).
Shockingly, they had charged me for Oil seperator and clutch slave cylinder. Then I raised my voice remembering the earlier posts that slave cylinder is covered under Warranty / EW. Then the SA reversed those charges. Thanks for this forum and Team BHP Rocks !!!! I will share the detailed invoice when I get it. Probably I should be getting it in 2 days.

Again Thanks to all the members of Team BHP and the moderators. This saved me 2000 Rupees today.

Also, you have the option of getting this connected with the Parking lights or Independent. I got it connected with the Parking ones.
I just got fog lights fitted to my LX yesterday. Setup: Minda fog lights (Rs. 850 each), Finolex wiring (Rs. 120), connectors (Rs. 30), push-pull switch which fits next to the steering in the dummy slot (Rs. 90), labour (Rs. 350). Total expense of Rs. 2290.

T.A.S.S was quoting around 9k - which included 4k for the switch panel and 1.5k for labour.

The wiring is completely separate, taken directly from the battery and connected with the switch - pretty simple. I didn't know this could be connected with the parking lights - I am sure that will be much more helpful. Can someone please tell how this can be done? Does this mess up (read: cut) the original wiring/warranty.

I also need to align them as the throw of the rhs light is a bit too short.

Where is the relay? It is integral part of any of the high current bulbs wiring. Without relay it is very dangerous . It can catch fire.

Look like your electrician gave direct connection from battery through switch. This is wrong method. You should add proper rating relay in the wiring. Also, wire selection from battery to fog should be proper (4sq mm), as your fogs will draw ~10 Amps current.

Yes, it's 4 sq mm Finolex wire. I'll get a relay added asap. Any specs for the relay? Thanks!

Just wondering why you decided to go with a new wiring. My 2011 lx had the wiring and relay in place. All what we did was connect the fog lamps to that. We had to open the central switch panel on dashboard. Wiring was available up to there. From there we added 2ft wire for the switch and brought it near to the steering. Its connected to parking light already and with the extra switch I can decide to keep it on or not when the parking light is on.

Was all done by a local electrician, around 20mts job.

re: The Tata Safari 2.2L Technical / Problems Thread

I completed 10k kms y'day in around 2 & a half months. Most of the driving has been on the highway.
I was reading on the forum that one should do the engine oil change earlier than the 15k service. Shall I go for it now or wait for 15k mark.?

Stick to the company recommended interval as you are mostly doing highway drives.
No need to go for oil change now.
Sticking to company intervals will also mean that there will be no warranty issues(esp during extended warranty)

Agree with TSK about getting changed at 15k only. Earlier changing is advised when driving mostly in city/mountain. If you want to get it changed, get it done at TASC. It would not affect the warranty as same is mentioned also in the service book. I got my oil changed from outside at 7k intervals, and the TASC did not know about it, as you the get the same tata genuine oil filter in outside market also. You may want to clean your air filter though.

re: The Tata Safari 2.2L Technical / Problems Thread

Safari Gurus,

After my beast got a recon Engine, it has clocked 1500 KMs and so far running good and smoothly. The only problem I am facing currently is the jerking at around 1300 - 1500 RPM. I have asked the SA at Concorde motors for ECU software remap (They agreed for this after I showed the print outs of this forum). But I have to wait until their laptop is repaired.

Any other solutions that you guys are aware for this problem ? In the mean time I will try to search it from the older posts on this thread .

My friend tried doing it on his safari, but was unable to reach the section where the indicator bulb could be replaced as there is a metal partition separating it from engine bay, kindly explain the procedure how to replace the bulb.

If you cannot reach it, headlight assembly can be loosened by first removing the grill nut, and then the headlight assembly main screw.

re: The Tata Safari 2.2L Technical / Problems Thread

Hi all,

I have a small problem. The rear door has started "squeaking" a lot these days. I have to travel everyday on some not-so-smooth roads and the road is for a really long stretch so the sound is really getting on my nerves. It feels like a family of rats have move into the rear door on rent. I read on this thread that it could be from the seatbelt height adjuster but I tried that solution but the sound still continues so what do I do? Please suggest a DIY cause I dont want to go to TASS(I prefer to wear ear plugs then go to the TASS!)

If it is the tailgate, a permanent solution is to retrofit the sumo latch/ lock. Or put some rubber/ plastic padding below the door ( on the floor ) on the left side. This has been discussed on this thread earlier. Check for Dadu's post on this.

The guys at TASC checked the wires the glow plug but unable to find the problem. They said the problem could be due to faulty sensor but they said they may have to check each wire on the multimeter. Since I had to go back home they told me not to worry and get it done at a TASC near me.

Now to report the problem again

I have a previous history of rat attack on my car already posted in this forum. However once repaired it never gave me any problem

When I went to Karnataka for initial 1500 Kms I had no issues even though car had run almost 600 Kms each day. Right after the accident where the bike busted my right front wheel cap, OVRm the light appeared. It went off on driving the car for some distance.

Observations after that incident as follows

The indicator lamp goes of on initial system check. It appears after the car has run a bit ( maybe when it heats up, though it's nothing to do with the heat indicator as to when it appears)

I noticed it appears mostly when I have to engage the clutch more in low gears

On my return journey to Mumbai and I drove almost 1000kms in a day the light goes of when the car is in overdrive but comes on as I slow it and change gear , for example at Toll booths. The car is running fine and no issues at all.

So what could be the issue. The guys at TASC checked all wires above which were repaired also changed the heat timer or something ( not sure buts it's an part located alongside the under bonnet fuse box) and also checked the sensors under the gear box. They also reset the ECU but the code appeared again which traced it to the heater coil assembly (or something sorry guys no idea)

Now when I go to TASC here what should I tell them ?.

Since the car has run almost 2k after that without any issues should I continue driving and go to TASC as per my schedule as its pain to go to TASC all time as it wastes my day since I am an medical practitioner.?.

Since the light comes up when clutch is engaged more has it got something to do with it. I inquired this with TASC and they answered negative. ?

Please suggest

Regards

As this problem had cropped last year without no plausible solution after all checks , the light used to come and go intermittently. There were also good suggestions from the experts here which when conveyed to TASS were carried out but still the problem persist

At last on a visit during July2012 for final servicing of my car I got this problem fixed. It seems the wire behind the glow plug had melted giving the light on the dash after some run.
Now i am really perplexed as to how such a small error could not be caught by service center people after almost 2 -3 checks

Anyways I posted this so it may help others

I have another query

I am going on another road trip this time to Rajasthan [Udaipur upto Ranthambore]
My car from past months is barely used, though i have serviced it in July and is working great. Since I am travelling with my wife apart from precautions like carrying
Tubless puncture kit, extra oil, air pump, tyre pressure gauge, i had few queries

1>since my car is now 2 years old, how to know if my battery is weak. I mean i do not have any start problems or anything just want to be sure . Can a battery mechanic check it for me

2>I had purchased 1litre GTX oil year back as backup. Its unopened/sealed. Can I use that or should i buy new one

3>Any other precautions with respect to clutch and brake [these were checked in last service]

I am leaving o 2nd december. Any tips etc would be appreciated

My route is Mumbai- Udaipur [halt 4 days]
Udaipur-Kota-Sawai [not Tonk road as suggested by fellow Bhpian but toll road]

Regards

Yes.

You can use the one year old oil. The chances of using the oil are rare for modern Dicor Engine - unless you spring a leak which is again rare.

3>Any other precautions with respect to clutch and brake [these were checked in last service]

Check your wheel alignment. An off wheel alignment can cause pulling to one side when braking. You can ask the TASS to check for topping up any fluids.
