Yet Another Test Drives

Well its Raining Test drives, so I guess I will have a go.
Drove to dada motors ldh with family in a 3.0 done 25000 kms, so had a comparison point handy.
Soon the demo car comes and the over eager salesman is harping over "new gine blah blah".
Put the car into gear and drive off.
The Extra horses do make a difference. The engine is more car like, and anything above 1500rpm it will pull cleanly.
Put 5th gear at 40kmph with the rev counter close to 1000rpm.
At first it slowly increases speed, at around 60kmph you feel that the truck is finally pulling. hundred is a ease and it feels you can go easily till 160-170.
But had no road to go that fast.
Since it was a VX, it had ABS. I wonder how the braking on the normal ones be.
Tried a few quick stops. Its better than the old one.

To sum it up, did not find anything worse on the 2.2. For only 7000 more, its definitely worth it, provided there are no QC issues.

I also took it off the highway on to a bumpy shoulder at high speed. It kept its composure.

4x4 in Safari 2.2

Does anyone know why there is no 4x4 option in LX version . By bringing 4x4 in the next version, it is costing us 2L more than it was with the original Dicor 3.0

That finance combo looks good to me, w.r.t. the other options available in the market.

That's the whole idea. Why would anyone buy EX if LX 4X4 was available ?

TD of 2.2 and glad that I have 3.0

Hello All,

Just had the opportunity to TD the new 2.2 VX @ Concorde, Bangalore

A word of caution and input to all new buyers

Here are my observations as I currently own the 3.0 EX :

At the start of the engine, the 2.2 looks very refined and no noise or vibrations at all.

Started to drive - Pick up looks to be good in 1st gear

2nd and 3rd gear - Here is where the TATA's have messed it up. Suddenly you hear a strange gruntling noise from the engine the response is very flat. The 3.0 is in a class of its own here with uniform torque distribution.

The vehicle feels very rough and lacks torque in 2nd, 3rd and 4th gear.
Compare this to the 3.0 which is very classy and drives more like a German car. You never feel that you have run out of breath in the 3.0 and the vehicle does not have any gruntling sound.

I know that this is 16 V and DOHC, but nowhere as good as the push rod 3.0. Infact, I remember Steer commenting on one of the earlier threads that no company will get a worse engine as a replacement for the older one. But Steer, beleive me we will be ever glad as proud owners of 3.0.

Conclusion: Those who want to own the Safari for its class and drive quality, please go and block whatever 3.0 is available in stock. There is a huge discount of 50,000 too. That makes it a VFM proposition and later it will become an invaluable asset. There are also some bad measures like the new spare wheel cover with a lot of rexine in it. The 3.0 had a nostalgic and classy cover.

Any other 3.0 owners, please feel free to comment.

Nothing specific that you need to be worried of. But given the Tata learning curve, things get better by the day. But nevertheless, be happy and proud that you have a 3.0

Hey Dont Worry, All the safaris manufacture from specifically KTZ series October,06 have all the necessary retrofits already carried out on pre oct 06 vehicles from factory itself. I guess Sumans dicor is also and oct 06 born. I have the Oct06 model myself. For retrofits please refer to the Steers LTR on his dicor, or jyobebs LTR. Other than that was always an Italian Job

Nevertheless lets get back to main 2.2 discussion. After reading the threads it seems that 2.2 party went fizzzzzzzzzzzzz. Does it follow the same spate as 3.0 ltr in initial days..or doesnt it is the thing to be watched.

Did anyone get his 2.2 delivered. Turbanman was supposed to get his today wasnt he ?

I would put it in this way...

3.0 is a descendant of 407 LCV range which had huge torque and designed for load carrying capacity & therefore a narrow powerband. I did read somewhere on google that mostly all the trucks which were overhauling big load had there max torque developed @ lesser RPM & this characteristic is very much there on 3.0 ltr engine. I guess we've got used to the range of 672RPM till 2400RPM thing.

2.2 is completely new and its characteristics are completely different. It revs more than 3k rpm . develops and sustains peak torque over a little wider margin.. has VTT aiding to less turbo lag and a smoother power delivery as compared to 3.0 cousin wherein turbo kicks you @1500 itself.

I guess a little fine tuning of VTT would aid in a good grunt in the gears you mentioned. But I cant say for sure that tata have messed up. I am sure they would have put in lot of R&D and their thoughts. Regarding power delivery look at the graph of max torque being reached for 3.0 ltr and 2.2 on the website.. 2.2 is available on safaridicor, but if u have that 3.0 brochure, one might be able to make out a clearcut distinction between their power/torque delivery.

2.2 is Different

I have the 3.0 catalogue with me - a very interesting observation is that the 3.0 has a torque of about 240 Nm @ 1000 rpm, peaks to 300 @ 1800 rpm and tapers to 260 Nm @ 3000 rpm.
The 2.2 has 180 Nm torque @ 1000 rpm, 300 @ 1500 rpm, 320 @ 2000 rpm and drops off to 250 @ 4000 rpm.
so you see that the 3.0 has higher torque both at low end and higher end.
Whatever, the numbers say, I am pretty sure that the 3.0 feels better. The 2.2 engine is more or less like the Innova I have experienced. It is more van like
