Hi guys,
As promised here is my personal review about the RD tuning box. Lets begin from level zero. The box is very much similar to petes box except that in the petes box the modes to stage 1 or stage 2 can not be changed on the fly. The RD box consists of 4 settings which can be changed on the fly with a knob(pictures to follow). Stock, Economy, Power1 and Power2 are the 4 settings available. I have driven the vehicle for about 600 km after the box has been installed and i must say every bit of the 600km has been enjoyed. Now let the pics do some talking.(Complete review in the next post.

The knob looks like it is not removable- so what happens when you take her in for service, wont they know something has been done?

A pic review alone? As Phoenix mentioned, is the switch removeable?

What about a full page review of each stage and economy in eco mode. Will go a long way in helping all the GETZ Crdi members to check this as an alternative to the Pete's

Here is the prologue to the review

As mentioned earlier 3 modes and one stock mode which can be changed on the fly. Karthik(at RD) seems to have uploaded a conservative map for the box so that i can get used to the power. If needed i could go get the aggressive maps uploaded. This is one of the plus points i mean you could go to RD anytime and get the new maps uploaded and since that can be done most of these maps are road tested in Bangalore.

Ok here is the story:
A few days after brraj booked his getzi we guys went on a night drive to nandi hills and that was when rajeev was with me in car. We already knew the front end torque was more than that of a peted elantra and so there started a discussion between us. Rajeev was like if the stock getz can smoke the elantra until 160 then imagin what a peted or a tuned getz could do. That was when i started salivating(pun intended). Hmmm now what if i peteify my getz. The next day i get a call from kp saying he was on stage 1 petes and his description about the g-force that kept him stuck to his seat. Now i was even more desperate to peteify. That was when i started planning and then found that i don't really have enough VITAMON for a petes box. Rajeev was like 'saaar! when are you peteifying your getz'. I said i dint have enough money at the moment for the box. That was when he said why dont you try the RD tuning box instead(it has more features and it is not as costly - no offence to petes box because it has its own set of advantages). Few days later Rajeev calls me up and says - 'banni saar, RD hogana, tuning box sumane try madanna', so we fixed up and appointment with guys at RD. Once we reached there work immediately started on the car and the box was installed within about 20 mins. The wait felt like 20 hours though because i could not wait to get behind the wheel. Then we took the car for a spin. Till this time i have never sat in a peted getz or a peted verna, just tried the peted elantra for a minor stretch, hence, i expected the performance to be something like that of a peted elantra, but what was waiting for me was a totally different experience.

Took the car to OTR in economy mode. This was when i really found the difference these boxes can make. I was trying to push the car to find some power in and lo! the car just would not go. I push hard until about 1900 rpm and that is when the turbo kicks in and there is a blast - the car suddenly gets moving like someone lit a cracker at its back.

Next the car was put in power1 mode and i started driving and was waiting for the turbo to kick in. I checked out my instrument cluster and i was already at 3500rpm . Ok now i start flooring the throttle - man i got stuck to those seats.

Then came the power2 mode. Need i say more imaging something like 20% more power. It was like my car transformed into a petrol vehicle - it was revving away like crazy and in no time i was hitting 150.

Then in the evening took it for a spin at the new airport road hit 170 with ease that was the max i could do then because of a little bit of traffic.

-----Thats that about the first time with the box-----

Now i take it easy for the next 2 days until the saturday drive to salem and yercaud. Saturday morning comes and i am all beefed up. Wake up Rahul early because i could not take the excitement. Let me now do a fast forward to 11:30 - Nice Road. Hmmm! paid the toll fee and then wait for Rajeev to come. That is when the adrenalin levels got a bit too high and i could take it now more. Floored the throttle but there was no torque - the engine got flooded so the car took of slowly and then there was a sudden rush the engine started revving away like crazy. Rahul(mclaren1885) was with me. Took the car to 190kmph without a problem. Snaps of that to be uploaded soon.

The mode was in stage 2 setting for the complete trip and according to Rahul the power increase was about 15-20bhp in stage 2 that is lik 125-130bhp.

There is so much more to speak but then the post will get a bit too long so i shall stop here and i shall post my review about each setting along the fuel efficiency, driveablity, top speed and everything else.

By the way guys these boxes increse the rail pressure.
Now the question to the gurus - since the rail pressure is increase does it mean i am running rich, does it mean more fuel is injected per unit time as increasing the pressure for one pulse increased the amount of fuel injected right?

You have still not experienced the real power as you are running on RDs non-aggressive maps and that too with stock filter.

Important things TODO

- Branded after market air filter.
- Re-tune RD ecu.
- Advan neova tyres only.
- Run only on synthetic oil.
- As you do lot of bangy night drives go for HIDs as stock bulbs are pathetic.

And now for the reivew:
P.S. I am still using the stock filter even though i have the GC because of wrong size.
@KP - i will be posting the filter pics soon. It is too big so am photoshopping it.

Stock mode - this needs no new introduction - same 110 horses pumping loads of torque(enough for most people but not enough for me :P)

Economy mode - at first i was like why do i need an economy mode instead i will have 3 power modes. Since Karthik said i can come again and change to what i require, i was like fine i will go ahead and test it as well. Belive me guys this perception of mine changed as soon as i started driving in the city. I slotted the knob to power mode and i could not drive all that well so, i was like lets try the eco mode. The car gets soooo smoooth and soft once that is done and it gets so easy to drive in city that it can not be described it needs to be felt. Of course the car loses out a lot of power but then in a city like bangalore you cant use more than 40 horses out of the 110 horses. This mode actually thought me how to drive this vehicle slowly . Now for the stats -
Power : much much lesser than 110bhp. More than anything the torque reduces a lot.
Speed - The car suffers to go till 1800 rpm after than there is some power to play with but again after 3500 rpm the power loss is felt.
Mileage - I am letting you guys guess that. In stock mode i am getting 14kmpl.

Power mode 1 - nice to drive in this mode the power is increased by 10%. The turbo lag almost vanishes. Loads of torque to play with. The driveablity is fine if you are not the kind that alternates your right foot between the brake and the throttle every alternate second. The car revs away quiet easily to 4500rpm.
Power : 10% more than 110bhp. Gives you the feeling that the car wants to take off. The revs away to 4500 like a petrol vehicle.
Speed - Took it to about 180kmph without any issues.
Mileage - Cant yet comment on this but yeah in this mode i dont expect anything less than 13kmpl.

Power mode 2 - CRAZINESS UNLEASHED in 2 words. It is fun to drive in this mode. Turbo lag is virtually non existant though the blast of power can be felt. A petrol engine will not be as rev crazy as this. Dudes listen to me if you are crazy about power then this is the box and the mode to be in. Adrenalin pumps like crazy and your mind goes haywire. You feel like not letting go off the throttle.
Power : 20% more than 110bhp. Rocket unleashed. The revs away to 4500 better than a petrol vehicle.
Speed - Took it to about 200kmph without any issues.
Mileage - In this mode i dont expect anything less than 12kmpl.

But only issue is that i get lot of black smoke. This could be because of my filter.

The box is yet under testing so will try even the aggressive map and then shall post more details. Till then i am off torquing

Shyam

Mclaren's review on Getz with RD ECU!

Ok, Shyam is all a little too excited and his figures seem to be climbing the sky like his speedo is these days .

Here is my take:

1. Eco mode: Car turns very sluggish. Its a pain to get to 2000 rpm. The ECU acts like a self limiter to 2,000 rpm. Once you cross 2,000 rpm you have something to play with. ECO mode pronounces the turbo lag by a lot. Ok if you are driving in traffic. I would just stick the ECU to stock mode. To heck with the FE at the cost of such compromise.

2. Stock mode: I'll just try to talk about how the engine behaves. Boost kicks in close to 1900rpm. From 2000-3500 car revs beautifully. But if one notices very carefully, around 3600 the power starts to taper off slightly. Its not like the swift, where after 3200 it basically feels like dead revs. It makes power till about 4000 rpm but one can notice the difference between 2000-3500 & from 3500-4000.

3. P1 mode: Haven't tried it, so nothing to add.

4. P2 mode: Now let us compare this to the stock mode. With P2 engaged, the car doesn't show that contrast difference between 2000-3500 and 3500-4000. It feels like one band, revving cleanly all the way to 4,000 rpm. On this map, ideal shift point is 4,000 rpm. This is the stark difference between the stock mode and P2. Also, the turbo kicks in a little more violently throughout the range. It can easily be felt.

Shyam, no offense. But since I am guessing that you haven't driven that many modded cars, I would say that in P2 mode car should be putting around 8-10% more power. Only way to find out would be to test it on the V-box.

I would love to do a comparo between the Pete's box & the RD Ecu. Next weekend I shall put the Pete's box into Shyam's car and try out the difference and keep you guys posted. Hopefully, if Karthik is kind enough, we might be able to provide some Vbox testing results for both the ECU's as well.

According to me, the to do list for you guys would be:
1. Get AD-07's.
2. Get conical air filter.
3. Use synthetic oil.
4. Get suspension.
5. More aggressive maps in this very order.

I am guessing, Getz comes with standard H4. If that is the case, I would stick to 100/90's. I find HID's pretty much useless on H4's, specially the white ones.

Shyam! A good petrol engine is leagues ahead. And I don't think you should be comparing it to the revving of a petrol engine. For a diesel, the way your car revs is wonderful and pretty quick too.
