re: Review: 1st-gen Mahindra Thar (2011 - 2019)

Yesterday I went to the Automotive's stock yard at Kompally and saw 2 THAR CRDe's. One Red and one silver/rocky beige. Also saw 2 THAR DI in the ASC. I wonder when it will be launched in Hyderabad.

BTW understand there is already 1 THAR CRDe on road in Hyderabad!

@2themax: That's the CRDe. See the intercooler in front of the radiator.

re: Review: 1st-gen Mahindra Thar (2011 - 2019)

The Test Drive Thar used in this thread did not have the Canopy. I got a chance to take some pics up close.

Few things one would note
1. The front cabin is as good as having a hard top atleast to my mind. Gave it a hard knock on the surface and its as good as a fibre hard top.
2. The velcros mentioned by Dhabar sir are all present and you can see how the canopy is attached to the body with railings at the side.
4. I really doubt if this canopy will flap even at higher speeds. You can notice how this canopy is attached in the rear cabin giving a feel of hard top .
3. I had mentioned at two points the "rail" is a little short and hence you can expect some dust to come in from there. However given the overlap of the exterior material may be - that does the trick and its as good as sealed.
4. At least to my mind - the soft top should provide adequate safety - well someone wants to cut into the fabric then you can't help - you can't help that in a sedan if someone wants to break the window to access your ICE.

re: Review: 1st-gen Mahindra Thar (2011 - 2019)

Dear Carrot Eater - thank you. In the fourth picture, we had provided an ingenious solution of having a folded flap with a magnet sewn up inside it. It worked on the prototypes but could not be introduced due to large variation in magnet quality. If the magnet slipped, it flapped vigorously, made noise and spoilt the paint. In the second picture, you can see the direction of the velcros and the total absence of wrinkles. In the first picture you can see the "Z" axis adjusters provided. Please also remember that the canopy rear top & side faces are design protected for camouflaged hard cover application. Also, please try to operate the zippers up and down continuously 100 times, with one hand only. Then see the length of the velcros below the zippers. Got it? Good!

A sincere request - can somebody please post Gypsy pictures of same locations? Somebody would be very interested to look at them. 26 years, eh? The thinking process takes 26 minutes, provided somebody thinks! . How many GB of computer memory will you need to match my brain? Forget it!

Dear Shekaran - I saw my all time favourite "Cat Concerto" cartoon made in 1946 yesterday night at home. "Tom never learns"! .

Best regards,

Behram Dhabhar

Hi DB Sir,

Must be a rebooting problem or maybe the RAM wasn't aligned properly, so it took 26 Years.

Regards,

Arka

PS - Sekharan Sir, do you know why Tom never learns, because he always skirts the real issues and you know what Jerry does to him

BD and Spike its indeed shocking that CMVR regulations restrict so much. I suggest, you being the industry stallwarts try to lobby with the govt to allow HT and AC in Jeeps. It will open up the market to a lot of us!

re: Review: 1st-gen Mahindra Thar (2011 - 2019)

Dear DB sir,
I am seriously contemplating buying this vehicle in its present form because i'm a mahindra loyalist and I have been with this thread since day one.Having said that ,can you please help me find answers to the following:
1.Why is there no test drive available in Delhi despite crying hoarse for the last 3 months?(may be a M&M sales boss can answer that)
2.What is the actual cost of air conditioning(I have got 4 dealers - 4 versions) and the list of parts to be fitted in the bay or dash?
3.How will the warranty be judged in case of damage due to off roading?

If you can answer, i'll be obliged because being in this industry for the last 12 years haven't really seen a functional product come out of a forum, but still struggling to find some answers!

re: Review: 1st-gen Mahindra Thar (2011 - 2019)

Great news that Thar has finally reached Chennai. As Milecruncher had mentioned its a CRDE. Is the tires shown OE specially for Chennai offroaders ? ;-)

What is the range of quotations that you have received for the AC. Back in Bangalore I have been told INR 48 K for the AC - from the dealer.

Cheers !

People say CMVR is an excuse for not offering something, but only those involved know what actually it is. Factory fitted HT is a can of worms.

That is REALLY good news. The more the Thar sells, the more confidence it should give to the decision makers within M&M to take this vehicle seriously and realize the true potential of the Thar. Hopefully, more bookings/sales should also result in customer feedback being taken seriously and incorporated into the vehicle.

I really look forward to seeing more & more Thar's on the road. I also hope that this vehicle becomes as important to M&M as the Scorpio's/Bolero's etc in the Indian context and not just being a pet project of few passionate individuals.
The longevity of this vehicle & further improvement will be a result of the 'decision makers' truly believing in this vehicle and not just few people pushing things around to make this possible.

Oops...I think too early for Celebrations, just called India garage , Chennai, the person told they have no idea as of now and MAYBE it will be released in April. The Thar in the photo should have been someone from the neighboring state for a service { Now I know why the Bighorn }
