The DBs, while comfort-oriented tyres, are a class apart compared to the JKs. My suggestion would be to let the tyres run in for another 200kms. If the problem still stays, do get your brake pads checked.

The only negative with the AVS is that these are unidirectional tires. To work properly these should rotate in only one direction (this is different from the inside/outside patterns). In layman terms tires mounted on one side of the vehicle cannot be simply mounted on to the other side. To do so the tire would have to be taken off the wheel/rim flipped over re-shod and only then can be mounted on the other side. This could be a bother in rare situations and the spare necessarily has to be a bi-directional tire.

KINI, read my post above and have your tires checked for direction of rotation. I have found the AVS excellent in terms of grip and braking on all sort of surfaces so something is definitely wrong, could be excess air in the tires but then I have seen the AVS being incorrectly mounted on more than one occasion. Having said the above I am thinking whether in correct direction of rotation could result in lack of grip. I know for a fact that over a period of time it wil eventually result in rapid tread wear. I guess we will find out if your tires are found to be incorrectly mounted. Do keep us posted.

My car has done close to 30k kms and running on the original set of brake pads.My previous JK's had uneven wear on the front so I switched them with the rear ones at 23k kms.Tyres were deteriorating at a constant rate since then.Nothing alarming though, until two weeks ago when I had a similar and a much scarier experience. That was when I decided to change tyres.

Could uneven wearing of brake pads be the issue? Now I know the Yokos are more comfort oriented but I was told that handling and grip will be much better than that of the JKs.The new tyres, atleast on appearence seem fine.Need your advice here. This issue has got me really worried.

AFAIK the Yokos that you have fitted belong to the AVS Db series whereas mine belong to the Db series.I don't think the Yoko ES Db 501 that I have fitted are unidrectional.Only the Db series stocks 205/60/R16 which is the stock size of Cruze.AVS Db stocks 205/55/R16 only. This is according to the Yoko India website.Could somebody please confirm that.

Refer to the web page again and look closely at the bottom left corner, it states 'Directional'

http://www.yokohama-india.com/dna_db.html

You may physically verify by checking your tire's sidewall. If it reads directional with the direction of rotation clearly marked out then that's your confirmation.

IIRC only the C & the A drive tires are "Assymetric" the rest of their product portfolio are directional tires.

How do I determine if my tyres have been fitted properly??

re: Chevy Cruze : Tyre & wheel upgrade thread

The direction of rotation is clearly marked on the tires sidewalls, it is an arrow head kind of marking. This should be facing forward so as to turn anti clockwise when your car moves forward.

Directional tires also have the words "Inside" & "Outside" on the sidewalls. If you can read "inside" on the sidewall facing outwards, the tire is obviously incorrectly mounted.

Further if you look at the tread pattern, the direction of rotation should be along the natural flow of the pattern. Though this may not always be that clear depending on the pattern.

Please correct me if my understanding is wrong here. With unidrectional tyres one cannot switch the tyres from left to right. But one can switch from front to rear as long as they are on the same SIDE.

And the direction of rotation is marked forward for all my four tyres,i.e the right front and rear tyres will turn clockwise on forward motion and while left front and rear tyres will turn anti-clockwise on forward motion.I can see the V pattern when I view the tyre tread from front for all four tyres like how it is mentioned here http://www.ehow.com/how_5028593_unid...l-tires.html.I could not spot any "INSIDE" or "OUTSIDE" marking on any of the tyres though. Is it safe to conclude that my tyres have been properly fitted??

re: Chevy Cruze : Tyre & wheel upgrade thread

Yes, you are correct about the right side tires turning CW & those on the left turning ACW when mounted correctly.

You are also right about not being able to switch directional tires mounted on the right side to the left side and vice versa. In order to switch sides the tire would have to taken off the wheel, flipped and remounted.

As long as you have the direction marker sorted, the inside outside marker does not matter.

While this sorts out the query of tires being correctly mounted that still leaves your original problem unresolved. Any idea on the air pressure levels?

I recall reading that you are unhappy when switching lanes and also that the brakes are fading. Do you observe the waywardness only when switching lanes or when you are braking while switching lanes.

To be honest I'm not really sure, and neither is this problem consistent. On Friday morning I braked while switching lanes at a much higher speed and the car behaved like a charm. That made me conclude that it was probably psychological until the event that very evening. The rear is sometimes very nervous while braking. Now the Chennai bypass road that I mentioned is simply pathetic. There are no potholes but the road is poorly laid and the surface is bouncy. But I have done these maneuvers on stock JKs even until some 2.5 to 3k kms ago.So I should be able to replicate them in the Yokos right? And I cannot recollect this happening while not braking.I shall observe closely tomorrow though.

I had asked the guy to fill up 33psi on all four tyres while fitting the tyres last weekend. And I did observe him doing it for the rear tyres. But yesterday when I had gone to check the tyre pressure at the bunk(regular one),one of the rear ones had 17psi.Hard to say which since it is one of the new machines that fills up air in two tyres at the same time(only one meter though) and the guy was fiddling with the pressure hose. Not sure if he bungled up somewhere. The front ones had 34psi uniformly.

I'm going to observe how the car behaves closely tomorrow .It is also due for service next week. Thanks a lot for your help,I'll keep this thread updated.

NOTE:The braking response of the car has improved by leaps and bounds now.Its just that sometimes, the rear tends to slide out while braking and switching lanes.By braking I mean gradual braking to bring the speed down. For what its worth, the rear always moves to the right first!!

UPDATE: Observed closely today, the rear is nervous only while braking and switching lanes. Planning to get the car serviced on Thursday!!

UPDATE: Car is back from service. The front brake pads were totally shot!! The rear ones are good for another 5k kms. Drove the car on the bypass today. Initial impressions look good!!

re: Chevy Cruze : Tyre & wheel upgrade thread

I changed my stock tyre first time today after driving my cruze for 42000kms.
I upgraded to Yokohoma 215/60 R16(A384).
Just came back home and I drove approx 10km.
I am not very happy with the ride as of now because I guess I can feel more road then before. Even tiniest of jerk gets magnified I guess.
Will get the tyre pressure checked tomorrow...
Just wanted to check from other members if the decision of going with Yokohoma was right or wrong....

Then to 225/55 R16 Eagle NCT5, which is the next worst tyre after JK Vectra. They completely worn out after 17K Km.

Now my car is running on Goodyear Assurance for last 1000km. I bought them mainly b'cos of the low price (Rs.6800). Tread design is similar to Acelere's. There tyres are so far silent and they have decent grip in wet. I don't expect them to last very much as they are softer than Acelere's.

H is 210 kmph and V is 240 kmph. Sidewalls of Primacy LC are soft. Better avoid that expensive tyre if you are frequently traveling on bad roads.
I am not a fan of CPC2. CPC2's in my friends Laura were worn out within 11K km. Sidewalls of CPC2 and Acelere are also soft.

I still recommend you to buy the grippy Bridgestone Potenza G3 if you worry about the sidewalls and frequently travel on bad roads, else try the Yokohama DNA db ES501. I didn't buy the Potenza last time b'cose it overshoot my small budget.

I think soft sidewall results in less ride noise and Harder sidewalls results in more noise. So make your choice according to the requirements. You might need to compromise at least one of requirements.

Yokohoma Upgrade - 500kms Update

First thing I did next day was to get the tyre pressure checked. All four tyres were above 40psi. Got them set to 30psi and I was transported to another world in a jiffy.
After driving cruze for 40kms in stock tyres, yokos made me feel that I was driving a road roller earlier...
Drove to chandigarh and back and the drive got millions smiles. Biggest difference one can feel is in the steering wheel. It's such a pleasure to drive now...

Hope this experience lasts for a long time.

re: Chevy Cruze : Tyre & wheel upgrade thread

To all erudite of t-bhp I read about impressive features on: Bridgestone Turanza-TOURING GR90 and am hoping to change the stock JK Vectras to Size : 225/55R16 95V (at the crowing moment when I become proud owner of a Cruze shortly). I would really appreciate some feedback about my proposed choice for replacement. I do a LOT of highway driving with some exposure to bad roads (involuntary of course!!). I do understand that 225 might be an overkill but would it be a significant compromise of ride quality(?). Many Thanks in Advance...A

re: Chevy Cruze : Tyre & wheel upgrade thread

Why is every dealer I talk to, against me upsizing to 215/55 or 225/55. They are telling me that it'll drop the height of an already low car. While reading this chart, tells me that 225/55 will in fact increase the height slightly.

My JK Vectra's did 27k, before giving out on me. By giving out, I literally mean that one of them tore right across the center.

I was looking at the Yokohama 215/55 or 225/55, because their 205/60 are H rated and not V. I do speed once in a while.

Budget isn't an issue. I've been quoted 8000 per tyre for the MY-02.

*Everyone is recommending that I go with 205/60 Bridgestone MY-02's. How are they?

*Should I not budge and tell them to let me upgrade to 225/55? I really had my eyes on the Yokohama DB501 225/55 after looking at this thread and this chart.

*Why are there no 215/60's on the market?! Or am I missing something?
Edit: The Michelin Primacy LC seem to be the only 215/60 on the market. How are they?
