I believe a Dodge DU, 1935 (possibly a Touring Sedan) would be good for starters. I believe an "innovation" was the concealed radiator cap.

Did the DV always come with a built-in trunk ?

Possibly called the Jubilee Six on the other side of the Atlantic ?

But what does the BYE plate signify? Temporary plates of some kind?

Dear Shyam - hello after a very long time. Yes, BYE was a temporary number, called "trade plate" (red background, white number). There used to be a number BYE423/E with 25 suffixes behind it.

I distinctly remember another trade plate having the number BMN110/C, which was used to test 3 Premier Padmini cars per week, on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, from Kurla plant to Lonavla and back by one Mr. Contractor, a very genial parsi gentleman who worked in the quality control department of PAL, who used to wear a Golf cap and who used to prepare the cars on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and park them on the ramp in the service station to take the cars out for test on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays and complete his reports on the same days! Mr. Contractor was called by his pet name "Cuntu" in the service station. I had gone with him to Lonavla once. There was no issue with the car at all. This was in 1976/77. Alas, those glorious days are gone forever, "replaced by today, hahaha"! .

Best regards,

Behram Dhabhar

Re: Nostalgic automotive pictures including our family's cars

These marvellous pictures were shared by fellow forumist Mark on the pre war minor network.

He told me
Quote:
The photos were in an album among contents of a house I bought last year.
The album is titled "Life in India as a young sahib in the Twenties"
Calcutta and the Docks are mentioned. Other pictures of mounted horses and views.

here are the pictures

Two cars can be seen here

Appears to be 3 cars with the Vanguard clearly seen. One can see the bonnet logo of a Dodge, being the second car

Cheers

Re: Nostalgic automotive pictures including our family's cars

Hi KPS, the third car too looks like a 1952 Dodge or its sibling... The rear door quarter glass gives that feel.

Re: Nostalgic automotive pictures including our family's cars

Not automobile pics, however while throwing out old documents my wife came across old receipts of Vijai Deluxe scooter my father in-law purchased in 1976.

Acknowledgement letter from by father in law to Scooters India, I guess this was done to avoid any black marketing of long waitlisted two wheelers.

Price of scooter : Rs 4846

Nostalgic automotive pictures including our family's cars-img20160406wa0012.jpg

Accessories purchased for total of Rs: 5.50.
I guess the item marked as 'Red tape' is reflective sticker and 'tax holder' is the round plastic holder for displaying road tax receipt.

Nostalgic automotive pictures including our family's cars-img20160406wa0011.jpg

Vehicle insurance for Rs 120 and tax for Rs. 70. Interesting to see tax is just half of insurance, nowadays with 15 years taxation we will not be seeing the same. Also, I was of impression that road tax was for duration of 1 year, the receipt mentions it as half year.
