Re: Cartier "Travel with Style" Concourse d' Elegance 2011

I have been noticing that information about the Cartier event is quite scarce, often contradictory, as if designed make sure that there will be many surprises, and many caught off-guard. Some participants are also guilty of this. But never mind.
It seems that a total of 56 cars have been selected. There are many categories,
Classics,
Post-war classics
Roadsters. New categories are
Preservation class
Classic Cars
Jaguar Class
Rolls-Royce class.

Since info is so scarce, I googles Cartier car show 2011 and guess what:
tbhp was the first section!!
The second section was irrelevant,

The third www.dsf.my/profiles/blogs/cartier-travel-with-style has some info and pictures. Apparently there was a display of the same three cars featured in the Economic Times article posted by me earlier. And here the judges are named, but they left out the sole Indian judge or steward, Mr. Adil Darukhanawalla.

The 4th section was a site Cartier “Travel with Style” Concourse d’ Elegance 2011 , the text copy-pasted from our tbhp site (I allowed myself three smilies under special circumstances)

Coming back to the subject, I received more info and now am even more puzzled. Apparently the Jodhpur Delahaye and Rolls are going after all. The Delahaye apparently because it won last year.
If the Rolls 94RF does indeed participate, then it can give a tough fight to the Nizams Rolls for car of the show. And, the Nizams Rolls having being restored by the curator himself and sponsored by Cartier, may consider not competing. He he.

I had heard that a Triumph 1800 was participating, it is now clear that it will go in the Roadster categorie.

I hope that the earlier post by Vajra about the Morgan, which I would say only implied, not stated, that the Morgan is an entrant is a joke. Same for the Farmer's Rolls, having a made up body as a replica, and not being a Maharajas creation.

No doubt there will still be many very good cars to see, but I am wondering at the absense of any car from Dr. Vijay Mallya. I would have taken his Lanchester ex-Gondal over the Avon any day. And his Alvis would have been still far superior. So are really the finest cars showcased? I think not. People were told that transport was a cost which was taken into consideration, then how come a chop-top E-type goes from Orissa? Not all cars from afar are not deserving, but the two cars Jag and SS from Chennai are very worthy.
More later.

Cheers harit

Re: Cartier "Travel with Style" Concourse d' Elegance 2011

Can you post a full list of cars to be displayed.

So the farmers cars have no chance there huh. what abotu that lovelyBently from Tutu's garage, is it going to eb there.

In my opinion they should have had a vintage racing class too in which your Lancia and teh Fiat with Dr. VM would have been a great represtation of the Indian racing scene of the past.

What about that Holkar Bentley 3.5 that wa said to eb in Delhi, is it in the show.

Also any news on teh progress of the work on teh other 8 Litr Bently in Bombay, that would have been a good entrant as would the unrestored 6 litre Bently in the preservation class

Re: Cartier "Travel with Style" Concourse d' Elegance 2011

Yesterday a dinner was hosted at the French Embassy in Delhi for the Cartier event. By a funny co-incidence, I received a memorabilia lot in which this invitation was included, the French Prime Ministerial dinner at the Raj Bhavan in 1965.
The inner side of this folder gives the "table plan", the then Governor Dr. P.V.Cherian sitting in the center of a long table seating 76 persons, each person is named. To his right sat Madame Pompidou, opposite him sat his wife and to her right was the Prime Minister. Many French persons were there, and some Parsis like Naval Tata. Hopefully some remembered to take these souveniers last night!
And where else would I put my stamp on that invite

Bon Apetit!

Re: Cartier "Travel with Style" Concourse d' Elegance 2011

I just got back from the show too. Took over 200 pics and will post some of them.
Harit, the Morgan and the Rolls were there too.

In fact Prince Michael of Kent took the Rolls for quite a spin with 3 passengers.

Sat in the Jag convertible (new one). Urged to rev the engine to 4000 rpm, i did only to fine the car gently rocking with all the power on tap!

Wow, I would choose it over a Merc or Beemer any day.

Pics coming up soon

Pardon my ignorance, but isn't a Concours D Elegance supposed to have only perfectly restored cars? What are the Steyr and the Rolls (with scraped off paint) doing here?

Also, I'm lucky to have seen that Boat Tail Rolls Royce up close, in a private garage. Magnificent!

Those cars are part of the new Preservation class introduced this time.
The new classes intorduced this time were as follows-

NEW CLASSES

The Indian Heritage Class.
This unique class will distinguish the Cartier ‘Travel With Style’ Concours from any
other in the world. It has been created to highlight the Indian Automotive history by
exhibiting original examples of cars that were assembled in India after Independence

The Preservation Class.
A fascinating class that aims to display un-restored cars straight from the factory. This class follows strict criteria, with all the cars requiring to have their original paint and upholstery. A new international class, it will showcase cars in ‘as found’ condition,or as it is known in America – ‘barn finds’ Many of the exhibited cars will have peelingpaint, torn seats and are completely original in every respect.

The Classics/Rolls-Royce.
This new class is in effect a division from the ‘Classics’ category, as it will allow
pre-1939 Rolls-Royces to shine on their own. Arguably, one of the most popular luxury cars of its time, the Rolls-Royce out sold its contemporaries comprehensively and will highlight some quite extraordinary cars. Many are special body vehicles designed specifically for Indian Royalty.

The Jaguar Class.

Organised in association with Jaguar, this class will showcase the thoroughbred pedigree of these evocative cars and their presence in India from the company’s heydays of early sports cars to the latest luxury models.
