Mercedes recently announced the all-electric E-Class as part of its two-year product launch programme, and now the first spy shots of an early test mule have emerged.
The electric E-Class is said to be a replacement for the current EQE, which hasn’t had a great sales run. The test mule in these pictures is without camouflage and features EQE bodywork. A closer look reveals weird wheel positioning and makeshift bolt-on fender extensions. The wheel alignment of the test mule gives the impression that the new car will be shorter than the 3,120 mm wheelbase of the EQE, but longer than the 2,961 mm of the current W214 E-Class.
Mercedes recently revealed the silhouette of the electric E-Class through a teaser. The electric sedan no longer has the styling of the current EQ model but is more the traditional three-box design with a longer bonnet, upright windshield and stretched rear overhang. Mercedes said that their future EVs will look similar to their ICE cars. That said, the electric and ICE versions of the E-Class will have different underpinnings. The electric E-Class will reportedly be based on the MB.EA platform, while the ICE model could retain the existing MRA2 architecture.
Mercedes has also said that the new electric E-Class will have “benchmark interior noise comfort”. The next generation of ADAS with L2++ and L3 highway capabilities is also expected to be part of the feature list.
The all-electric E-Class is expected to debut by 2027. Apart from the E, Mercedes is also working on the electric C-Class and GLC.
