BYD evaluating three new EVs for India

BYD might bring electric SUVs like the 7-seater Tang, Seal U and Sea Lion to India.

China-based carmaker BYD recently launched its third pure-electric model, the Seal, in the Indian market. The carmaker is now evaluating three more EVs from its global range for India.

BYD is the largest electric carmaker in the world and is looking to expand its footprint in India with new models and more retail outlets. The EV maker hasn’t revealed the models that are under consideration, however, reports suggest that these might include electric SUVs like the 7-seater Tang, Seal U and Sea Lion.

Earlier this week, BYD launched the Seal electric sedan at a price of Rs 41 lakh (ex-showroom). While interacting with the media on the sidelines of the launch, G Sanjay, Senior VP of BYD India, said, “BYD, in the long term, is looking at India as the biggest market in the region; eventually, it’ll be bigger than even Japan.” He further added, “The next phase after this should be local assembly. While this isn’t imminent, we have to look at what is the right time for assembly.”

BYD India currently has the E6 MPV, Atto 3 electric SUV and the newly introduced Seal on sale. The company has also filed a trademark application for the Dolphin in India. It’s a 4-door electric hatchback that comes with a 60.4 kWh battery pack offering a maximum range of 427 km. It powers an electric motor that produces 201 BHP and 290 Nm.
