Delhi government announces subsidies on electric vehicles

The Delhi government is making the purchase of electric vehicles attractive for customers by announcing subsidies on them.  The Society of Manufacturers of Electric Vehicles believes that this step taken by the government will boost the demand and create the right atmosphere for greater adoption of electric vehicles.

Under the scheme, a subsidy of 15% on the MRP of the vehicle is directly transferred to the customer’s bank account within two months from the date of purchase. Apart from this, there is zero VAT charged and the road tax on electric vehicles has been slashed by 50%. The government claims that this move will benefit the end consumer since it is speedy and transparent. More than 45,000 customers who purchased electric scooters are believed to have benefited from the subsidies so far.

Electric scooters are said to be 60% cheaper to run, 70% easier to maintain and 90% less polluting compared to petrol scooters.
