First 'Make in India' Volvo XC90 rolls off production line

The first made-in-India Volvo has rolled off the company's new production line. Volvo has started local assembly of the Volvo XC90 SUV, which is being built at Volvo Group India's existing facility near Bangalore.

The XC90 is based on Volvo's SPA (Scalable Product Architecture) modular platform. The car maker has plans to build more SPA-based models in India. These include the S90 sedan and the XC90 Cross Country estate that are currently sold in India.

Volvo had earlier announced that it would start assembly operations in India in 2017. Locally built cars would allow the company to offer its products at competitive prices and it hopes to achieve a 10% segment share by the end of 2020. Remaining models will continue to be imported as CBUs (Completely Built Units).
