High security number plates mandatory from January 1, 2019

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has announced that high security registration plates (HSRP) will be mandatory for vehicles manufactured on or after January 1, 2019. The ministry has also issued new draft rules that make it mandatory for car manufacturers to provide HSRPs, while dealerships will be responsible for affixing them.

Until now, HSRPs were compulsory in 13 states. The plates have in-built security features like a chromium-based hologram and a 10 digit permanent identification number. A chromium-based, self-destructive hologram sticker is affixed to vehicles fitted with HSRPs. The sticker has details like the engine and chassis number, registration number and registering authority.

Earlier this month, Union Minster Mr. Nitin Gadkari had announced that vehicles will come fitted with number plates from the factory. In other words, vehicle manufacturers will now have to either produce or source HSRPs from certified vendors. These plates will come with a 15-year guarantee.
